A complete energy community dataset with photovoltaic generation, battery energy storage systems and electric vehicles (v1.5)

<p>This dataset represents a complete European energy community based on actual data. In this scenario, a community of 250 households was built using real energy consumption and solar generation data obtained in homes throughout Europe. In total, 200 community members were assigned solar generation, while 150 were assigned a battery storage system. From the acquired sample, new profiles were created and randomly assigned to each end-user while also receiving two electric cars with information on their capacity, state-of-charge, and usage. Data from: Functional traits and environmental conditions predict community isotopic niches and energy pathways across spatial scales

1. Despite ongoing research in food web ecology and functional biogeography, the links between food-web structure, functional traits and environmental conditions across spatial scales remain poorly understood. Trophic niches, defined as the amount of energy and elemental space occupied by species and food webs, may help bridge this divide. 2. Here, we ask how the functional traits of species, the environmental conditions of habitats and the spatial scale of analysis jointly determine the characteristics of trophic niches. We used isotopic niches as a proxy of trophic niches, and conducted analyses at spatial scales ranging from local food webs and metacommunities to geographically distant sites. 3. We sampled aquatic macroinvertebrates from 104 tank bromeliads distributed across five sites from Central to South America, and compiled the macroinvertebrates' functional traits and stable isotope values (δ15N and δ13C). We assessed how isotopic niches within each bromeliad were influenced by the functional trait composition of their associated invertebrates and environmental conditions (i.e., habitat size, canopy cover, and detrital concentration). We then evaluated whether the diet of dominant predators and, consequently, energy pathways within food webs, reflected functional and environmental changes among bromeliads across sites. Finally, we determined the extent to which the isotopic niches of macroinvertebrates within each bromeliad contributed to the metacommunity isotopic niches within each site, and compared these metacommunity-level niches over biogeographic scales. 4. At the bromeliad level, isotopic niches increased with the functional richness of species in the food web and the detrital concentration in the bromeliad. The diet of top predators tracked shifts in prey biomass along gradients of canopy cover and detrital concentration. Bromeliads that grew under heterogeneous canopy cover displayed less trophic redundancy and therefore combined to form larger metacommunity isotopic niches. Finally, the size of metacommunity niches depended on within-site heterogeneity in canopy cover. 5. Our results suggest that the trophic niches occupied by food webs can predictably scale from local food webs to metacommunities to biogeographic regions. This scaling process is determined by both the functional traits of species and heterogeneity in environmental conditions.

Data from: Socio-economic impacts of energy access through off-grid systems in rural communities: A case study of South-West Nigeria

<p><span><span>The development of resilient energy systems is important for sustainable cities and communities. However, in countries with insufficient national energy supply, electricity distributors rarely consider remote communities due to their distant settlement, low electricity demand and poor payment capabilities. The United Nations has set a goal to deliver universal energy access by 2030, hence, it has become imperative to deploy clean and affordable off-grid mini-grid solutions to previously abandoned communities. Access to energy in rural communities is expected to result in unlocking their economic potentials. This paper investigates the impact of a solar hybrid mini-grid on the socio-economic growth of local entrepreneurs in Gbamu Gbamu village, Nigeria. A total of 83 Micro and Small Enterprises has been surveyed, descriptive statistics, paired-sample t-test, cross-tabulation, and Chi-square test, were used to assess the performance of businesses before and after electrification. The outcomes include the number of business enterprises created, employment statistics, energy expenses and income generated. Regression analysis was conducted on the relationship between the average income generated by businesses and independent socio-economic variables such as gender, marital status, household size, age, education level, years of business establishment, hours of operation, building tenure, capital source, number of employees, generator ownership and the days of operation. </span></span></p>

Integration of prosumer peer-to-peer trading decisions into energy community modelling

<p>Peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange of renewable energy is an attractive option to empower citizens to actively participate in the energy transition. Whereas previous research has assessed P2P communities primarily from a techno-economic perspective, little is yet known about prosumer preferences for solar power trading. Importantly, the impacts of community members&rsquo; trading decisions on key performance indicators such as individual electricity bills, community autarky, and grid stress remain unknown. Here, we assess P2P trading strategies of German homeowners based on an online experimental study. We simulate how various decision-making strategies impact the performance of P2P communities. The findings suggest that community autarky is slightly higher when prosumers are enabled to trade energy compared to when they merely aim to maximize their self-consumption. Our analysis moreover shows that P2P energy trading based on human decision-making may lead to financial benefits for prosumers and traditional consumers, and reduced stress for the grid.</p>
