Spatial analysis of the potential impact of contaminated areas on wells and aquifers in the Upper Tietê Basin, São Paulo, Brazil
<p><span>Upper Tietê stands out as the basin with the highest concentration of contaminated areas in São Paulo, Brazil, thereby exerting a pronounced impact on the quality of groundwater and directly affecting the resident population. Recognizing the importance of developing indicators for effective aquifer management, this study proposed to identify and assess the degree of risk, vulnerability, and contamination of aquifers and wells in the Upper Tietê Basin. Were applied the Aquifer Vulnerability Index method to evaluate the aquifer vulnerability in the region; the delimitation of safety perimeters and identification of wells at risk; and the integrated risk index, unifying information on social and aquifer vulnerabilities, hazards and exposure. The results reveal that the aquifers have a high vulnerability, mainly due to the thickness of their unsaturated layer. Furthermore, there were 7,958 wells at risk around the basin (77.15%), and the most vulnerable municipalities are on the outskirts of the basin. This study provides important insights, mainly due to the holistic approach, serving as a basis for identifying the regions with the highest risks, which can be prevented and mitigated with appropriate actions.</span></p>
Video supplement: A three-dimensional palaeo-reconstruction of the groundwater salinity distribution in the Nile Delta Aquifer

The filenames indicate simulation code, for explanation see accompanying paper, submitted to HESS.</p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>The Nile Delta is an important agricultural area with a fast-growing population. Though traditionally irrigated with surface water, the delta increasingly relies on groundwater. However, saline groundwater extends far land inward, rendering groundwater close to the coastal zone useless for consumption or agriculture. To aid groundwater management decisions, hydrogeologists reconstructed this saline and brackish groundwater zone using variable-density groundwater models with very large dispersivities. However, this approach cannot explain the observed freshening of this zone as observed by hydrogeochemists, who hypothesize that the coastal saline zone is the effect of the Holocene transgression. Here, we investigated physical plausibility of this hypothesis by conducting a palaeo-reconstruction of groundwater salinity for the last 32 ka with a complex 3D variable-density groundwater flow model, using state-of-the-art model code that allows for parallel computation. Several scenarios with different lithologies and hypersaline groundwater provenances were simulated, of which five were selected that showed the best match with the observations. Amongst these selections, total fresh water volumes varied strongly, ranging from 1526 to 2659 km3, mainly due to uncertainties in the lithology offshore and at larger depths. This range is smaller (1511-1989 km3) when we consider the volumes of onshore fresh groundwater within 300 m depth. Regardless of the variance, in all cases the total volume of hypersaline groundwater exceeded that of sea water. We also show that during the last 32 ka, the total fresh groundwater volumes significantly declined, with a factor ranging from 1.9 to 5.4, due to the rising sea-level. Compared to a steady-state solution with present-day boundary conditions, the palaeo-reconstruction improved our validation for the saline zone (5 g/L – 35 g/L TDS). Also, under highly permeable conditions the marine transgression simulated with the palaeo-reconstruction led to a steeper fresh-salt interface compared to its steady-state equivalent, while low permeable clay layers allowed for the preservation of volumes of fresh groundwater. This shows that long-term transient simulations are needed when estimating present-day fresh-salt groundwater distribution in large deltas. The insights of this study are also applicable to other major deltaic areas, given the wide-range of lithological model scenarios used in this study and since many deltas also experienced a Holocene marine transgression.</p>
Efficiency and heat transport processes of low-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage systems: new insights from global sensitivity analyses - Supporting Dataset
<p>This dataset contains the files used to substantiate the outcomes of the publication <em>"Efficiency and heat transport processes of low-temperature aquifer thermal energy storage systems: new insights from global sensitivity analyses"</em>. </p> <p>It includes the output of 250 random model realizations of an aquifer thermal energy storage system in a thick productive aquifer (Case 1). Model for Calibrating a Model to Thirty Years of Data to Capture the Accumulation of Chloride from Winter Deicers in a Shallow Aquifer
<p>We created a ten layer model to simulate the flow and transport of chloride in Will County’s shallow aquifer with Groundwater Vistas software. This model is transient with yearly stress periods starting in 1950 and ending in 2020.</p> <p>The groundwater flow model was developed using the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) finite difference code MODFLOW-NWT (McDonald and Harbaugh 1988; Niswonger et al., 2011) within the graphical user interface Groundwater Vistas 7.24 (Rumbaugh and Rumbaugh, 2020). Two new phreatic snails (Mollusca: Caenogastropoda: Cochliopidae) from the Edwards and Edwards-Trinity aquifers, Texas
<p>The Edwards and Edwards-Trinity Aquifers of Texas have diverse stygofauna, including fifteen species of snails found in phreatic and hyporheic habitats. These species have the hallmarks of adaptation to subterranean environments including extremely small body size and the loss of pigmentation and eyes. Here we use an integrative taxonomic approach, using shell, radula, and anatomical features as well as mitochondrial and nuclear DNA data, to circumscribe a new genus and two new cavesnail species from Central Texas. <em>Vitropyrgus</em> <em>lillianae</em> gen. et sp. nov. is described from Comal Springs (Comal County) and Fessenden Springs (Kerr County) and distinguished by a glassy, highly sculptured shell and distinctively simple, unornamented penial morphology. We also describe<em> Phreatodrobia bulla </em>sp. nov. from Hidden Springs (Bell County), and several other springs in Bell & Williamson Counties, Texas. This species has a smooth, unsculptured teleoconch, a reflected and flared lip, and deeply concave operculum. </p>

(2003) as well as the IP and HT inversion results with three different spacings (0.25 m, 0.5 m, 1 m) and two additional IP calibration approaches (factor and exponential calibration). All results are given as 2D cross-sections with the corresponding K-information.</p>

Each seismogram contains 909 channels and 7000 samples for each trace, with a sampling frequency 1 kHz. Estimation of average diffuse aquifer recharge using time series modeling of groundwater heads
<p>This map contains the data used in the study 'Estimation of average diffuse aquifer recharge using time series modeling of groundwater heads'. In this study a new method is presented to estimate average diffuse aquifer recharge of water table aquifers in temperate climates using time series analysis of water table level fluctuations. Recharge is estimated from time series models fitted to observed heads under the additional constraint that the seasonal harmonic of the observed head is reproduced as the sum of the transformed seasonal harmonics present in precipitation, evaporation, and pumping. The method is applied to measured heads obtained from piezometers situated on and around the ice-pushed sand ridge of Salland in the Netherlands.
