Disentangling fragmentation effects on herbivory in understory plants of longleaf pine savanna

Habitat fragmentation affects species and their interactions through intertwined mechanisms that include changes to fragment area, shape, connectivity and distance to edge. Disentangling these pathways is a fundamental challenge of landscape ecology and will help identify ecological processes important for management of rare species or restoration of fragmented habitats. In a landscape experiment that manipulated connectivity, fragment shape, and distance to edge while holding fragment area constant, we examined how fragmentation impacts herbivory and growth of nine plant species in longleaf pine savanna. Probability of herbivory in open habitat was strongly dependent on proximity to forest edge for every species, increasing with distance to edge in six species (primarily grasses and annual forbs) and decreasing in three species (perennial forbs and a shrub). In the two species of perennial forbs, these edge effects were dependent on fragment shape; herbivory strongly decreased with distance to edge in fragments of two shapes, but not in a third shape. For most species, however, probability of herbivory was unrelated to connectivity or fragment shape. Growth was generally determined more strongly by leaf herbivory than by distance to edge, fragment shape, or connectivity. Taken together, these results demonstrate consistently strong edge effects on herbivory, one of the most important biotic factors determining plant growth and demography. Our results contrast with the generally inconsistent results of observational studies, likely because our experimental approach enabled us to tease apart landscape processes that are typically confounded.

Can dispersal mode predict corridor effects on plant parasites?

Habitat corridors, a common management strategy for increasing connectivity in fragmented landscapes, have experimentally validated positive influences on species movement and diversity. However, long-standing concerns that corridors could negatively impact native species by spreading antagonists, such as disease, remain largely untested. Using a large-scale, replicated experiment, we evaluated whether corridors increase the incidence of plant parasites. We found that corridor impacts varied with parasite dispersal mode. Connectivity provided by corridors increased incidence of biotically dispersed parasites (galls on Solidago odora) but not of abiotically dispersed parasites (foliar fungi on S. odora and three Lespedeza spp.). Both biotically and abiotically dispersed parasites responded to edge effects, but the direction of responses varied across species. Although our results require additional tests for generality to other species and landscapes, they suggest that, when establishing conservation corridors, managers should focus on mitigating two potential negative effects: the indirect effects of narrow corridors in creating edges and direct effects of corridors in enhancing connectivity of biotically dispersed parasites.

Evolutionary history of grazing and resources determine herbivore exclusion effects on plant diversity

Ecological models predict that the effects of mammalian herbivore exclusion on plant diversity depend on resource availability and plant exposure to ungulate grazing over evolutionary time. Using an experiment replicated in 57 grasslands on six continents, with contrasting evolutionary history of grazing, we tested how resources (mean annual precipitation and soil nutrients) determine herbivore exclusion effects on plant diversity, richness, and evenness. Here we show that at sites with a long history of ungulate grazing, herbivore exclusion reduced plant diversity by reducing both richness and evenness, and the responses of richness and diversity to herbivore exclusion decreased with mean annual precipitation. At short with a short history of grazing, the effects of herbivore exclusion were not related to precipitation but differed for native and exotic plant richness. Thus, plant species’ evolutionary history of grazing continues to shape the response of the world’s grasslands to changing mammalian herbivory.

Native Bee and Nectar-Producing Plant Community Data from Iowa and Missouri (2017-2018)

The majority of tallgrass prairie in the American Midwest has been lost, largely due to extensive conversion to agriculture, with negative impacts on prairie-dependent taxa. Pastureland managed with both periodic fire and grazing (“pyric herbivory”) to mirror historic disturbance shows promise as a tool to restore grassland species’ diversity. The benefits of pyric herbivory management to the abundance and diversity of grassland insect pollinators has been demonstrated at "site" level but finer spatial scale benefits remain unclear. These data focus on native bee communities and nectar-producing flower abundance within sites either managed with graze and burn (same fire schedule as burn only but with cattle grazing) or patch-burn graze (grazing by cattle with a burn on one third of the site every year). The graze and burn sites were further managed against an invasive grass (tall fescue; Schedonorus arundinaceus) where one third of the site was left as a control, two thirds were sprayed with the herbicide glyphosate in 2014 and one of those two thirds was also seeded with native prairie plants the following spring. Native bees and flowers were sampled from May to August 2017 and 2018 on six sites in southern Iowa (Ringgold Co.) and norther Missouri (Harrison Co.).

Global dataset of plant diversity and the spatial variability of grassland biomass from NutNet

While there is strong evidence of diversity effects on temporal variability of productivity, whether this mechanism extends to variability across space remains elusive. Here, we present data from Nutrien Network (www.nutnet.org) that were used to determine the relationship between diferent scales of plant diversity and spatial variability of productivity in 83 grasslands worldwide, and to quantify the effect of experimentally increased spatial heterogeneity in environmental conditions on this relationship. There are two data sets, one for the pre-treatment (observational_data.csv) data, and other for the experimentally increased heterogeneity (increased heterogeneity.csv). In these data sets, study sites contained at least three replicates that originated from blocks each composed of ten 5 m × 5 m plots. In addition, pre-treatment data has a subset of sites in where soil conditions where measured (observational_data_soil.csv) and a version in which data for each site are sumarized and site-level climatic variables obtained from WorldClim (www.worldclim.org) are added. Data package for NutNet project: Compositional variation in grassland plant communities (60 sites, 2007-2020)

Data associated with a manuscript examining compositional variation in grassland plant communities around the globe. We used a globally distributed experiment to examine variation in species composition within 60 grasslands on 6 continents. Each site had an identical experimental and sampling design: 24 plots x 4 years. We expressed compositional variation within each site—not across sites—using abundance- and incidence-based metrics of the magnitude of dissimilarity (Bray-Curtis and Sorensen, respectively), abundance- and incidence-based measures of the relative importance of replacement (balanced variation and species turnover, respectively), and species richness at two scales (per plot-year (alpha) and per site (gamma)). We assessed species composition separately for each site and then compared patterns among sites, asking: (1) How does small-scale compositional variation differ among grasslands?; (2) Can compositional variation within a site be predicted by its biotic and abiotic context?; and (3) Does a combination of metrics enhance our understanding of the ecological processes at individual sites? This data package includes the site-specific values of each metric and the explanatory variables used to predict differences in compositional variation among sites. Scripts to conduct analyses and create figures and tables are also provided.

Data from Globally Consistent Drivers of Plant Microbiome Diversity Across Hosts and Continents

We experimentally manipulated two potential mediators of plant microbiome diversity (soil nutrient supply and herbivore density) at 23 grassland sites spanning global-scale gradients in soil nutrients, climate, and plant biomass. This work used sites that are part of the Nutrient Network Experiment (NutNet; www.nutnet.org), a globally replicated experiment manipulating elemental nutrient supplies and herbivore density in grasslands worldwide. Using amplicon sequencing, we measured relative abundances of fungal (ITS1) and prokaryotic (16S) diversity in the leaves of the most widespread grass at each of 23 grassland sites (focal hosts included 18 grass species from 15 genera).
