A monthly shortwave radiative forcing kernel for surface albedo change using CERES satellite data

We present a radiative kernel for surface albedo change founded on a novel, simplified parameterization of shortwave radiative transfer driven with inputs from the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) Energy Balance and Filled (EBAF) Edition 4.0 products based on a 16-year climatology (2001-2016). Both monthly temporally-explicit and monthly climatological mean CERES albedo change kernels (CACK) are provided with their respective uncertainty layers. Octave script files for generating monthly CACK from CERES EBAF data and demonstrating the application of CACK with user-specified temporal and spatial extents are also included.

The Provost of Ceres

Situated in a niche on a building opposite the Ceres Inn in the village of Ceres, Fife, Scotland, is the statue known as "The Provost of Ceres". It represents the Rev Thomas Buchanan, a man of learning and a nephew of George Buchanan, the famous historian. He was minister of the village Kirk and the last Provost of Ceres. The statue was originally sited in the wall of the old Manse until a new owner of the Manse sold it to a man in Cupar in 1933. Such was the indignation caused by the loss of the figure to the village that the people of Ceres insisted he be brought back as soon as possible. Sufficient funds were raised by the villagers to buy the figure back and erect it in its present position. He was officially unveiled at l pm on the Saturday of the Ceres Games in June 1939. The base scene originally from a fireplace is held to be 'picturing the turning point of THE BATTLE OF BANNOCHBURN, Duncan breaking cover with his horsemen, sending the Sassenachs out drowning in the marshes'. Recent replenishment of aliphatic organics on Ceres from a large subsurface reservoir

Ceres hosts significant aliphatic-organic concentrations, ranging from approximately 5 wt.% to >30 wt.% in specific surface areas. The origins and persistence of these organics are under debate due to the intense aliphatic signature and radiation levels in Ceres' orbit, which would typically lead to their destruction, hindering detection. To investigate this, we conducted laboratory experiments to replicate how the signature of the organic-rich regions would degrade due to radiation. Our findings indicate a fast degradation rate, implying the exposure of buried organics within the last few million years. This degradation rate, coupled with observed quantities, implies that the aliphatics must be present in substantial quantities within the shallow subsurface. Our estimates suggest an initial aliphatic abundance 2-30 times greater than currently observed, surpassing significantly the levels found in carbonaceous chondrites, indicating either a significant concentration or remarkable purity.
