<p>Dhanesar Kherā is near the village of Icchāwar or Nicchāwar in Jaspura Tahsil, Banda District, Uttar Pradesh, located approximately at 25.28°N 80.57°E. The bronze statue was discovered with two others and published by William Hooey and Vincent Arthur Smith in 1895. Since 1969 it has been kept in the British Museum. The other two statues from the hoard are in the National Museum, Bangkok, and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City.</p>

From the sculpture's description on artsmia.org: *"This image of Buddha Shakyamuni conforms closely to the classic style evolved by the early Dvaravati sculptors. The face is square, mouth wide, nose flat and hair curls large. From the scuplture's description on artsmia.org: *'This head belongs stylistically to the latter part of the reign of King Jayavarman VII (1181–1219), a devout Buddhist who established the Bayon as his state temple in the Khmer capital of Angkor and commissioned numerous Buddhist sculptures to fill that space and others. The largely abandoned brick stupas (reliquary buildings) and temples were once lavishly decorated with multicolored stucco (plaster) molding and sculpture... This sensitively modeled Buddha head reflects the meditative calm and somewhat sweet, humanistic quality associated with art of the neighboring Pala dynasty of Bengal, India. Its Buddhist sculptural traditions had reached Pagan by about 1000 CE through the portable mediums of bronze and terracotta.'
