Local earthquake coda waveform from the Jammu And Kashmir Seismological NETwork (JAKSNET)
<p>This dataset contains local earthquake coda waveform and pre-signal noise waveforms from the Jammu And Kashmir Seismological NETwork (JAKSNET), a joint endeavor between the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata (IISER-K), Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVD) and the University of Cambridge, UK. The network was initiated in July 2013 and comprised 24 broadband seismograph systems deployed across the J&K Himalaya. A total of 696 vertical component coda waveforms, from 121 small-to-moderate local earthquakes of magnitude between 3.0 and 5.5, within the epicentral distance of 200 km are provided in this database. Pre-signal representative noise from 22 stations, which recorded these earthquakes, have been provided for computing signal-to-noise ratio for the coda signal. The waveform data is sampled at 100 samples per second (sps), are corrected for instrument response, and filtered in the frequency band of 0.02 to 30 Hz. Coda waveforms start from twice the S-wave arrival time and are of 90 s duration. This data has been used to compute the seismic coda-wave attenuation of the Jammu and Kashmir Himalaya. The manuscript is submitted for review in JGR Solid Earth and this dataset complements the manuscript. </p>

Dataset for: Indirect nitrous oxide emission factors of fluvial networks can be predicted by dissolved organic carbon and nitrate from local to global scales
<p>Streams and rivers are important sources of nitrous oxide (N<sub>2</sub>O), a powerful greenhouse gas. Estimating global riverine N<sub>2</sub>O emissions is critical for the assessment of anthropogenic N<sub>2</sub>O emission inventories. The indirect N<sub>2</sub>O emission factor (EF<sub>5r</sub>) model, one of the bottom-up approaches, adopts a fixed EF<sub>5r</sub> value to estimate riverine N<sub>2</sub>O emissions based on IPCC methodology. However, the estimates have considerable uncertainty due to the large spatiotemporal variations in EF<sub>5r</sub> values. Factors regulating EF<sub>5r</sub> are poorly understood at the global scale. Here, we combine 4-year in situ observations across rivers of different land use types in China, with a global meta-analysis over six continents, to explore the spatiotemporal variations and controls on EF<sub>5r</sub> values. Our results show that the EF<sub>5r</sub> values in China and other regions with high N loads are lower than those for regions with lower N loads. Although the global mean EF<sub>5r</sub> value is comparable to the IPCC default value, the global EF<sub>5r</sub> values are highly skewed with large variations, indicating that adopting region-specific EF<sub>5r</sub> values rather than revising the fixed default value is more appropriate for the estimation of regional and global riverine N<sub>2</sub>O emissions. The ratio of dissolved organic carbon to nitrate (DOC/NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>) and NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> concentration are identified as the dominant predictors of region-specific EF<sub>5r</sub> values at both regional and global scales because stoichiometry and nutrients strictly regulate denitrification and N<sub>2</sub>O production efficiency in rivers. A multiple linear regression model using DOC/NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> and NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup> is proposed to predict region-specific EF<sub>5r</sub> values. The good fit of the model associated with easily obtained water quality variables allows its widespread application. This study fills a key knowledge gap in predicting region-specific EF<sub>5r</sub> values at the global scale and provides a pathway to estimate global riverine N<sub>2</sub>O emissions more accurately based on IPCC methodology.</p> <p>This dataset is a global integrated N<sub>2</sub>O dataset including data from 4-year (2017-2020) in situ measurements of six large rivers in China, 3-year (2018-2020) in situ measurements of urban river networks in Beijing of China, and 825 measurements from 70 published papers over six continents. The data includes dissolved N<sub>2</sub>O concentration, biogeochemical (DOC, NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>, NH<sub>4</sub><sup>+</sup>, temperature, and DO), climatological (climate zones), and geographic (region, location, and land cover) information.</p>
Plant–hummingbird pollination networks exhibit limited rewiring after experimental removal of a locally abundant plant species
<p>In this study, we simulated the local extinction of a hummingbird-pollinated understory plant, <em>Heliconia</em> <em>tortuosa</em>, from tropical forest fragments using a replicated Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) experimental design while quantifying plant-hummingbird interactions through two parallel techniques: pollen collected from individual hummingbirds ('pollen networks', created from >300 pollen samples) and observations of hummingbirds visiting focal plants ('camera networks', created from >19,000 observation hours). Each response variable was measured during each experimental period (pre and post) in sites with and without <em>H. tortuosa</em> removal (treatment and control).</p>

In this paper, we are interested in the representation of multi-objective landscapes and their multi-modality. More specifically, we revise and extend the network of Pareto local optimal solutions (PLOS-net), inspired by the well-established local optima network from single-objective optimization. We first define a compressed PLOS-net which allows us to enhance its perception while preserving the important notion of connectedness between local optima. We then study an alternative visualization of the (compressed) PLOS-net that focuses on good-quality solutions, improves the distinction between connected components in the network, and generalizes well to landscapes with more than 2 objectives. We finally define a number of network metrics that characterize the PLOS-net, some of them being strongly correlated with search performance. We visualize and experiment with small-size multi-objective nk-landscapes, and we disclose the effect of PLOS-net metrics against well-established multi-objective local search and evolutionary algorithms.</p>

Spatial variation in early-winter snow cover determines local dynamics in a network of alpine butterfly populations
<p>Snow cover is an extremely variable but critical component of alpine environments. We use long term population data on multiple small populations of the alpine butterfly <i>Parnassius smintheus</i>, combined with high-resolution satellite imagery of meadows, to show a strong link between fine-scale spatial and temporal variation in early-winter snow cover and annual change in butterfly population size, accounting for up to 80 percent of the variation in annual population change. Snow cover in early winter for each meadow is the best predictor of annual adult population change, despite being estimated for a relatively short time-window in late November. We identify a means by which subpopulation response to a local, short-term weather variable can be assessed over a large spatial extent, but also at a resolution relevant to the biology and local dynamics of this alpine species.</p>
