Two-bubble envelope approximation code and results

This deposit contains the code required to carry out the envelope approximation simulations used in the paper with preprint title Vacuum bubble collisions: from microphysics to gravitational waves by Oliver Gould, Satumaaria Sukuvaara, and David Weir.

The method and results are based on the following papers:

Gravitational Wave Production by Collisions: More Bubbles by Stephan J. Huber and Thomas Konstandin [arXiv:0806.1828].

Gravitational radiation from colliding vacuum bubbles: envelope approximation to many bubble collisions by Arthur Kosowsky and Michael S. Turner [arXiv:astro-ph/9211004].

Gravitational radiation from colliding vacuum bubbles by Arthur Kosowsky, Michael S. Turner and Richard Watkins [Inspire].

In the latter paper the envelope approximation is introduced in Appendix C.

There are two files:

dweir-envelope-b2842c4827ad.zip is a snapshot of the Bitbucket-hosted Git repository for the simulation code, corresponding to the commit tagged v1.1.0. Later versions of the code may exist. The snapshot was generated by the Bitbucket service and does not include the Git metadata.

two-bubbles-envelope-data.tar.gz is an archive of the simulation results used to generate the envelope approximation results seen in the preprint, as well as numerical tests and some additional numerical explorations. While the results were generated with a slightly earlier version of the code than the tagged release in this deposit, they have been confirmed to be reproducible with the code provided.

Both archives contain README.md files with further information.

Numerical simulation of the equatorial plasma bubble: the effect of seeding by the vertical winds and random background noise perturbations.

A wide variety of small-amplitude waves widely exist in the ionosphere and have significant effects on the evolution of equatorial plasma bubbles. In this paper, we simulated equatorial plasma bubbles (EPB) seeded by vertical neutral wind perturbations with wavelengths of 125 km and 250 km, and compared the morphology characteristics of plasma bubble structures with those under random noise perturbations in the background density. The numerical results showed that both vertical winds and random background noise perturbations can contribute to the growth of plasma bubbles, and the perturbations under additional random background noise can promote the growth of the plasma bubble structures faster. Additionally, several processes of the nonlinear behavior of bifurcated EPB structures, including bifurcation, pinching, and small-scale turbulent structures, were successfully obtained. Our simulation captured supersonic flows within the low-density plasma structures characterized by vertical velocities of about 1.5 km/s, which is consistent with experimental studies found in the literature.

Vapor bubbles and velocity control on the cooling rates of lava and pyroclasts during submarine eruptions

These dataset contains videos (.mp4) of experiments and the time-temperature data (.txt) measured during the experiments. Each video starts when the sample is completely submerged in the water. The temperature data represents the full experimental duration, where a spike in water temperature data to about 27 deg C on average indicates the synchronization process between the video and the data.

Books in a bubble : assessing the OAPEN Library collection

Open access infrastructure for books is becoming more mature, and it is being used by an increasing number of people. The growing importance of open access infrastructure leads to more interest in sustainability, governance and impact assessment. For this paper, we will assess the OAPEN Library. In the spring of 2022, it passed the milestone of 20,000 titles. This was a good moment to evaluate the core asset of the OAPEN Library: its collection.

How well meets the collection the needs of its users? The OAPEN Library sees global usage; the collection reflects this by offering titles in over 50 languages. The collection is not focused on a specific subject area, but the choice of medium – books and chapters, not journals and articles – is more strongly associated with the humanities and social sciences. It does not track its users, but the supporters of the OAPEN Libraries are globally distributed academic institutions, scientific and scholarly funders and publishers. An assessment of the OAPEN Library should therefore take into account the diversity of languages, subjects and users.
