Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Pyranometer (PYR) Measurements from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest and the Caribou-Poker Creeks Research Watershed near Fairbanks, Alaska
The pyranometers measure the energy flux density of global sun plus sky radiation across a broad band from 280 to 2800 nm. The sensor consists of a silicon photodiode which does not have an equal spectral response across the band. However, this does not cause serious error for measurements of solar radiation, provided the spectral distribution is not altered, such as within plant canopies. Winter measurements may be inaccurate due to snow cover.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Ultraviolet Radiation (UV) Measurements from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska
In 1993, Eppley total UV radiometers (TUVR) were installed at each climate station on 21 April at LTER1 and 5 May at LTER2. These radiometers consist of a Weston selenium barrier-layer photoelectric cell with a sealed-in quartz window, a bandpass filter to restrict the wavelength response of the photcell to the designed range (295-385 nm), and a diffusing disc of Virgin Teflon to reduce the light intensity at the filtered photocell and also to improve the adherence of the instrument to the Lambert cosine law. The disc is nearly uniform diffusing over the wavelength range of interest, as well as geometrically within the system. The terminals of the photocell are connected through a precision resistor and the signal measured as a voltage drop across the resistor. Winter measurements may be inaccurate due to snow cover.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Precipitation Weighing Bucket Measurements from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska
This data set includes year round precipitation values from LTER1 and LTER2. Sampling buckets are filled with antifreeze to melt and prevent snow build up. While these sensors work year round, tipping bucket data seems more accurate for snow free periods.

This dataset contains the hourly output from Wind sensors for the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF). This includes Level 3 weather stations as well as smaller scale and temporal studies. This data can be sorted and viewed by site, year, hour, height of measurement, mean, min, and max value. Updates of each site are different since some are still on going while other had only a 2-3 year life cycle. Winter measurements may be inaccurate due to snow cover.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Annual Active Layer Depths from 2004 to Present in the Boundary Fire Fireline near Fairbanks, Alaska
In 2004 the Boundary Fire burned an area within the Caribou Poker Creeks Research Watershed providing an opportunity to study various fire effects. When wildfire burns through a northern black spruce forest there is usually a subsequent increase in depth of thaw, due to the reduction in the depth of the organic layer. The construction of firelines with heavy machinery involves the complete removal of the organic layer and results in an even greater increase in active layer. This study was designed as a long-term comparison between depth of thaw on firelines, burned and unburned black spruce forest underlain by ice rich permafrost. This study will allow us to compare thaw depths from recent firelines to those studied at the Wickersham and Bonanza Creek fireline study sites. Within the fireline bulldozers were used to knock down and in some cases remove, the trees and organic layer. Within the safety zone an area approximately 30 m x 30 m was cleared to mineral soil. After the fire was out an excavator was used to return the organic material to the fireline and safety zones.

In 2001 the Survey Line Fire burned an area of black spruce forest along the Tanana River adjacent to the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest. In 2002 two research sites were established within the burn, one in a dry area and one in a wet area. When wildfire burns through a northern black spruce forest there is usually a subsequent increase in depth of thaw, due to the reduction in the depth of the organic layer. Thaw depth is being measured annually at tweny points within each of these sites.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Relative Humidity Measurements (mean, min, max) at 50 cm and 150 cm from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska
This dataset contains the hourly output from relative humidity sensors for the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF). Most sites have two sensors, one at 50 cm and one at 150cm. This includes Level 3 weather stations as well as smaller scale and temporal studies. This data can be sorted and viewed by site, year, hour, height of measurement, mean, min, and max value. Updates of each site are different since some are still on going while other had only a 2 - 3 year life cycle. This information can be found in the site descriptions and in the metadata.
Bonanza Creek LTER: Hourly Soil Temperature Measurements at Various Depths from 1988 to Present in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest near Fairbanks, Alaska
A collection of soil temperatures from upland and floodplain sites. Temperatures are recorded from a range of depths: Surface,0, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 cm. Depths represent the depth below the organic mineral interface (O/M) that the sensor was placed. Sensors in the organic soil layers were added at some sites and are given a negative depth value to indicate they were placed above the O/M interface. There is also a Surface temperature which is kept in the top few centimeters of the forest floor.

Bonanza Creek LTER: Tree Inventory Data from 1989 to present at Core research sites in Interior Alaska
This is the data from the periodic (3-10 yr interval) tree inventory monitoring of tree growth within the vegetation control plots. In 2013 and 2014, an initial tree inventory was done on each site belonging to the Regional Site Network (RSN). Some young RSN sites had no, or very few trees. In general, inventory is every 5 years presently; the most recent collection was in 2018 and next scheduled collection is for 2023.

Precipitation is measured at many sites within BCEF using TE525 tipping buckets. These sensors are able to detect .254mm of precipitation and record hourly totals of rainfall or throughfall. It should be noted the tipping buckets within forested sites are subject to clogging by forest debris whcih can result in under reporting of rain events as well as over reporting upon release of the collected precipitation. There is data from floodplains to upland sites along a range of successional gradients.

A collection of soil moisture from upland and floodplain sites. Moisture is recorded from a range of depths: 5, 10, 20, and 50 cm. Data was recorded using Campbell Scientific dataloggers. The sensors in use are CS615 water content reflectometers. The period average is recorded and converted to volumetric water content using the Topp's equation.
