STOP-IT Real-Time Sensor Data Protection (RSDP)

<p>Sensors, and other devices, generate large amounts of data, which can be used for different purposes; for example, controlling the proper functioning of a critical infrastructure, performing predictive maintenance actions or making decisions that improve the productivity of an industrial plant. However, the use or analysis of erroneous or corrupt data can cause catastrophic situations. For this reason, it is very important to be able to guarantee the integrity of the data generated by sensors, or other devices, which will be used to perform relevant actions for a critical infrastructure, industrial plant, etc. The RSDP tool provides exactly that service, it checks the integrity of the data that has been previously stored in the system, and this can be guaranteed thanks to the use of Blockchain, or DLT, technologies.</p>

Research Data Management and data protection in the Social Sciences [Workshop recording]

<p>This online workshop organized by The Austrian Social Science Data Archive (AUSSDA) focused on the Research Data Management basics, Data Management Plans and common data protection issues in the Social Sciences.</p> <p>The first part of the workshop was dedicated to RDM basics and Data Management Plans (DMPs). In many projects, DMPs are mandatory deliverables that need to be submitted at the beginning of a project and are updated throughout the project life cycle. During the workshop, it was explained which aspect funders expect to be part of DMPs in Social Sciences and how researchers can benefit from (writing) these documents.</p> <p>In the second part of the workshop, data protection issues that are common in Social Sciences were addressed and how they can be handled. In particular, differences in the curation of quantitative and qualitative data need in order to comply with data protection regulations in general and AUSSDA deposit guidelines in particular. Presentation on how AUSSDA scans quantitative data for potential data protection violations using STATA and gives participants the opportunity to test the code on their own data and devices.</p> <p>The video is available on<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhiL9J-Iwqg"> the&nbsp;CESSDA Training&nbsp;YouTube channel</a>.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Shark movement strategies influence poaching risk and can guide enforcement decisions in a large, remote Marine Protected Area

<ol> <li>Large, remote marine protected areas (MPAs) containing both reef and pelagic habitats, have been shown to offer considerable refuge to populations of reef-associated sharks. Many large MPAs are, however, impacted by illegal fishing activity conducted by unlicensed vessels. While enforcement of these reserves is often expensive, it would likely benefit from the integration of ecological data on the mobile animals they are designed to protect. Consequently, shark populations in some protected areas continue to decline, as they remain a prime target for illegal fishers.</li> <li>To understand shark movements and their vulnerability to illegal fishing, three years of acoustic tracking data, from 101 reef-associated sharks, were analysed as movement networks to explore the predictability of movement patterns and identify key movement corridors within the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) MPA. We examined how space use and connectivity overlap with spatially-explicit risk of illegal fishing, through data obtained from the management consultancy enforcing the MPA.</li> <li>Using individual-based models, the movement networks of two sympatric shark species were efficiently predicted with distance-decay functions (&gt;95% movements accurately predicted). Model outliers were used to highlight the locations with unexpectedly high movement rates where MPA enforcement patrols might most efficiently mitigate predator removal.</li> <li>Activity space estimates and network metrics illustrate that silvertip sharks were more dynamic, less resident and link larger components of the MPA than grey reef sharks. However, we show that this behaviour potentially enhances their exposure to illegal fishing activity.</li> <li> <i>Synthesis and applications. </i>Marine protected area (MPA) enforcement strategies are often limited by resources. The British Indian Ocean Territory MPA, one of the world's largest 'no take' MPAs, has a single patrol vessel to enforce 640,000 km<sup>2</sup> of open ocean, atoll and reef ecosystems. We argue that to optimise the patrol vessel search strategy and thus enhance their protective capacity, ecological data on the space use and movements of desirable species, such as large-bodied reef predators, must be incorporated into management plans. Here, we use electronic tracking data to evaluate how shark movement dynamics influence species mortality trajectories in exploited reef ecosystems. In doing so we discuss how network analyses of such data might be applied for protected area enforcement.</li> </ol>

Data from: Host manipulation by an ichneumonid spider ectoparasitoid that takes advantage of preprogrammed web-building behaviour for its cocoon protection

Host manipulation by parasites and parasitoids is a fascinating phenomenon within evolutionary ecology, representing an example of extended phenotypes. To elucidate the mechanism of host manipulation, revealing the origin and function of the invoked actions is essential. Our study focused on the ichneumonid spider ectoparasitoid Reclinervellus nielseni, which turns its host spider (Cyclosa argenteoalba) into a drugged navvy, to modify the web structure into a more persistent cocoon web so that the wasp can pupate safely on this web after the spider's death. We focused on whether the cocoon web originated from the resting web that an unparasitized spider builds before moulting, by comparing web structures, building behaviour and silk spectral/tensile properties. We found that both resting and cocoon webs have reduced numbers of radii decorated by numerous fibrous threads and specific decorating behaviour was identical, suggesting that the cocoon web in this system has roots in the innate resting web and ecdysteroid-related components may be responsible for the manipulation. We also show that these decorations reflect UV light, possibly to prevent damage by flying web-destroyers such as birds or large insects. Furthermore, the tensile test revealed that the spider is induced to repeat certain behavioural steps in addition to resting web construction so that many more threads are laid down for web reinforcement.

Data from: Sleep and subjective age: Protect your sleep if you want to feel young

<p>The current studies examined the impact of insufficient sleep and sleepiness on the subjective experience of age. Study 1, a cross-sectional study of 429 participants (282 females (66%), 144 males, 3 other; age range 18-70) showed that for each additional day of insufficient sleep in the last 30 days, subjective age increased by 0.23 years. Study 2, an experimental crossover sleep restriction study (N = 186; 102 females (55%); 84 males; age range 18-46) showed that two nights of sleep restriction (4h in bed/night) made people feel 4.44 years older compared to sleep saturation (9h in bed/night). Additionally, moving from feeling extremely alert (KSS score of 1) to feeling extremely sleepy (KSS score of 9) was associated with feeling 10 years older in both studies. These findings provide compelling support for insufficient sleep and sleepiness to exert a substantial influence on how old we feel, and that safeguarding sleep is likely a key factor in feeling young.<strong> </strong></p>

Data from: A burning issue: Savanna fire management can generate enough carbon revenue to help restore Africa's rangelands and fill Protected Area funding gaps

<p>Many savanna-dependent species in Africa including large herbivores and apex predators are at increasing risk of extinction.&nbsp; Achieving effective management of protected areas (PAs) in Africa where lions live will cost an estimated USD &gt;$1-2 B/year in new funding. We explored the potential for fire management-based carbon-financing programs to fill this funding gap and benefit degrading savanna ecosystems. We demonstrated how introducing early dry season fire management programs could produce potential carbon revenues (PCR) from either a single carbon-financing method (avoided emissions) or from multiple sequestration methods ranging from USD $59.6-$655.9 M/year (at USD $5/ton) or USD $155.0 M&ndash;$1.7 B/year (at USD $13/ton).&nbsp; We highlighted variable but significant PCR for savanna PAs from USD $1.5&ndash;$44.4 M/year per PA. Convergence and divergence in global data protection law, BIICL

Significant new data protection legislation has recently been adopted in major economies - including China and the United States - filing gaps in their data privacy protections. Other countries, such as Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, have also been renovating existing data protection laws to make them fit for the digital age. These legislative initiatives have many common features. These include common concepts, principles, rights and duties, and common remedies and sanctions.</p> <p>Despite legal concepts and rules may appear similar, however, their implementation is different within different legal and political systems. Beyond differences in legal and policy contexts, new technological and economic pressures are also casting doubt on the resilience of data protection law. These developments have strained the capacities of data protection law&#39;s concepts and rules, which were designed in a different technological era.</p> <p>In seeking to protect the public from the potential harms of automated decision making and artificial intelligence, governments are beginning to look beyond data protection for novel regulatory solutions. In this panel event co-organised by BIICL and King&#39;s College London School of Law speakers discussed convergence and divergence in global data protection law.</p>

Data from: Occupancy winners in tropical protected forests: a pantropical analysis

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The structure of forest mammal communities appears surprisingly consistent across the continental tropics<span>, presumably due to convergent evolution in similar environments. W</span>hether such consistency extends to mammal occupancy, despite variation in species characteristics and context, remains unclear. Here we ask whether we can predict occupancy patterns and, if so, whether these relationships are consistent across biogeographic regions. Specifically, we assessed how mammal feeding guild, body mass and ecological specialization relate to occupancy in protected forests across the tropics. We used standardized camera-trap data (</span><span>1,002 camera-trap locations and 2-10 years of data)</span><span> and a hierarchical Bayesian occupancy model. We found that occupancy varied by regions, and </span><span>certain species characteristics</span><span> explained much of this variation. Herbivores consistently had the highest occupancy. However, only in the Neotropics did we detect a significant effect of body mass on occupancy: large mammals had lowest occupancy. Importantly, habitat specialists generally had higher occupancy than generalists, though this was reversed in the Indo-Malayan sites. We conclude that </span><span>habitat specialization is key for understanding variation in mammal occupancy across regions, and that habitat specialists often benefit more from protected areas, than do generalists. </span><span>The contrasting examples seen in the Indo-Malayan region likely reflect distinct anthropogenic pressures.</span></p>

Data and analysis code for: Global protected areas seem insufficient to safeguard half of the world's mammals from human-induced extinction

<div> <p class="normal">Protected areas (PAs) are a cornerstone of global conservation and central to international plans to minimize global extinctions. During the coming century, global ecosystem destruction and fragmentation associated with increased human population and economic activity could make the <span class="PI"></span>long-term<span class="PI"></span> survival of most terrestrial vertebrates even more dependent on PAs. However, the capacity of the current global PA network to sustain species for the long term is unknown. Here, we explore this question for all <span class="PI"></span>nonvolant terrestrial mammals<span class="ins cts-1"> for which we found sufficient data</span>, ∼4,000 species. We first estimate the potential population size of each such mammal species in each PA and then use three different criteria to estimate if solely the current global network of PAs might be sufficient for their <span class="PI"></span>long-term<span class="PI"></span> survival. Our analyses suggest that current PAs may fail to provide robust protection for about half the species analyzed, including most species currently listed as threatened with extinction and a third of species not currently listed as threatened. Hundreds of mammal species appear to have no viable protected populations. Underprotected species were found across all body sizes, taxonomic groups, and geographic regions. <span class="PI"></span>Large-bodied<span class="PI"></span> mammals, endemic species, and those in <span class="PI"></span>high-biodiversity<span class="PI"></span> tropical regions were particularly poorly protected by existing PAs. As<span class="ins cts-1"> new</span> international biodiversity targets are formulated, our results suggest that the global network of PAs must be <span class="PI"></span>greatly expanded and most importantly that PAs must be located in diverse regions that encompass species not currently protected and must be large enough to ensure that protected species can persist for the long term.</p> </div> <p class="kwd-group"></p>

Data from: Human impacts on mammals in and around a protected area before, during, and after COVID‐19 lockdowns

<p>The dual-mandate for many protected areas (PAs) to simultaneously promote recreation and conserve biodiversity may be hampered by negative effects of recreation on wildlife. However, reports of these effects are not consistent, presenting a knowledge gap that hinders evidence-based decision-making. We used camera traps to monitor human activity and terrestrial mammals in Golden Ears Provincial Park and the adjacent Malcolm Knapp Research Forest near Vancouver, Canada, with the objective of discerning relative effects of various forms of recreation on cougars (Puma concolor), black bears (Ursus americanus), black-tailed deer (Odocoileus hemionus), snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus), coyotes (Canis latrans), and bobcats (Lynx rufus). Additionally, public closures of the study area associated with the COVD-19 pandemic offered an unprecedented period of human-exclusion through which to explore these effects. Using Bayesian generalized mixed-effects models, we detected negative effects of hikers (mean posterior estimate = -0.58, 95% credible interval (CI) -1.09 to -0.12) on weekly bobcat habitat use and negative effects of motorized vehicles (estimate = -0.28, 95% CI -0.61 to -0.05) on weekly black bear habitat use. We also found increased cougar detection rates in the PA during the COVID-19 closure (estimate = 0.007, 95% CI 0.005 to 0.009), but decreased cougar detection rates (estimate = -0.006, 95% CI -0.009 to -0.003) and increased black-tailed deer detection rates (estimate = 0.014, 95% CI 0.002 to 0.026) upon reopening of the PA. Our results emphasize that effects of human activity on wildlife habitat use and movement may be species- and/or activity-dependent, and that camera traps can be an invaluable tool for monitoring both wildlife and human activity, collecting data even when public access is barred. Further, we encourage PA managers seeking to promote both biodiversity conservation and recreation to assess trade-offs between these two goals in their PAs.</p>

Data from: Protection status, human disturbance, snow cover and trapping drive density of a declining wolverine population in the Canadian Rocky Mountains

<p>Protected areas are important in species conservation, but high rates of human-caused mortality outside their borders and increasing popularity for recreation can negatively affect wildlife populations. We quantified wolverine (<em>Gulo gulo</em>) population trends from 2011 to 2020 in &gt;14 000 km2 protected and non-protected habitat in southwestern Canada. We conducted wolverine and multi-species surveys using non-invasive DNA and remote camera-based methods. We developed Bayesian integrated models combining spatial capture-recapture data of marked and unmarked individuals with occupancy data. Wolverine density and occupancy declined by 39 percent, with an annual population growth rate of 0.925. Density within protected areas was 3 times higher than outside and declined between 2011 (3.6 wolverines/1000 km2) and 2020 (2.1 wolverines/1000 km2). Wolverine density and detection probability increased with snow cover and decreased near development. Detection probability also decreased with human recreational activity. The annual harvest rate of 13% was above the maximum sustainable rate. We conclude that humans negatively affected the population through direct mortality, sub-lethal effects and habitat impacts. Our study exemplifies the need to monitor population trends for species at risk – within and between protected areas - as steep declines can occur unnoticed if key conservation concerns are not identified and addressed.</p>
