Such feedback consists of suggested improvements or additions to data fields, for example a change in species identification or a newly determined georeference. The diagrams contrast two complementary mechanisms: (a) the original feedback loop (currently dominant); and (b) the emerging feedback pendulum (proposed for expansion). In a: (1) the user sends feedback to the provider (e.g., a given natural history museum); (2) if the provider makes a corresponding change to its database, the updated information is sent to the aggregator; and (3) that information becomes available for query by all users. In practice, because many providers do not consistently make such changes (denoted by an X), users do have access to updated information (dashed line). In b: (1) the user sends feedback to the aggregator; (2) the aggregator simultaneously both annotates the record (visible to all users) and sends the suggested information to the provider; (3) if the provider makes a corresponding change to its database, the updated information is sent to the aggregator; and (4) the aggregator makes the updated information available for query by all users. Data from: Using citizen science monitoring data in species distribution models to inform isotopic assignment of migratory connectivity in wetland birds
Stable isotopes have been used to estimate migratory connectivity in many species. Estimates are often greatly improved when coupled with species distribution models (SDMs), which temper estimates in relation to occurrence. SDMs can be constructed using from point locality data from a variety of sources including extensive monitoring data typically collected by citizen scientists. However, one potential issue with SDM is that these data oven have sampling bias. To avoid this potential bias, an approach using SDMs based on marsh bird monitoring program data collected by citizen scientists and other participants following protocols specifically designed to maximize detections of species of interest at locations representative of the species range. We then used the SDMs to refine isotopic assignments of breeding areas of autumn-migrating and wintering Sora (Porzana carolina), Virginia Rails (Rallus limicola), and Yellow Rails (Coturnicops noveboracensis) based on feathers collected from individuals caught at various locations in the United States from Minnesota south to Louisiana and South Carolina. Sora were assigned to an area that included much of the western U.S. and prairie Canada, covering parts of the Pacific, Central, and Mississippi Flyways. Yellow Rails were assigned to a broad area along Hudson and James Bay in northern Manitoba and Ontario, as well as smaller parts of Quebec, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan, including parts of the Mississippi and Atlantic Flyways. Virginia Rails were from several discrete areas, including parts of Colorado, New Mexico, the central valley of California, and southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba in the Pacific and Central Flyways. Our study demonstrates extensive data from organized citizen science monitoring programs are especially useful for improving isotopic assignments of migratory connectivity in birds, which can ultimately lead to better informed management decisions and conservation actions.

<p><strong>Is epistemological purism possible in Library and Information Science research?</strong></p><p>Several scholars in Knowledge Organization (KO) and in Library and Information Science (LIS) have expressed concern that the field seems driven primarily by practical applications and professional practices. Others have stressed the need for research in the field to be more theoretically motivated, lest it continue to be perceived not as a scientific field but simply as a set of techniques used to solve problems. Hence, there have been calls for scholars and practitioners to make explicit the epistemological assumptions underlying methods used to design information services and tools for their users as this can help identify inherent biases. </p><p>In answer to these calls, we examined the epistemological assumptions underlying methods deployed in some fields of KO and LIS – namely information retrieval and topic mapping. A careful examination of the underlying assumptions to these methods showed that they exhibited epistemological hybridity, in this case, a combination of empiricism and positivism with a dash of pragmatism and hermeneutics at the end. </p><p>We therefore hypothesize that it may not be a straightforward task for a researcher or an information professional to claim that a method borrows solely from positivism, rationalism, empiricism or social-constructivism or historicism or hermeneutics, simply because there is a gap between epistemological theories and methods linked to them. Also, a given piece of work may deploy methods linked to different epistemological theories.</p><p>Although our examples are taken from LIS and KO fields, we suspect that our observations may be generalized to other scientific disciplines and fields of inquiry.</p>

Data from: Measuring researchers' potential scholarly impact with structural variations: four types of researchers in information science (1979–2018)
We propose a method to measure the potential scholarly impact of researchers based on network structural variations they introduced to the underlying author co-citation network of their field. We applied the method to the information science field based on 91,978 papers published between 1979 and 2018 from the Web of Science. We divided the entire period into eight consecutive intervals and measured structural variation change rates (DM) of individual authors in corresponding author co-citation networks. Four types of researchers are identified in terms of temporal dynamics of their potential scholarly impact—1) Increasing, 2) Decreasing, 3) Sustained, and 4) Transient. The study contributes to the understanding of how researchers' scholarly impact might evolve in a broad context of the corresponding research community. Specifically, this study illustrated a crucial role played by structural variation metrics in measuring and explaining the potential scholarly impact of a researcher. This method based on the structural variation analysis offers a theoretical framework and a practical platform to analyze the potential scholarly impact of researchers and their specific contributions.
