Joined up thinking: linking and sharing Science Museum collections and content

<p>The Science Museum has much content online featuring its collections, objects&nbsp; and contextual stories, but this is fragmented across many websites and fails to add up to a credible and coherent online destination. It is known from our analytics that rich engagement with our online content takes place across the internet; on blogs, on twitter etc, but this engagement isn't reflected on our own web presence.</p><p>Our user-centred design process told us that users had relatively little interest in the data itself - their goal was content - but that the richness of the linkages our data could drive greatly increased the content's value. We set up a project to create aggregated content on our core website, interlinking it from various domains - archives and images, collections catalogues and content management systems - through its key ideas; allowing it to form a nexus for the wider conversations taking place around it.</p><p>As a result we have built a new infrastructure with linked open data at its heart. We have adopted a pragmatic ontological approach to maintain the integrity of our data sources, while leaving open the possibility of translating this for a greater variety of ontologies in the future. The result is an online product with an underlying data structure that combines two networks of linkages: a data-driven, structured, ontological one; and an organic one driven by user behaviour, creating a flexible platform with long term value - the simplest possible solution to a complex problem.</p>

Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?

<p><strong>Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?</strong></p><p>Several scholars in Knowledge Organization (KO) and in Library and Information Science (LIS) have expressed concern that the field seems driven primarily by practical applications and professional practices. Others have stressed the need for research in the field to be more theoretically motivated, lest it continue to be perceived not as a scientific field but simply as a set of techniques used to solve problems. Hence, there have been calls for scholars and practitioners to make explicit the epistemological assumptions underlying methods used to design information services and tools for their users as this can help identify inherent biases.&nbsp;</p><p>In answer to these calls, we examined the epistemological assumptions underlying methods deployed in some fields of KO and LIS – namely information retrieval and topic mapping. A careful examination of the underlying assumptions to these methods showed that they exhibited epistemological hybridity, in this case, a combination of empiricism and positivism with a dash of pragmatism and hermeneutics at the end.&nbsp;</p><p>We therefore hypothesize that it may not be a straightforward task for a researcher or an information professional to claim that a method borrows solely from positivism, rationalism, empiricism or social-constructivism or historicism or hermeneutics, simply because there is a gap between epistemological theories and methods linked to them. Also, a given piece of work may deploy methods linked to different epistemological theories.</p><p>Although our examples are taken from LIS and KO fields, we suspect that our observations may be generalized to other scientific disciplines and fields of inquiry.</p>

Model data for "The GERB Obs4MIPs Radiative Flux Dataset: A new tool for climate model evaluation", submitted to Earth System Science Data

<p>© Crown Copyright, Met Office</p><p>The E1hrClimMon files contain the monthly mean diurnal cycles of TOA radiative fluxes (all-sky and clear-sky) for amip experiment of two configurations of HadGEM3: GC3.1 and GC5.0. The monthly mean diurnal cycle is constructed by averaging each UTC hourly mean over the entire month. The HadGEM3 OLR diagnostics used in this study differ from those submitted to CFMIP3. The OLR diagnostics submitted to CFMIP3 contain a correction that accounts for the surface temperature adjustment by the boundary layer scheme in model time steps between radiation time steps. This OLR diagnostic adjustment is introduced to conserve energy, but it significantly distorts the diurnal cycle of OLR. For comparison with the GERB obs4MIPs products, the OLR without this correction is recommended.</p><p>The COSP file contains the average monthly climatologies for the variables cfadLidarsr532 and clisccp for the amip simulations of GC3.1 and GC5.0.</p>

Data from: Mapping wing morphs of Tetrix subulata using citizen science data: flightless groundhoppers are more prevalent in grasslands near water

<p>To analyse the correlation between groundhopper wing morph and landscape characteristics, we collected the following data. GBIF observations of <em>Tetrix subulata</em> (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Netherlands were annotated with wing morph and sex (based on the images), and weather and landscape information (based on the location). The weather information is based on an interpolation of data from the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI). Landscape and habitat information was characterised by determining the area of different area types, from the Basisregistratie Topografie (BRT) TOP10NL dataset, in a radius around the observation. The landscape information also includes Dutch physical-geographical regions. To check for possible effects of seasonality, the event date of the observation is included. To check for the effect of the landscape radius on the analysis, those analyses were repeated for different radiuses. Depending on the precision of the coordinate location, some radiuses could not be tested for some observations.&nbsp;</p> <p>The file "data.csv" contains one row per observation-radius combination, with the following columns (* repeated for each radius):</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td><strong>Columns</strong></td> <td><strong>Description</strong></td> </tr> <tr> <td>gbifID*</td> <td>ID of the observation on GBIF</td> </tr> <tr> <td>eventDate*</td> <td>Date of observation (YYYY-MM-DD)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>wing_morph*</td> <td>Wing morph annotation (long; short)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>sex*</td> <td>Sex annotation (female; male; obscured; multiple; reevaluate i.e. unknown)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>region*</td> <td>Physical-geographical region in which the observation was made</td> </tr> <tr> <td>temperature*</td> <td>Predicted temperature (average over 1991-2020; degrees Celsius)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>windspeed*</td> <td>Predicted windspeed (average over 1991-2020; meters per second)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>precipitation*</td> <td>Predicted precipitation (average over 1991-2020; millimeters)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>landscape_radius</td> <td>Landscape radius&nbsp;(50, 100, 200, 500, or 1000 meters)</td> </tr> <tr> <td>deciduous forest, grass, mixed forest, ...</td> <td>Total surface area of given area type in given radius around observation (square meters)</td> </tr> </tbody> </table>
