Medieval graffiti from Calatrava la Vieja, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Islamic almohad period (1195-1212 CE). They were discovered in 1984, during the ecavation works carried out under the direction of the architect Miguel Fisac. They are located in the western wall of the alcázar, and were made with a sharp object in the south face of the southern tower.They represent six and eight-pointed stars and names of people written in arabic. The date is also unknown, but it is generally accepted as a medieval cross slab. Irish monks lived on the island between the sixth and 10th century producing purple dye. It probably reads VIR / QONFAL FILIVS / VENNORCIT in a mixture of Roman capitals and 'book-hand' used in 6th century manuscripts. It is a personal memorial stone for Qonfal - possibly a memorial from his wife. Vennorcit is his father. Qonfal may mean "Lordly-Hound, Great Wolf" and Vennorcit, "Fair Slayer".
