Limno run codes, dates, and locations associated with vertical lake profile data collected in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1991-2025, ongoing)
This data package provides a summary of "limno runs" performed each season in lakes located throughout the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research program. Each limno run is identified by unique code that allows one to compile a complete set of limnological data from a particular lake and location at specific time points. There are usually two or three limno runs performed per lake per austral summer field season, although the number of runs may vary by lake and by season depending on site access, site conditions, and other external factors.
Underwater photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) vertical profiles collected from lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2025, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, lakes are monitored for photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) levels. This data set exemplifies the vertical profile of underwater PAR profiles in perennial ice covered lakes and ambient PAR measured at the air-ice interface. Profile data can be used to calculate extinction coefficients for the water column and ice layer.
Conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) vertical profiles collected from lakes in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2025, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a series of Taylor Valley lakes have been monitored for conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD). A Seabird instrument was used to record CTD profiles in these perennial ice covered lakes.
Lake Mendota Multiparameter Sonde Profiles: 2017 - current
Intermittent sensor profiling at the deep hole of Lake Mendota began in 2017 with a YSI EXO2 multiparameter sonde. Parameters include water temperature, pH, specific conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, phycocyanin, turbidity, and fDOM. Profiles are nominally 0 - 20 meters in depth in one meter increments, although the depth range and increments vary.
LakeBeD-US: Ecology Edition - a benchmark dataset of lake water quality time series and vertical profiles
LakeBeD-US: Ecology Edition is a harmonized lake water quality dataset containing time series and vertical profiles of 21 lakes in the United States monitored by long-term monitoring institutions. These institutions include the North Temperate Lakes Long-Term Ecological Research program (NTL-LTER), Niwot Ridge Long-Term Ecological Research program (NWT-LTER), National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), and the Carey Lab at Virginia Tech as part of the Virginia Reservoirs Long-Term Research in Environmental Biology (LTREB) site in collaboration with the Western Virginia Water Authority. The data include depth-discrete observations of 17 water quality variables including temperature, dissolved oxygen, chemical properties, Secchi depth, and more. Observations are divided into data collected by automated sensors at a relatively high temporal frequency and manually sampled data at a relatively low temporal frequency. All data were collected in situ. The data are available as Apache Parquet files, and the included R scripts give guidance on how to utilize and query the dataset in R. LakeBeD-US: Ecology Edition is an ecological science-oriented companion to LakeBeD-US: Computer Science Edition. The Computer Science Edition is available on the Hugging Face Hub.
Air/Snow temperature vertical profiles at different nodes of the 'Limnopolar Lake' CALM site, in Byers Península Livingston Island, Antarctica (2013-2022)
<div> <div> </div> </div> <div> <p>Air or seasonal snow temperature data were collected at different heights above the ground between 2013 and 2022 using an array of temperature micro-loggers (iButton models by Maxim) mounted on vertical wooden masts. These measurements were conducted at various nodes within the 100x100 m 'Limnopolar Lake' CALM site (A25) grid of the PERMATHERMAL network, managed by the University of Alcalá, Madrid, Spain, to monitor active layer thickness on Byers Peninsula, Livingston Island, South Shetland Islands, Antarctica.</p> <p>In 2013, nine arrays were installed at nodes with relative coordinates (00,00), (00,05), (00,10), (05,00), (05,05), (05,10), (10,00), (10,05), and (10,10). Measurements were taken at heights of 2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 40 cm above the ground surface using DS1921G iButton loggers, which recorded air/snow temperatures every 4 hours. This experiment, referred to as 'Mini', was active for only one year and is now discontinued.</p> <p>Between 2017 and 2022, three arrays were installed at nodes (00,00), (05,05), and (10,10). These arrays measured air/snow temperatures at heights of 2.5, 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 120, 140, and 160 cm above the ground surface using DS1922L iButton loggers, which recorded temperatures every 3 hours. This experiment, referred to as 'HR', has also been discontinued.</p> </div>

Mountain Lake Chemistry and Physics Profile Data since 2015 at Castle Lake
This data set contains long-term limnology data from Castle Lake (located 5440 ft above sea level in Northern California). The data contained can be broadly grouped into two different types: chemical and physical data. This data set contains dissolved oxygen saturation, dissolved oxygen concentration, chlorophyll-a concentration, CDOM, phycocyanin concentration, conductivity, specific conductivity, pH, salinity, water temperature, pressure, turbidity, sea pressure, density anomaly, and speed of sound at various depths. Sampling Frequency: Continuous measurements were made and recorded down to milliseconds. Sampling dates vary from year to year, starting as early as February and as late as November. This data collection is part of an ongoing project funded by the US National Science Foundation, private donors, US AID, and the University of Nevada's Global Water Center. This package was updated in February 2023 with data from 2021 and 2022. Dissolved O2 concentration data in the 2020 data file was updated to values in units of mg/L instead of umol/L and specific conductivity units in all files was revised to be in microSiemens per centimeter and not milliSiemens per centimeter.
Mirror Lake High-Frequency Dissolved Oxygen and Temperature Profiles
This lake metabolism data was collected by HOBO Temperature loggers and miniDOT loggers that were deployed at Mirror Lake Central Buoy over the deepest part of the lake (11m) on 2023-08-23. HOBO loggers were deployed vertically at depths 0.25m, 2m, and 4m, and miniDOT loggers were deployed vertically at depths 0.5m, 1m, and 6m. Sensors were tied to nylon climbing rope at these different depths and anchored to a buoy. Loggers were later removed on 2023-09-08. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Mono Lake, California water temperature depth profiles (0.5-m depth intervals) collected at multiple stations from 1991-2022 with conductivity-temperature-depth profilers.
Water temperature profiles collected at buoyed stations in Mono Lake with conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) profiles from 1991 to 2022. Data from 1991 to June 2012 collected and archived by Jellison & Melack (UCSB). Data from July 2012 to 2022 collected by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and are available in annual compliance reports submitted to the California State Water Resources Control Board.
Proprietary Sub Bottom Profiler Data for Lake Mendota
This study aims to create a three-dimensional sediment profile map of Lake Mendota, located in Dane County, WI, using subbottom profiling (SBP). Knowing the location, quantity, and relative composition of the sediments will give us lake-wide relative deposition rates and spatial differences in deposition, as well as what from the sediment phosphorus pool is available for recycling. Furthermore, knowing the significance of phosphorous sediment flux will aid in creating more accurate models, which can help in creating better policies that affect the lake such as land management practices.
Eight Mile Lake Research Watershed, Thaw Gradient: Growing season soil profile CO2 production at 10, 20, 30, and 40 cm, 2005-2007.
This dataset contains CO2 concentrations, diffusion coefficient, and soil CO2 fluxes at each depth interval and soil CO2 production at each replicate. The data were collected during the growing season as well as shoulder seasons.
Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Mirror Lake Thermal Profiles 1981 - 2011
Numerous studies have been conducted on Mirror Lake since the mid-1960s, including extensive physical, chemical, biological, and paleoecological research (Likens 1985). This data set includes thermal profiles consisting of temperatures measured at discrete depths. Measurements were made using a hand-held instrument from a boat at an anchored buoy station located at the deepest part (11 m at full pool) of Mirror Lake during the open water (ice-free) season. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Knowledge of the McMurdo Dry Valley (MDV) lakes is limited by winter access, a period which is most relevant in understanding the habitability of other icy worlds and critical to understanding the overall function of these lakes. Owing to the lack of winter access, data that normally require human presence are incomplete. Our goal was to conduct the first year-round investigation of the biogeophysics of these unique lakes. An important part of the McMurdo Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) is evaluating carbon and nitrogen budgets in perennial ice-covered lakes. This data set addresses this core area of research and quantifies the particulate carbon and nitrogen found at specific depths in McMurdo Dry Valley lakes.

Weekly CTD profile measurements of conductivity, specific conductance, temperature, depth, density, and salinity from Lake Hoare, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica during the 2012-2013 austral summer
As part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project, we investigated relationships between wind conditions and barotropic seiches within Lake Hoare, located in Taylor Valley, Antarctica, during the 2012-2013 austral summer. Temporal changes in the water column were measured using a rugged, handheld, CastAway CTD (conductivity-temperature-depth probe, manufactured by SonTek), deployed through the Lake Hoare Limno Hole (note, this is a separate instrument from the SeaBird CTD used as part of the MCM LTER core limnological monitoring program). The CastAway CTD directly measures temperature, electrical conductivity, and pressure at 5 Hz as it free-falls through the water column at a rate of approximately 1 m s-1 on the downward cast and approximately 0.3 m s-1 on the upward cast. The device calculates salinity and density using the International Equation of State for Seawater, called EOS-80. This data package provides 27 profiles of depth, temperature, conductivity, specific conductance, salinity, and density collected between November 25, 2012 and January 21, 2013. In general, three profiles were collected over a ten-minute-period every seven days for 57 days. Five profiles were collected prior to the arrival of spring melt, four profiles were collected during the arrival of spring melt on December 7, 2012, and 18 profiles were collected after the arrival of spring melt continuing into late summer.
