Monitoring data for railway bridge KW51 in Leuven, Belgium, before, during, and after retrofitting
<p>This data set is obtained from a monitoring campaign of 15 months on a steel bowstring railway bridge in Leuven, Belgium. In this period, the connections of the diagonals to the bridge deck and the arches were strengthened after the observation of damage. The monitoring consists of measurements of acceleration on the bridge deck and the arches, strain on the bridge deck and the diagonals connecting the bridge deck with the arches, strain on the rails, displacement at the bearings, and temperature and relative humidity. Data is provided for two train passages and six periods of ambient vibration per day. In addition, the evolution of the identified modal characteristics over time is added. The data set is well-suited for the validation of vibration-based structural health monitoring methods, as it includes data for different states of the structure, i.e. before, during, and after the retrofitting. </p>
Cost-Effective Methods to Retrofit Metal Culverts Using Composites
<p>One of the current pressing problems for all DOTs is the corrosion-oriented deterioration of existing metal culverts. These metal culverts typically are designed for a life of 50 years. However, corrosion is making them last no longer than 30 years. A Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) pipe section has been evaluated as a fit-in GFRP profile liner for complete repair and rehabilitation of the corroded metal culvert with an expected life of 75 years. This is mainly because of the corrosion free nature of the GFRP material. A comprehensive rehabilitation methodology and laboratory scale three-point bending test was conducted to test the composite action of the steel-GFRP section. A finite element model was developed to provide inference on the mechanics of the GFRP-CMP section and the effect of corrosion on the mechanics of the retrofitted pipe. The FE model was verified with experimental observations and will be used to design GFRP section for retrofitting an existing culvert in the field. A Life Cycle Cost Analysis model was developed to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the proposed retrofitting technique and compare it with other existing technologies.</p>

NLCD 1992/2001 Retrofit Land Cover Change Product
Developments in mapping methodology, new sources of input data, and changes in the mapping legend for the 2001 National Land Cover Database (NLCD2001) will confound any direct comparison between NLCD2001 and National Land Cover Dataset 1992 (NLCD1992). Users are cautioned that direct comparison of these two independently created land cover products is not recommended. This NLCD 1992/2001 Retrofit Land Cover Change Product was developed to offer users more accurate direct change analysis between the two products. The NLCD 1992/2001 Retrofit Land Cover Change Product uses a specially developed methodology to provide land cover change information at the Anderson Level I classification scale (Anderson et al., 1976*), relying on decision tree classification of Landsat satellite imagery from circa 1992 and 2001. Unchanged pixels between the two dates are coded with the NLCD01 Anderson Level I class code, while changed pixels are labeled with a "from-to" land cover change value. Additional details about this product are available in the metadata included in the multi-zone downloadable zip file. This product is designed for regional application only and is not recommended for local scales.
