Mediterranean underwater fish visual census surveys data
<p><span>The positive effect of fully protected Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) on marine biodiversity, specifically on fishes, has been widely documented. In contrast, the potential of MPAs to mitigate the impact of adverse climatic conditions has seldom been investigated. </span><span>Here, we assessed the effectiveness of MPAs, quantified as increasing fish biomass, across wide geographic and environmental gradients across the Mediterranean Sea. We performed underwater visual surveys within and outside MPAs to characterize fish assemblages in 52 rocky reef sites across an extent of over 3,300 km. We used the steep spatial temperature gradient across the Mediterranean as a 'space-for-time' substitution to infer climate-driven temporal changes. </span><span>We found that</span><span>, as expected,</span><span> Mediterranean MPAs increased fish biomass. At the same time, higher seawater temperatures are associated with decreased fish biomass, changes in species composition, and shifts towards more thermophilic species. Importantly, we found that the rate of decrease in fish biomass with temperature was similar between protected and fished sites. </span>Taken together, these results suggest that the capacity of MPAs to harbor higher fish biomass, compared to surrounding areas, is maintained across a broad temperature range. At the same time, MPAs will not be able to offset larger-scale biotic alterations associated with climate change. <span>Policy implications: Our results suggest that sustained warming will likely reduce fish biomass in the Mediterranean Sea and shift community structure, requiring more conservative targets for fishery regulations. At the same time, protection from fishing will remain an important management tool even with future high-water temperatures, and MPAs are expected to continue to provide local-scale benefits to conservation and fisheries. </span></p>
Data from: Visual attention and perception of road safety advertisements with different level of explicitness in Peruvian millennials and centennials
<p>In the face of the massiveness of content, social advertisements must explore the potential of other dimensions to improve their designs. This paper examines the effect of different levels of graphic explicitness on the attention and perception of road safety ads. An eye-tracking experiment was conducted to assess the visual attention of 60 young millennials and centennials on three ads with images of different levels of explicitness. Participants were agrouped into two groups where they watched two road safety ads with negative valence, but with different levels of explicitness in the second ad seen. For the image and text of each ad, metrics of number of fixations, time to first fixation and total fixation time spent were compared. A survey provided qualitative information about the perception and effectiveness of the ads. Significant effects were found when using negative emotional appeals through explicitness to enhance visual attention and audience perception. But, although the image has prominence, textual design should not be neglected to focus the emotional appeal of the ad.</p>

Data for: Ongoing and visually evoked activity in the zebrafish optic tectum and adjacent brain structures
<p>The ongoing activity of neuronal populations represents an internal brain state that influences how sensory information is processed to control behaviour. Conversely, external sensory inputs perturb network dynamics, resulting in lasting effects that persist beyond the duration of the stimulus. However, the relationship between these dynamics and circuit architecture and their impact on sensory processing, cognition and behaviour are poorly understood. By combining cellular-resolution calcium imaging with mechanistic network modelling, we aimed to infer the spatial and temporal network interactions in the zebrafish optic tectum that shape its ongoing activity and state-dependent responses to visual input. We showed that a simple recurrent network architecture, wherein tectal dynamics are dominated by fast, short range, excitation countered by long-lasting, activity-dependent suppression, was sufficient to explain multiple facets of population activity including intermittent bursting, trial-to-trial sensory response variability and spatially-selective response adaptation. Moreover, these dynamics also predicted behavioural trends such as selective habituation of visually evoked prey-catching responses. Overall, we demonstrate that a mechanistic circuit model, built upon a uniform recurrent connectivity motif, can estimate the incidental state of a dynamic neural network and account for experience-dependent effects on sensory encoding and visually guided behaviour.</p>

"The main message is that sustainability would help" – Reflections on takeaway messages of climate change data visualizations.
<p>As part of a larger project investigating expert opinions on public climate change communication and the role of data visualizations1, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 17 experts in the fields of climate change, science communication, or data visualization. We also interviewed six members of the general public with no professional background in either of these areas, who we refer to as lay participants. In the following, lay participants are identified as L-1 to L-6 and expert participants as E-1 to E-17.</p> <p>We used two example visualizations from online news sources (if preferred, translated to German) as a discussion basis and asked participants about the main takeaway message the visualization author wanted to convey. Example visualization 1 was also shown to 17 experts, resulting in a total of 23 formulated takeaway messages. Example visualization 2 was shown to all six lay participants and to seven experts, resulting in a total of 13 messages. For both example visualizations and an overall count of 36 formulated takeaway messages for thematic analysis, we have observed variations in the included contents and the length/abstraction of messages, as well as in the sensemaking process itself among the two participant groups, but also between lay and expert participants. This document provides an overview of those 36 takeaway messages formulated by the study participants.</p>

Raw data of visual search parameters of individuals with normal trichromacy and colour vision deficiency
<p><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>: Colour-related search tasks are common in many professional fields. The study investigated whether increasing chromatic saturation can enhance the visual performance of individuals with colour vision deficiency (CVD) in colour-related search tasks.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>: 10 normal trichromats (5M, 5F; Mean (SD) age: 23.1 (3.3) years) and 15 individuals with CVD [8 deutans and 7 protans identified by HRR plates] (14M, 1F; aged 28.6 (8.7) years) participated in this study. Four naturalistic sceneries of everyday tasks/ birds, animals, and flowers of 15 different colour combinations (1 pair of colours in each combination. e.g., 'brown/black' or 'red/green') were presented in 'low' saturation, 'original' (unaltered images) and 'high' saturation condition using the Psychopy program on a colour-calibrated monitor. On each trial, the subject was asked to identify a specific-coloured target. </span></p> <p><span><strong>Results</strong>: </span><span>Overall, the visual search performance index (expressed as product of accuracy and a reciprocal of reaction time (%correct*s<sup>-1</sup>) of the normal trichromats [Mean (SD):77.76% correct*s<sup>-1</sup> (16.32)] was significantly higher than CVD [45.71 % correct*s<sup>-1</sup> (18.95)] in the "original" test images (p = 0.001), but in individuals with CVD, there was no significant difference between 'original' [45.71 % correct*s<sup>-1</sup> (18.95)] and 'high' saturation condition ([47.43 % correct*s<sup>-1</sup> (20.07)]; p > 0.05). However, colour-wise, increased saturation showed improvements (≥ 10 %) in protans mainly for 'red' combinations with other colours such as white (i.e., 'red/white'), purple, orange, grey, green, brown, and black.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion</span></strong><span>:</span><span> The study suggests that increasing the saturation of certain colour combinations can potentially aid in the visual search performance of individuals with CVD. This knowledge will help in better counselling and management of the patients.</span></p>
