MEaSUREs blue band total column water vapor sample data for the Ozone Monitoring Instrument
<p>This dataset contains the MEaSUREs OMI Total Column Water Vapor (TCWV) data and their related data used in the paper titled “Development of the MEaSUREs blue band water vapor algorithm – Towards a long-term data record” by Wang et al. (2023). The unzipped archive contains the following three directories. </p> <ol> <li>OMI-H2O-L2/ contains the MEaSUREs Level 2 data (in molecules/cm2) in netCDF4 format for January and July 2005 and 2006. Selected supporting data are also included in each file.</li> <li>OMI-H2O-L3/ contains MRaSUREs Level 3 data (0.25 degree by 0.25 degree, in molecules/cm2) generated using the standard filtering criteria in netCDF4 format for January and July 2005 and 2006. Selected supporting data are also included.</li> <li>Model3_ncresult/ contains netCDF4 formatted files for the MEaSUREs OMI TCWV data (in mm), the AMSR_E TCWV data sampled onto the corresponding OMI pixel locations, and the LightGBM model 3 predictions for the OMI pixels.</li> </ol> <p>The linux command ‘ncdump -h filename’ can be used to examine the contents of netCDF4 files. UBGG-3m: Fine-grained urban blue-green-gray landscape dataset for 36 Chinese cities based on deep learning network
<p>The UBGG dataset provides easily access and leverage to researchers and analysts, which is stored in the following Zenodo repository (<a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8053333">https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8352777</a>). The UBGG dataset consists of two main components:</p> <ul> <li><strong>UBGG-3m: the fine-grained UBGG map product of 36 metropolises in China.</strong> The UBGG-3m dataset captures the intricate urban landscape features with remarkable precision, providing a detailed representation at an impressive 3-meter resolution. Fig. 1 in User Guides shows the classification results for 36 Chinese metropolises. Researchers can delve into the nuances of the UBGG continuum, gaining invaluable insights into the interplay between the blue, green, and gray elements of urban environments in each metropolis.</li> </ul> <ul> <li><strong>UBGGset:</strong> <strong>the large-volume sample dataset to support the UBGG deep learning research.</strong> Complementing the UBGG-3m dataset, UBGGset serves as a large-volume sample dataset specifically tailored to support and foster UBGG research endeavors (Fig. 2). Predicted Surficial Blue Carbon Maps for Blackbird Creek and St. Jones River Tidal Salt Marshes using 2014-2023 Landsat-8 OLI records
These data tables reflect the predictions of a gradient boosted trees model for predicting soil organic matter (SOM) in the surficial layer of tidal marsh soils. The model was trained on soil core data related to its corresponding spectral characteristics from decadal Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager data (see associated publication Warner et al. "Leveraging a decade of Landsat-8 spectral records for mapping blue carbon storage in tidal salt marshes"). This is a modeled data product designed to illustrate spatial patterns of organic matter storage as predicted by satellite data.
California Blue Oak reproduction and recruitment, Sierra Foothills, 2005-2010
This data archive contributes to the study of blue oak conservation by quantifying reproductive success (numbers of new seedlings and their sizes) and survival and growth of the younger life stages (seedlings and saplings), and by exploring how the timing of grazing, topographical variables, and rainfall limit reproduction, growth, and survival for these life stages, helping to identify potential management and restoration strategies to enhance the population viability of blue oak. We followed a population of blue oak (Quercus douglasii) seedlings and saplings in the Sierra Nevada foothills, measuring adult seed production and initial seedling recruitment (number and size of new seedlings), seedling growth and survival, seedling recruitment to saplings (growing greater than 10 cm in height), and sapling growth and survival. We tested the impacts on these demographic processes of timing and intensity of grazing, light availability, water availability, and individual size. We published our analysis of these data as part of the 8th Oak Woodland Symposium. This data archive contains the underlying data for our analysis plus some data we did not include in our analysis (residual dry matter, photosynthetically active radiation, percent exotic/native cover), including raw data and R and Perl scripts used to format them for analysis, and additional information not included in the conference proceedings.
Upper Blue River geology clipped to the Andrews Experimental Forest, 1991
Rock units of parts of the Blue River basin (including the Lookout Creek watershed and upper Blue River above the junction with Lookout Creek), were described by several investigators who covered different portions of the basin at different scales. A unit correlation table was developed (see below) and units were manuscripted using Priest et al. (1988) for Lookout Creek and Walker and Duncan (1989) for upper Blue River. Units were digitized and attributed using the investigators' descriptions. The upper Blue River geology layer was clipped by the H.J. Andrews boundary to create this layer. Rock unit strength was added as an attribute when the geology layer was used in a landslide hazard analysis. Rock strength was determined by Swanson based on rock type and age.

Landslide inventory (1953-1996), Andrews Experimental Forest and Blue River Basin. This layer is a combination of data from four landslide inventory efforts that have been conducted in the area beginning in the late 1960's. Data represent landslide occurrences between 1953 and 1996. Data are in the UTM coordinate system; zone 10, NAD27. The data table that describes the characteristics of the landslides inventoried in the following: Individual layers tied to inventories by Ted Dyrness, Fred Swanson, Dan Marion, and Matt Wallenstein were appended and linked to the shape file. This file is associated with the slideinv layer, which is a combination of data from four landslide inventory efforts that have been conducted in the area beginning in the late 1960's. Points have been screen digitized from field maps using streams, roads, contour lines, and harvest units as reference layers.
LiDAR data (October 2011) for the Blue River Watershed, Willamette National Forest
Watershed Sciences, Inc. (WSI) collected Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data on October 27th, 28th and November 1st, 2011 for the United States Forest Service and Environmental Protection Agency. This study includes bare-earth, highest hit, vegetation height, and intensity grids. The raw point cloud data is available on request, due to massive size of the data. Derived entities include aspect, percent slope, hill shades (bare-earth and high hits), flow accumulation grid, and contours.
Late-Holocene paleofloods in the Upper Little Tennessee River valley, Southern Blue Ridge Mountains, USA.
We derive a paleoflood chronology for the past 2000 years from three stratigraphic sections of overbank sediments with dates from radiocarbon, luminescence, 137Cs techniques, and historical records. Particle sizes were measured in 6-15 year intervals in post-1870 sediments and in 45-170 year intervals in pre-1870 sediments using an automatic laser analyzer. The sedimentological characteristics of ad 1948-2009 deposits were compared with gaging records, demonstrating that fine sand content and sorting discern time intervals of large floods, but flood magnitudes are not well resolved. This modern analog was applied to pre-1870 sediments and revealed two periods in the last 2000 years with large floods during AD 650-850 and AD 1100-1350, which are times when the regional tree-ring record showed extreme wetness and no severe or extreme droughts. Our findings indicate flood-prone phases of transitional climate at the beginning and end of the "Medieval Warm Period" (MWP), and relatively subdued flooding during the "Little Ice Age" (LIA), possibly correlated with rearrangement of macro-scale atmospheric circulation patterns between the MWP and the LIA. Soil seedbank analysis under experimental drought and delayed monsoon treatments in blue grama and black grama grassland at Sevilleta
This study investigated the question, "Does climate change affect vegetation and seed bank composition in desert grasslands?" The work was done in the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge, New Mexico, USA, in in the Extreme Drought in Grassland Experiment (EDGE). Vegetation and seed bank species composition were recorded in black grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) and blue grama (B. gracilis) grasslands at Sevilleta. At each site, two rainfall manipulations and ambient controls were established in 2013 (n=10). Treatments included extreme drought (-66% rainfall reduction) and delayed monsoon (precipitation captured during July-August and reapplied during September-October). Aboveground species composition was assessed and composite soil samples were collected in 2017, five years after the experiment started. Seed bank composition was evaluated using the seedling emergence method. Rainfall treatments increased aboveground species richness at both sites, and seed bank richness only in the blue grama community. Vegetation cover was reduced by both rainfall manipulations, but seed bank density increased or remained the same compared with controls. In aboveground vegetation, cover of annual and perennial forbs increased, and dominant perennial grasses decreased. In the soil seed bank, species composition was similar among all treatments and was dominated by annual and perennial forbs. The seed bank was more resistant to drought than aboveground vegetation. Because seed banks enhance long-term community stability, their drought resistance plays an important role in maintaining ecosystem processes during and following drought in these grassland communities.

Blue Mussel Stable Isotope Analysis on Islands of the Virginia Coast As climate change causes ocean temperatures to rise, some intertidal organisms, like blue mussels (Mytilus edulis), are retreating northward. Species that consume blue mussels, like the federally-threatened red knot (Calidris canutus rufa), may be negatively affected by this range contraction. We investigated the variation in blue mussel abundance from 2010 - 2018 on Virginia's barrier islands, where migrating red knots eat recently settled blue mussels, and compared the oxygen isotopic composition of blue mussel shell calcite (delta^18Oc; n = 74) to delta^18Oc, which is calculated to be in equilibrium with regional ocean water, to predict their origins. During peak red knot migration (May 14 - 27), between 34 - 538 blue mussels were available/core sample, with blue mussel abundance decreasing over time. Stable isotope analyses indicated that shell umbo delta^18Oc (mean = -0.23o/oo, SE = 0.12) was more ^18O enriched than shell edge delta^18Oc (mean = -0.53 o/oo, SE = 0.10). Blue mussel umbo delta^18Oc was not different than the range of delta^18Oc calculated in equilibrium with regional ocean water off the Virginia and Delaware coasts. Umbo delta^18Oc was more ^18O enriched than the expected estuarine signature at the Delaware Bay's mouth, precluding an estuarine origin, and more ^16O enriched than the expected delta^18Oc off New Hampshire's coast, likely precluding an origin that far north. We concluded that Virginia's juvenile blue mussels likely originated in the regional ocean between the Delaware Bay and Virginia. Continued increases in regional sea surface temperature may further affect the availability of blue mussels to foraging red knots in Virginia.

Salt marsh polygons were mapped by Berman et al. (2011) and modified based on imagery from Planet Team (2019). Mean seagrass shoot density measurements were based on a VCR-wide 2019 sampling effort led by McGlathery (2018).
Century-scale resilience of stored seagrass blue carbon in coastal Virginia
Blue carbon sequestration in coastal ecosystems is only relevant to climate change mitigation and carbon offset crediting if the carbon is taken out of circulation for at least a century. Here, we report data from sediment cores, up to 2.2 m deep, collected below modern Zostera marina seagrass meadows in Mid-Atlantic lagoons in Virginia, USA. Integrated data on Pb-210 and C-14 dating, sediment organic matter and carbon content, and stable isotopic and DNA analysis of sediment samples revealed that buried seagrass organic carbon persisted for centuries.

Data from: Adaptive genetic variation distinguishes Chilean blue mussels (Mytilus chilensis) from different marine environments
Chilean mussel populations have been thought to be panmictic with limited genetic structure. Genotyping-by-sequencing approaches have enabled investigation of genome-wide variation that may better distinguish populations that have evolved in different environments. We investigated neutral and adaptive genetic variation in Mytilus from six locations in southern Chile with 1,240 SNP obtained with RAD-seq. Differentiation among locations with 891 neutral SNPs was low (FST = 0.005). Higher differentiation was obtained with a panel of 58 putative outlier SNPs (FST = 0.114) indicating the potential for local adaptation. This panel identified clusters of genetically related individuals and demonstrated that much of the differentiation (~92%) could be attributed to the three major regions and environments: extreme conditions in Patagonia, inner bay influenced by aquaculture (Reloncaví́), and outer bay (Chiloé Island). Patagonia samples were most distinct, but additional analysis carried out excluding this collection also revealed adaptive divergence between inner and outer bay samples. The four locations within Reloncaví́ area were most similar with all panels of markers, likely due to similar environments, high gene flow by aquaculture practices and low geographic distance. However, fine scale structure could be detected when analyses included only this zone. Our results and the SNP markers developed will be a powerful tool supporting management and programs of this harvested species.
Data from: Effects of multiple climate change stressors on gene expression in blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus)
<p>Global climate change is predicted to increase the co-occurrence of high pCO2 and hypoxia in upwelling zones worldwide. Yet, few studies have examined the effects of these stressors on economically and ecologically important fishes. Here, we investigated short-term responses of juvenile blue rockfish (Sebastes mystinus) to independent and combined high pCO2 and hypoxia at the molecular level, using changes in gene expression and metabolic enzymatic activity to investigate potential shifts in energy metabolism. Fish were experimentally exposed to conditions associated with intensified upwelling under climate change: high pCO2 (1200 μatm, pH~7.6), hypoxia (4.0 mg O2/L), and a combined high pCO2/hypoxia treatment for 12 h, 24 h or two weeks. Muscle transcriptome profiles varied significantly among the three treatments, with limited overlap among genes responsive to both the single and combined stressors. Under elevated pCO2, blue rockfish increased expression of genes encoding proteins involved in the electron transport chain and muscle contraction. Under hypoxia, blue rockfish up regulated genes involved in oxygen and ion transport and down regulated transcriptional machinery. Under combined high pCO2 and hypoxia, blue rockfish induced a unique set of ionoregulatory and hypoxia responsive genes not expressed under the single stressors. Thus, high pCO2 and hypoxia exposure appears to induce a non-additive transcriptomic response that cannot be predicted from single stressor exposures alone, further highlighting the need for multiple stressor studies at the molecular level. Overall, lack of a major shift in cellular energetics indicates that blue rockfish may be relatively resistant to intensified upwelling conditions in the short term.</p>
