Stable isotope ratios data of NEREA Augmented Observatory
<p>Samples were collected at 1m depth or along the whole water column using Niskin bottles and plankton nets, transferred into bins or jars and transported to the laboratory, where the individual size fractions were isolated. For each size fraction, samples were frozen and freeze-dried individually. Carbon and nitrogen stable isotope values (‰) were determined at the Stable Isotope Facility at the University of california in Davis (USA).</p>

<p>This dataset includes visible-light and thermal imaging video of tap water ice being cut with millisecond-range pulses of 1070 nm laser light, as well as stable isotope and chemical (commonly-used ion species) composition data of ice samples frozen from Fiji bottled water and South Pole 1980 meltwater.</p> <p>This is a copy of the dataset published to USAP-DC, which requires that visitors arrange a download by email. <p><span>We carry out our work on a total of 202 sediment samples spanning the past ~400 kyr from IODP Core 363-U1483 (13.09°S, 121.80°E; water depth: 1733 m), which was recovered at the Timor Sea in the outflow area of the Indonesian Throughflow. In this study, we present Mg/Ca ratios and stable oxygen isotope from tests of planktonic foraminiferal Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, respectively.</span></p>

Data from: Stable isotope signatures of underground seedlings reveal the organic matter gained by adult orchids from mycorrhizal fungi
1.Orchids produce dust seeds dependent on the provision of organic carbon by mycorrhizal fungi for their early development stages. Hence, all chlorophyllous orchids experience a dramatic switch in trophic strategies from initial mycoheterotrophy to either autotrophy or partial mycoheterotrophy during ontogeny. Yet, the degree to which partially mycoheterotrophic orchids gain carbon from their mycorrhizal fungi is unclear based on existing approaches. 2.Here, we propose a novel approach to quantify the fungal-derived organic matter gain of chlorophyllous mature orchids mycorrhizal with rhizoctonia fungi using the stable isotope signatures of their fully mycoheterotrophic (FMH) seedlings in a linear two-source mixing model. 3.We conducted a field germination experiment with seven orchid species and measured carbon, nitrogen and hydrogen stable isotope natural abundances and nitrogen concentrations of mature orchids, underground seedlings and autotrophic references. 4.After in situ burial for 19 – 30 months, germination rates varied considerably among five orchid species and failed for two. On average, underground seedlings were enriched in 13C and 15N relative to mature orchids and had higher nitrogen concentrations. Using the mean enrichment factors ε13C and ε2H of seedlings as FMH endpoint, the organic matter gain derived by mature orchids from mycorrhizas was ca. 20%. 5.Chlorophyllous orchids mycorrhizal with rhizoctonias are predisposed to partially mycoheterotrophic nutrition due to their initially mycoheterotrophic seedling stage. We show that the carbon and hydrogen isotope abundances of underground seedlings can be used in an improved mixing-model to identify a significant proportion of fungal-derived organic matter in mature orchids.

Nickel and chromium stable isotopic composition of ureilites: implications for the Earth's core formation and differentiation of the ureilite parent body
<p>We report the first Ni and Cr stable isotope data for ureilite meteorites that are the mantle residue of a carbon-rich differentiated planet. Ureilites have similar Ni stable isotope compositions as chondrites, suggesting the core-mantle differentiation of ureilite parent body did not fractionate Ni isotopes. Since the size of Earth is potentially larger than that of ureilite parent body (UPB; with diameter > 690 km), resulting in higher temperatures at the core-mantle boundary of Earth, it can be predicted that the terrestrial core formation may not directly cause Ni stable isotope fractionation. On the other hand, we also report high-precision Cr stable isotope composition of ureilites, including one ureilitic trachyandesite (ALM-A) that is enriched in lighter Cr stable isotopes relative to the main-group ureilites, which suggests the partial melting occurred on UPB. The globally heavy Cr in the UPB compared to chondrites can be caused by sulfur-rich core formation processes.</p>
We are what we eat, plus some per mill: Using stable isotopes to estimate diet composition in Gyps vultures over space and time
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>1. Dietary studies in birds of prey involve direct observation and examination of food remains at resting and nesting sites. Although these methods accurately identify diet in raptors, they are time consuming, resource intensive and associated with biases that stem from the feeding ecology of raptors like <i>Gyps </i>vultures (<i>Gyps africanus</i> and <i>Gyps rueppelli</i>). Our study set out to estimate diet composition in <i>Gyps </i>vultures informed by stable isotopes that provide a good representation of assimilated diet from carrion resources in local systems. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p>2. We hypothesized that differences in <i>Gyps </i>vulture diet composition is a function of sampling location, and that these vultures move between Serengeti National Park and Selous Game Reserve to forage. We also, theorized that grazing ungulates are the principal items in <i>Gyps</i> vulture diet. </p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>3. Through a combination of linear and Bayesian models, diet derived from d<sup>13</sup>C in <i>Gyps</i> vultures consisted of grazing herbivores across study areas, with those in Serengeti National Park consuming higher proportions of grazing herbivores (> 87%). d<sup>13</sup>C differences in vulture feather subsets per site did not indicate vulture diet change, and in combination with blood d<sup>13</sup>C, vultures fed largely on grazers for ~159 days before they were sampled in both sites. Similarly, d<sup>15</sup>N values implied that <i>Gyps </i>vultures fed largely on herbivores across space and time. d<sup>34</sup>S ratios separated prey source for vultures between the two sites. d<sup>34</sup>S variation in vultures across sites resulted from differences in baseline (plant) d<sup>34</sup>S values, though it is not possible to match d<sup>34</sup>S to specific locations. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>4. Our findings highlight the relevance of repeated sampling that considers tissues with varying isotopic turnover and emerging Bayesian techniques for dietary studies using stable isotopes. Findings also suggested limited vulture movement between the two local systems. However, more sampling coupled with telemetry is required to fully comprehend this observation and its implications to <i>Gyps</i> vulture ecology and conservation.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Data for: Combining stable isotopes, trace elements, and distribution models to assess the geographic origins of migratory bats
<p>The expansion of industrial-scale wind-energy facilities has increased the production of low-carbon emission energy but has also resulted in mortality of wildlife, including migratory bats. Management decisions can be limited by a lack of understanding of the geographic impact of bats killed at wind-energy facilities. Several studies have leveraged stable hydrogen isotope ratios (δ<sup>2</sup>H) of bat fur to illuminate this issue but are limited in the precision of conclusion because δ<sup>2</sup>H values vary primarily across latitudinal and elevational bands. One approach to increase the precision of geographic assignment is to combine independent inferences about spatial location from additional biomarkers and other related information. To test this possibility, we assigned known-origin individuals of three bat species commonly killed at on-shore wind-energy facilities in North America (<em>Lasiurus</em> <em>borealis</em>, <em>L</em>. <em>cinereus</em>, and <em>Lasionycteris</em> <em>noctivagans</em>) to probable origin using δ<sup>2</sup>H values, trace element concentrations, and species distribution models. We used cross-validation calibrated combined model tuning to determine the degree to which assignment probabilities improved when combining datasets. We found that combining markers typically performed better than single approaches. For <em>L. borealis</em> and <em>L. cinereus</em>, combining all three data sources outperformed any single or other combined approach. With an accuracy set at 80%, an average of 39.7% and 36.0% of each species' total geographic range was considered a potential origin, respectively; stable hydrogen alone included 51.8% and 50.6% of the total geographic area. In contrast, for <em>L. noctivagans</em>, including trace elements did not increase precision, and adding distribution data to δ<sup>2</sup>H values only improved precision by 0.6%. Thus, we found that a combination of multiple biomarkers typically, but not always, outperforms single marker approaches, and optimized combinations of different markers outperform equal weighting of each marker. From a practical perspective, δ<sup>2</sup>H values performed better than trace elements alone; in cases where cost is a limiting factor, the stable hydrogen should be the single biomarker used in conjunction with species distribution models. Overall, these results highlight the importance of validating methods for each species they are applied to and show that combining information from intrinsic biomarker approaches is a useful tool to document bat movements.</p>
