Model data for: Drawdown of atmospheric pCO2 via dynamic particle export stoichiometry in the ocean twilight zone
<p>Understanding the global carbon cycle is key to understanding the climate system. One of the large unknowns is the processes happening in the twilight zone of the ocean. Here, we focus on how elemental stoichiometry of particulate organic matter in the twilight zone affects the strength of the biological pump and atmospheric CO2. We show through modeling that atmospheric CO2 is very sensitive to the change in C:P ratio in the twilight zone. Numerous model studies study the link between the carbon cycle and flexible elemental stoichiometry of organic matter in the surface ocean. However, our model study is unique. It investigates the effects of stoichiometric changes both at the surface and in the subsurface ocean that also involve stoichiometric interaction between phytoplankton and zooplankton.<br> <br> We use a 3D numerical model to illustrate how C:P variability in the twilight zone can significantly modulate the strength of carbon sequestration and atmospheric CO2. We used the biogeochemical model MOPS (Kriest and Oschlies, Geosci. Model Dev., 8, 2929–2957, 2015) coupled to ECCO Transport Matrices.</p> <p>This repository contains model input and output files for each sensitivity run outlined in the paper. The run ID corresponds to different sensitivity run. See README for more details. </p>

CESM coupled simulation dataset with new (Mod_cp) and original (F09) dynamical coupling scheme from atmosphere, ocean and ice.
<p>1. Coupled models simulate air-sea interaction by coupling components models together. However, in state-of-the-art models such as CESM, the atmospheric model contains dynamic core and physic parameterization that are not differentiated during air-sea interaction. The dynamics-physics (D-P) coupling in CAM causes the prognostic winds of the dynamic core be interpolated onto non-staggered locations. We propose a new dynamical coupling scheme (denoted as Mod_cp) that eliminates the extra interpolation during D-P coupling for the atmosphere-ocean interaction, reducing the numerical diffusion during the dynamics-physics coupling for air-sea interactions.</p> <p>2. Using new and original dynamical coupling scheme, two coupled simulations (100 years) were conducted. Climatology of atmosphere (cam), ocean (ocn) and sea ice (ice) model simulations are archived here (last 50 years). The resolution is around 1 latitude x 1 longitude.</p> <p>3. B1850_mod_cp denotes the simulation with new dynamical coupling scheme, B1850_f09_g16 denotes the simulation with original scheme.</p>
Water availability drives fine root dynamics in a Eucalyptus woodland under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration
<p>Fine roots are a key component of carbon and nutrient dynamics in forest ecosystems. Rising atmospheric [CO<sub>2</sub>] (eCO<sub>2</sub>) is likely to alter the production and activity of fine roots, with important consequences for forest carbon storage. Yet empirical evidence of the role of eCO<sub>2</sub> in driving root dynamics in low-nutrient forested ecosystems is limited, particularly for grassy woodlands, an ecosystem type of global importance.</p> <p>We sampled fine roots across seasons over a two-year period to examine the effects of eCO<sub>2</sub> on their biomass, production, turnover and functional traits in a native mature grassy <i>Eucalyptus</i> woodland in eastern Australia (EucFACE).</p> <p>Fine root biomass, production and turnover varied greatly through time, increasing as soil water content declined. Despite a lack of persistent effects of eCO<sub>2</sub> on fine root biomass, production or turnover across the two-year sampling period, we found enhanced production pulses under eCO<sub>2</sub> between 10-30 cm soil depth. These eCO<sub>2</sub>-driven production pulses were associated with large changes in abiotic conditions. In addition, eCO<sub>2</sub> led to greater carbon and phosphorus concentrations in fine roots and increased root diameter, but no detectable effects on other morphological traits.</p> <p>Synthesis. We found minor quantitative effects of eCO<sub>2</sub> on fine root biomass dynamics that were largely driven by temporal variations in soil water availability. Our results suggest that in this mature grassy woodland, and perhaps also in other similar forested ecosystem types characterized by low phosphorus content in the soil, eCO<sub>2</sub> effects are small and transient. This suggests limited belowground fine root productivity responses to rising atmospheric CO<sub>2</sub> concentrations and, thus, perhaps also a limited ability of these systems to mitigate climate change through belowground mechanisms.</p>

Prestorm atmospheric dynamic variable profiling dataset in Beijing as observed from the Radar wind profiler mesonet
<p>This dataset contains prestorm atmospheric dynamical variables of 30 minutes before rainfall onset in summer (June ~ August) for the period 2018–2019, which is determined by the measurements from the triangular mesonet of radar wind profile in Beijing. Each data file is stored in CSV format, containing the triangle area averaged divergence, vertical velocity and vorticity at 400、450、500、550, 600, 650, 700, 750, 775, 800, 825, 850, 875 and 900 hPa levels. The name for each data is formatted as RWP_YYYY_NNN hPa_Lead-MM min.csv, where YYYY refers to 2018 and 2019, NNN refers to 400、450、500、550, 600, 650, 700, 750, 775, 800, 825, 850, 875 and 900 hPa, and MM refers to 12, 18, 24, 30, 36 and 42 minutes prior to rainfall onset. </p>
