Enhancing the Durability and the Service Life of Asphalt Pavements through Innovative Light-Induced Self-Healing Materials
<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17BLSU02. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>"The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of a new generation of Ultraviolet (UV) light-induced self-healing polymers in enhancing the durability and self-healing properties of asphalt mixtures. Self-healing polymers were successfully synthesized in the laboratory and were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). In addition, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) results showed that the synthesized polymers achieved the required thermal stability to resist asphalt mixture production processes. Viscosity results showed that addition of 5% Recycled Asphalt Shingle (RAS) and/or 20% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) caused an increase in the viscosity of the binder blends. However, a reduction in viscosity of the binder blends containing recycled asphalt materials was observed when adding self-healing polymers. Semi-Circular Bending (SCB) test results showed that addition of recycled asphalt materials negatively affected the cracking performance of mixtures. However, incorporation of self-healing polymer (SHP) and 48h of UV light exposure improved the cracking resistance. This behavior was more evident with mixtures prepared with an unmodified binder. Loaded-Wheel Test (LWT) results showed that the addition of the self-healing polymer led to an increase in the rut depth of the samples prepared with an unmodified binder. However, the final rut depth was less than 6 mm, which is an acceptable rutting performance. Thermal-Stress Restrained Specimen Test (TSRST) results showed that addition of 5% RAS negatively affected the low-temperature cracking performance of the mix. In contrast, 5% SHP enhanced the low-temperature cracking performance of the mix by increasing the fracture load and decreasing the fracture temperature. For mixtures prepared with an unmodified binder, the optimum crack healing efficiency was observed for the mixtures containing 5% RAS and 5% self-healing polymer and exposed to 48h of UV light. Yet, self-healing polymer did not perform well in mixtures prepared with PG 70-22M polymer-modified binder. This may be due to the interaction between the polymer in the binder and the self-healing polymer."</p>
Data for: Evaluation of antibody kinetics and durability in health individuals vaccinated with inactivated COVID-19 vaccine (CoronaVac): a cross-sectional and cohort study in Zhejiang, China
<p><strong>Background</strong>: Although inactivated COVID-19 vaccines are proven to be safe and effective in the general population, the dynamic response and duration of antibodies after vaccination in the real world should be further assessed.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: We enrolled 1067 volunteers who had been vaccinated with one or two doses of CoronaVac in Zhejiang Province, China. Another 90 healthy adults without previous vaccinations were recruited and vaccinated with three doses of CoronaVac, 28 days and 6 months apart. Serum samples were collected from multiple timepoints and analyzed for specific IgM/IgG and neutralizing antibodies (NAbs) for immunogenicity evaluation. Antibody responses to the Delta and Omicron variants were measured by pseudovirus-based neutralization tests.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: Our results revealed that binding antibody IgM peaked 14–28 days after one dose of CoronaVac, while IgG and NAbs peaked approximately 1 month after the second dose and then declined slightly over time. Antibody responses had waned by month 6 after vaccination and became undetectable in the majority of individuals at 12 months. Levels of NAbs to live SARS-CoV-2 were correlated with anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and NAbs to pseudovirus, but not IgM. Homologous booster around 6 months after primary vaccination activated anamnestic immunity and raised NAbs 25.5-fold. The neutralized fraction subsequently rose to 36.0% for Delta (p=0.03) and 4.3% for Omicron (p=0.004), and the response rate for Omicron rose from 7.9% (7/89) to 17.8% (16/90).</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong>: Two doses of CoronaVac vaccine resulted in limited protection over a short duration. The inactivated vaccine booster can reverse the decrease of antibody levels to prime strain, but it does not elicit potent neutralization against Omicron; therefore, the optimization of booster procedures is vital.</p>

Increasing Bridge Durability and Service Life with LIDAR Enhanced Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS)
<p>Bridge construction inspections require quantitative measurements and location information. The conventional approach is visual inspection, which in general, is rather time-consuming, expensive due to traffic closure, subjective, and needs special access. Therefore an automated rebar layout detection algorithm was developed to quickly extract quantitative rebar layout information from the LiDAR data. This systematic method can automatically cluster the bridge elements from a 3D point cloud by using LiDAR-equipped UAS data collection and unsupervised machine learning techniques. A new automated inspection system using a LIDAR-equipped UAS can eventually if developed and tested be more reliable as well as less expensive. In the future, if it can be automatized, it can be implemented to simplify the complexity of inspections. The authors developed a platform to mount the camera, sonar laser, and DAQ on the UAS and remotely controlled the data collection operation. Additionally, an algorithm was developed which can automatically obtain the geometric information of the rebar. The proposed automated RGBD-equipped UAS system was developed, fabricated, and tested in the Balloon Fiesta Park on a simulated bridge deck at different heights and with different UAS motions to obtain the best distance, speed, and motion for real construction field. The authors also conducted an outdoor experiment in a construction field at White Rock to validate the capability of the proposed system on the real site with vertical rebar and the challenges of the real construction site. The result confirmed that the LIDAR-equipped UAS system has the potential to help the inspection process in terms of time, accuracy, safety, and generating a permanent record of the inspection. Bridge construction information collected by LiDAR-equipped UAS technology can eventually provide bridge managers with transparent condition assessment and one-step decision-making support through quantitative measurement combined with 3D visualization to facilitate repair planning that can greatly facilitate maintenance.</p>
