Edward FitzGerald Life and Letters – Analysis of books and other material
<p>These files form part of an archive of research material relating to the Life and Letters of Edward FitzGerald. The data have been compiled by independent researchers W H (Bill) Martin and Sandra Mason; their contact details are below. The files comprise a number of searchable listings of information about FitzGerald’s letters and other aspects of his life. The information formed input to a book on Edward FitzGerald which is referenced below.</p> <p>This section of the archive contains three databases relating to FitzGerald’s library of books and other literary papers. The first of these, <em>efgbooks</em>, lists books known to have been in his possession from catalogues of sales of his effects after his death and a listing made by John Glyde (see references below). The second database, <em>efgtrinitycatal</em>, documents the holdings of books and other material owned by FitzGerald that are currently held in the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge. The third database, <em>efgtrinitydetail</em>, provides further details of the elements in the Trinity College FitzGerald holdings that we examined in more detail. An explanatory README text file contains tables showing the fields included in the databases and giving definitions of them and of the codings used where relevant. </p>
Accommodation Facilities and Ratings on Booking for 10 European Cities
<p>This dataset, collected on 11/11/2024, includes data from 4,806 accommodations across 10 European cities: Barcelona, Reykjavík, Amsterdam, Prague, Sofia, Porto, Edinburgh, Berlin, Dubrovnik, and Innsbruck. With prices corresponding to the 16/07/2025 night (2 adults and 1 room), it features global ratings, and category scores like cleanliness, comfort, staff, and location, along with details on available amenities and accommodation types. The dataset also covers check-in/check-out policies, pet policies, exact addresses, and review counts. It is designed to analyze key factors to a positive accommodation experience, and it allows comparisons across cities and types of accommodations.</p>
British Library Books genre detection model
<p><strong>Model description</strong></p> <p>This model is intended to predict, from the title of a book, whether it is 'fiction' or 'non-fiction'.</p> <p>This model was trained on data created from the <a href="https://www.bl.uk/collection-guides/digitised-printed-books">Digitised printed books (18th-19th Century)</a> book collection. The datasets in this collection are comprised and derived from 49,455 digitised books (65,227 volumes), mainly from the 19th Century. This dataset is dominated by English language books and includes books in several other languages in much smaller numbers. </p> <p>This model was originally developed for use as part of the <a href="https://livingwithmachines.ac.uk/">Living with Machines</a> project to be able to 'segment' this large dataset of books into different categories based on a 'crude' classification of genre i.e. whether the title was `fiction` or `non-fiction`.</p> <p>The model's training data (discussed more below) primarily consists of 19th Century book titles from the <a href="https://www.bl.uk/collection-guides/digitised-printed-books">British Library Digitised printed books (18th-19th century)</a> collection. These books have been catalogued according to British Library cataloguing practices. The model is likely to perform worse on any book titles from earlier or later periods. While the model is multilingual, it has training data in non-English book titles; these appear much less frequently.</p> <p><strong>How to use</strong></p> <p>To use this within fastai, first install version 2 of the fastai library. Following the documentation <a href="https://docs.fast.ai/#Installing">instructions</a>. This dataset is not representative of books from the period covered with biases towards certain types (travel) and a likely absence of books that were difficult to digitise.</p> <p>The formatting of the British Library books corpus titles may differ from other collections, resulting in worse performance on other collections. It is recommended to evaluate the performance of the model before applying it to your own data. Likely, this model won't perform well for contemporary book titles without further fine-tuning.</p> <p><strong>Training data</strong></p> <p>The training data for this model will be available from the British Libary Research Repository shortly.</p> <p>The training data was created using the Zooniverse platform. British Library cataloguers carried out the majority of the annotations used as training data. DNA origami book biosensor for multiplex detection of cancer-associated nucleic acids
<p>This dataset contains the raw data that were used for the publication entitled, "DNA origami book biosensor for multiplex detection of cancer-associated nucleic acids" published in Nanoscale.</p> <p> </p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>DNA nanotechnology provides a promising approach for the development of biomedical point-of-care diagnostic nanoscale devices that are easy to use and cost-effective, highly sensitive and thus constitute an alternative to expensive, complex diagnostic devices. Moreover, DNA nanotechnology-based devices are particularly advantageous for applications in oncology, owing to being ideally suited for the detection of cancer-associated nucleic acids, including circulating tumor-derived DNA fragments (ctDNAs), circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) and other RNA species. Here, we present a dynamic DNA origami book biosensor that is precisely decorated with arrays of fluorophores acting as donors and acceptors and also fluorescence quenchers that produce a strong optical readout upon exposure to external stimuli for the single or dual detection of target oligonucleotides and miRNAs. This biosensor allowed the detection of target molecules either through the decrease of Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) or an increase in the fluorescence intensity profile owing to a rotation of the constituent top layer of the structure. Single-DNA origami experiments showed that detection of two targets can be achieved simultaneously within 10 min with a limit of detection in the range of 1–10 pM. Overall, our DNA origami book biosensor design showed sensitive and specific detection of synthetic target oligonucleotides and natural miRNAs extracted from cancer cells. Based on these results, we foresee that our DNA origami biosensor may be developed into a cost-effective point-of-care diagnostic strategy for the specific and sensitive detection of a variety of DNAs and RNAs, such as ctDNAs, miRNAs, mRNAs, and viral DNA/RNAs in human samples.</p>

<p>This data set is used to reproduce examples in the open-source book <a href="https://hydrosolutions.github.io/caham_book/">"Modeling of Hydrological Systems in Semi-Arid Central Asia"</a> which is part of a free course on hydrological modeling in Central Asia. Data from the OPERAS business models survey on open access books
<p>OPERAS (the European Research Infrastructure for the development of open scholarly communication in the social sciences and humanities) has conducted a survey of publishing organisations throughout Europe to identify and better understand existing and potential business models to support the Open Access publication of research monographs. The results of the survey are used to inform the formulation of recommendations about how to create a sustainable open access book publishing ecosystem within Europe.</p> <p>The survey was designed to serve two core aims: <br> 1. To further, better or improve our understanding of the scholarly publishing landscape and of the challenges that publishers face in the context of publishing OA monographs;<br> 2. To identify main trends (including opportunities and challenges) and the knowledge of collaborative funding and infrastructure models in OA publishing in SSH. </p> <p>The survey was open between 16 February and 14 April 2021.</p> <p>The results are presented in two versions of the white paper of the Open Access Business Models Special Interest Group: Stone, Graham, Błaszczyńska, Marta, Lebon, Chloé, Morka, Agata, Mosterd, Tom, Mounier, Pierre, Proudman, Vanessa, Speicher, Lara, & Melinščak Zlodi, Iva. Best Books Ever Dataset
<p>The dataset has been collected in the frame of the Prac1 of the subject Tipology and Data Life Cycle of the Master's Degree in Data Science of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC).</p> <p>The dataset contains 25 variables and 52478 records corresponding to books on the GoodReads Best Books Ever list (the larges list on the site).</p> <p>Original code used to retrieve the dataset can be found on github repository: <a href="https://github.com/scostap/goodreads_bbe_dataset">github.com/scostap/goodreads_bbe_dataset</a></p> <p>The data was retrieved in two sets, the first 30000 books and then the remainig 22478. Dates were not parsed and reformated on the second chunk so publishDate and firstPublishDate are representet in a mm/dd/yyyy format for the first 30000 records and Month Day Year for the rest.</p> <p>Book cover images can be optionally downloaded from the url in the 'coverImg' field. Data accompanying the book review "A new general dictionary of Ume Saami"
<p>This is a set of tables illustrating the differences between two dictionaries of Ume Saami (Schlachter 1958 and Barruk 2018). Headwords with the initial <em>v</em> from both dictionaries have been aligned to show the common and differing shares of vocabulary. A further analysis is published in the book review (Kuokkala 2020) in Finnisch-Ugrische Forschungen (<a href="https://doi.org/10.33339/fuf.99934">doi.org/10.33339/fuf.99934</a>). The data from Schlachter 1958 has been converted into the modern orthography with a script found at <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4162535">doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4162535</a> and published in its entirety at <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4163676">doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.4163676</a>.</p>
The Elusive Book, or the Digitization of the Materiality[-ies] of Books
<p>13<sup>th</sup> Annual Schoenberg Symposium on Manuscript Studies in the Digital Age: <em>invited</em> <em>presentation - online delivery, ‘The Elusive Book, </em><em>or the Digitization of the Materiality[-ies] of Books’</em> (18/11/2020)</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>The digitization of books is generally understood as the capture of the page contents through photography and imaging. Not all features of books can be digitally acquired in this manner— we will refer to these as <em>untransferable</em> characteristics— and models and descriptive metadata are necessary steps to computerize important information about the structure and materiality of documents. Digitization, in fact, can do much more than reproducing books as texts to be read, and books are much more than flat sequences of pages: there is much information in books that has been largely ignored— so far. Among these, we find the physical form of books (e.g., bindings, the form and materials of its pages, inks, decorations, usage accretions, stains, and so on). While digitization tends to concentrate on the remediation of the content of books, we argue for an increased interest in the transmediation of the materiality of books. This digital representation and manipulation of an object’s materiality is achieved through a number of means, metadata designation being one of the most established processes to bring these <em>untransferable</em> features into the digital. Digital surrogates created in this manner have the potency to be more than mere replacements of the original objects. Instead, when the transformative nature of the digitization process is more fully harnessed, they can become digital cultural objects: digital objects that transcend the originals, work in synergy with them, and make them something more.</p> <p>Bio</p> <p>Alberto Campagnolo trained as a book conservator at the European Course for Conservators/Restorers of Book Materials (1998-2001) in Spoleto, Italy and has worked in that capacity in various institutions, amongst which the National Museum Wales, London Metropolitan Archives, St. Catherine’s Monastery (Egypt), and the Vatican Library. He studied Conservation of Library and Archive Materials (2001-2006) at Ca’ Foscari University Venice, Italy and then read for an MA in Digital Culture and Technology (2007-2009) at King’s College London. He pursued a PhD (2010-2015) on an <a href="http://ualresearchonline.arts.ac.uk/8749/">automated visualization of historical bookbinding structures</a> at the <a href="https://www.ligatus.org.uk/">Ligatus Research Centre</a> (University of the Arts, London). He is an adjunct professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Udine, Italy (2018-ongoing). Alberto has been collaborating (2013-ongoing) with Dot Porter (Schoenberg Institute for Manuscript Studies, University of Pennsylvania) on <a href="https://viscoll.org/">VisColl</a>, a modelling and visualization tool for the gathering structure of books in codex format. Since 2018 he has been an acting member of the <a href="https://iada-home.org/">IADA</a> board. He has been part of the Editorial board of the <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/yjpc20/current">Journal of Paper Conservation</a> since 2016, and he is now co-editor in-Chief with Aurélie Martin.</p>
Refined personal name data from the census book of Vodskaja pjatina
<p>The data contains approximately 36,000 personal names derived from medieval Russian documentation. More preciously, names are collected from an edited version of the census book of Vodskaja pjatina, which was one of the five administrative areas in the late 15<sup>th</sup> century Novgorod.</p> <p>Editions were compiled in parts and the first two, which cover the northernmost region, are called <em>Переписная окладная книга по новугороду вотской пятины</em> (1851, 1852)(POKV I‒II). The third part of the book series <em>Новгородские пистсовые книги</em> (1868)(NPK III) covers the southern and western parts of the study area.</p> <p>The process of obtaining the personal from the inscription has been following: First, editions of the census book were obtained as scanned PDF files. These were transformed as editable copies by using OCR (=Optical Character Recognition) software Abbyy. The program read the original mid-19<sup>th</sup> century Russian text adequately with its old Russian alphabet package.</p> <p>After the initial corrections, a Python script was written to harvest the personal names. This was based on exploiting the systematic formalities in how most of the names were presented in the census book. The script looked for abbreviations “дв.” and “д.” and extracted all following capitalized words until section end markers “.”, “;” or “:”. As an output, a name to pogost matrix was produced, which held the raw frequencies of each word in each pogost.</p> <p>The process of cleaning the name data, in turn, has been done mostly by data wrangling program OpenRefine in following manner: For starters, all name forms shorter than four characters were removed as there were no personal names consisting of three or less letters. Furthermore, nouns that were not names were removed. This meant discarding expressions that described person’s special feature or profession, like such as being a widow (“вдова”) or working as a deacon (“діакъ”). For some reason, editors followed inconsistent conventions in capitalizing these non-name nouns.</p> <p>In addition, some orthographical and morphological harmonization was done on the data. The letter <em>ы </em>was cut from the end of bynames, where it denotes plurality. Similarity of so called soft and hard signs, <em>ь </em>and <em>ъ</em> caused some problems. As the latter one is not used in contemporary Russian and was not used in the original documents either (Неволин 1853 : 4 (in Appendix 1)) it was removed. The soft sign <em>ь </em>was also removed because it was absent in the original documents and it had been used inconsistently by the editors. The letter <em>ѣ</em> (yat) is rarely used in personal names but nevertheless, it was changed to <em>е </em>(like as it is in contemporary Russian) as since it was often confused with soft and hard signs (<em>ь </em>and <em>ъ</em>). Furthermore, the letter <em>ѳ </em>(fita) was often erroneously recognized as <em>о </em>or <em>е. </em>As it is only found in NPK III and only in the beginning of certain names, which all are also written with “Ф” (e.g. “Ѳедко” vs. “Федко”), it was replaced with <em>Ф</em>.</p> <p>In the second phase most of the erroneous orthographies were corrected. We do not detail herescribe all the OCR-errors here that were found, but in the following a short description is given of the most significant corrections. There were, for example, many letters whose similarity caused problems for the OCR-program (e.g. <em>и </em>/ <em>й </em>and <em>б </em>/ <em>в</em>). In these cases, the correct orthography was sought in the census book editions and accordingly, Openrefine was used to change erroneous forms to right correct ones.</p> <p>After the corrections were made, the number of name types (= name variants) was reduced from 4942 to 2748. The Overall overall number of name tokens was dropped as well: from 36,405 to 35,726. Of the name types, more than half (1484) have only one occurrence.</p> <p>The refined and harmonized data is published as pogost-by-name frequency tabulations (<em>pogost,</em> equivalent of English <em>parish</em>). <p>This dataset contains ISBNs and below described metadata of 5199 books which Lithuanian universities and research institutions submitted as their best research outputs to get state funding after annual research evaluations from 2008 to 2020. Animal Communicator International Scan of Books, Websites, Animal Communicator Directory
<p>Four datasets are included focusing on animal communicators (AC): practitioners of intuitive interspecies communication (IIC).</p> <p><strong>Dataset #1:</strong> International English language websites data set (n = 400). To be included and coded, websites had to meet the following 3 criteria: (1) have an English language version of the website, (2) currently offer private AC consultations, and (3) be identified before website analysis was determined comprehensive enough to represent the international scope of AC (Oct. 30, 2020). Dataset includes books’ titles, descriptions, front and back covers and tables of contents where available. Where it was not clear whether the author was an animal communicator who consulted with clients, we did additional online searches to make this determination. All books had an English language printed copy of the book. We excluded books that were available in electronic copy only. We expanded our initial content inclusion criteria used in the website report beyond individuals currently offering consultations as professional animal communicators to include: (1) professional animal communicators who have since retired; (2) individuals who work intensively with animals in other capacities such as healing, but also report instances of IIC; (3) individuals who may not have worked as professional animal communicators, but write about their own lived experience of the phenomena; and (4) books written by individuals who are not ACs but have interviewed ACs. Where a book was written by two authors, or in some cases, an animal communicator with an additional author, we included both authors in our formal citation. Compiled to identify and summarize the ways in which ACs were describing essential processes for conducting a successful intuitive communication session with animals, and thus provide an overview of what happens in an IIC session. Selection criteria: We were seeking succinct summaries from ACs. The intent was not to dig into and analyze processes in detail, but rather to summarize and synthesize the essential processes and steps as the ACs were reporting them. As such, it was beyond the scope of this study to analyze reported example communications or analyze processes in books where the entirety of the book was describing communications with animals. Publication date range: 1998-2019. Close to 300 pages were analyzed. The actual "how-to" excerpts are not included as they are subject to copyright.
