Household surveys in four informal settlements in Abidjan (Côte d'Ivoire) and Nairobi (Kenya)
<p><strong>Description:</strong> Latest release of data (anonymized) collected in informal settlements in Côte d'Ivoire and Kenya during my PhD thesis, with the respective metadata (questionnaire files). Settlement Trees, Illinois Level 0, 1804-1849
We provide a Level 0 record of trees in Illinois transcribed from Public Land Surveys conducted by surveyors from the General Land Office of the United States in the 1800s. Posts were set every half mile in townships that were typically 6 miles by 6 miles square. Surveyors recorded details about the one to four trees closest (but typically recorded information for the two closest trees) to the posts and included information about the tree name (taxonomic specificity ranged by surveyor), tree diameter (inches), and distance and bearing from the post. Our records include the tree information and the location of the posts from which the tree information came from. For the msb-paleon.28.0 package, these Level 0 tree data were aggregated to the 8km grid resolution Level 1 product (see msb-paleon.26 package). That product was then statistically smoothed using a statistical model that accounts for zero-inflated continuous data with smoothing based on generalized additive modeling techniques and approximate Bayesian uncertainty estimates for the Level 2 products estimating aboveground biomass (msb-paleon.23), density (msb-paleon.24), and basal area (msb-paleon.25). Estonian Stone Age settlement sites: a dataset
<p>This dataset includes the list of Stone Age settlement sites in the territory of Estonia. The list was compiled from published sources, grey literature and existing database records for unpublished sites. The current revision (version 1) of the dataset includes sites from recent systematic surveys conducted until 2017 (with some exceptional sites found later). Only sites with known exact locations were included into the dataset.</p> <p>The sites are classified into four stages of the Stone Age: pre-pottery Mesolithic (9000–5200 cal. BC), Narva (5200–3900 cal. BC), Comb Ware (3900–1800 cal. BC) and Corded Ware (2800–2000 cal. BC). The classification is based on typo-chronology of find materials, also using existing radiocarbon and other dating methods, if possible. The number of sites is 410, with 244 pre-pottery Mesolithic sites, 39 sites with Narva pottery, 60 sites with Comb Ware and 67 sites with Corded Ware. As there is a row dedicated to every habitation period in a location the number of unique site locations is smaller.</p>
Survey of open data and information seeking in Kenya's Urban Slums and Rural Settlements
<p>This dataset provides survey responses from 240 people surveyed as part of the "Investigating the Impact of Kenya’s Open Data Initiative on Marginalized Communities: Case Study of Urban Slums and Rural Settlements" project.</p> <p>The data, collected in mid-2013 looks at issues of where citizens look for data, and how successful they have been in getting government information from different sources, as well as their awareness of the Kenya open data portal, and their interest in getting information through different digital channels in future.</p> <p>Descriptive statistics have been analysed in the publication "Open Government Data for Effective Public Participation: Findings of a Case Study Research Investigating The Kenya's Open Data Initiative in Urban Slums and Rural Settlements", but no further analysis has yet been carried out.</p> <p><strong>Data descriptions</strong></p> <p>The Codebook.csv file lists variable names and the questions asked to elicit each response.</p> <p>JHC-Data.csv contains the results from the questionnaires collected through structured in-person interview in the three locations. The questionnaires were administered at chiefs centres, community resource centres, constituency development fund office and religious centres). Neolithic Settlements in Central Europe: Data from the Project 'Lifestyle as an Unintentional Identity in the Neolithic'
<p>This repository contains data set submitted to <strong>Journal of Open Archaeology Data</strong>. The data set originated in course of the Czech Science Foundation project n. 19-16304S entitled <strong>Lifestyle as an unintentional identity in the Neolithic</strong>.</p> <p>The data set comprises of over 2100 Neolithic settlement sites from Central Europe (mainly Czech Republic with small parts of Slovakia and Austria). Each site is is defined by spatial coordinates and information about relative chronology phase. The time span is 4900 BCE to 3300 BCE.</p> <p>The data set consists of the following files:</p> <ul> <li> <p><strong>sites.csv</strong> – is a main list of sites with unique identifiers in the id field, id starting with B means the site is from the eastern part of the Bohemia section of the study area and in case of id starting with M the site is from the Morava river catchment. Data from: Three decades of pastoralist settlement dynamics in the Ethiopian Omo Delta based on remote sensing data
<p>Data from the paper:</p> <p><em>Amos, S., Mengistu, S., Kleinschroth, F. (2021): Three decades of pastoralist settlement dynamics in the Ethiopian Omo Delta based on remote sensing.</em></p> <p>Based on Landsat 5, 7, 8, RapidEye Ortho, and Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, we manually mapped the settlements of the Dasanech people in the most populated parts of the Omo River Delta in Ethiopia from 1992 to 2019 using QGIS. We used the data to answer the following questions: (1) How have pastoralist settlements in the delta changed in extent and persistence over the past three decades? And (2) how have the settlements changed structurally during the construction, filling, and operation of Gibe III Dam?</p> <p>We conducted two independent remote sensing analyses. Firstly, we used Landsat data from 1992 to 2019 to track land that is inhabited by pastoralists people within the evergreen part of the Delta. Secondly, the higher spatial resolution of the RapidEye Ortho (5m) and Sentinel-2 (10m) images allowed the detailed identification of settlements as well as infrastructure (tin-roof houses and road) in the Delta during a shorter period from 2009 to 2019. <strong>For more information on the data, please refer to the README.txt or the paper.</strong></p>

<p>Archaeological data used for the paper Exploring Economic Integration of Peasant Settlements in Roman Central Spain (1st - 3rd c. AD). The supplement is composed by three CSV files recording respectively the presence and frequency of an artefact chrono-type at a site, the adjacency matrix (MATRIX_SITE-CHRONOTYPE_CARPETANIA.csv), the attribute information per site (ATTRIB_SITES_CARPETANIA.csv) and the attribute information per artefact chrono-type (ATTRIB_CHRONOTYPES_CARPETANIA.csv). Also included are the raw .graphmlz files relating to the analyses carried out which include, among other data, the Louvain modularity. <br> In order to view and analyse the .graphmlz files provided in this archive, you can use the Visone software, a tool for visualizing and analyzing networks: To view these .graphmlz files, first download and install Visone software from their official website (<a href="https://visone.ethz.ch/">https://visone.ethz.ch/</a>). Bioerosion on Fungia pieces and coral recruits, calcification and settlement data on Palmyra Atoll reef.
Coral recruitment and calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) accretion are fundamental processes that help maintain coral reefs. Many reefs worldwide have experienced degradation, including a decrease in coral cover and biodiversity. Successful coral recruitment helps degraded reefs to recover, while CaCO₃ accretion by early successional benthic organisms maintains the topographic complexity of a coral reef system. It is therefore important to understand the processes that affect coral recruitment and CaCO₃ accretion rates in order to understand how coral reefs recover from disturbances. The aim of this thesis was to determine how biophysical forcing factors affect coral recruitment, calcification and bioerosion on a pristine coral reef.
MCR LTER: Genetics: Settlement dynamics in the three-spot damselfish, Dascyllus trimaculatus
These data describe the genetics of recruiting Dascyllus trimaculatus. We first placed two rows of 8 anemones in a region (the west side of the bay of Opunohu) previously devoid of anemones. Anemones are 10 meters apart, the two rows are 100 meters apart. The row close to the reef crest is called crest , or OUT, row, the row away from the crest and close to the boat channel is called channel, or IN, row. The project started with the placement of the anemones in the fall of 2000. Since then, we regularly clear the anemones of Dascyllus and then collect newly settled fishes every morning. These fishes are later typed by sequencing the mitochondrial control region. Fishes are labeled as follows: DTR IN 01010205. This is a Dascyllus Trimaculatus collected on the channel row, first anemone, on January 2nd 2005. Anemones are numbered 1 to 8, from west to east. These data are published in Bernardi, G., R. MCR LTER: Genetics: Settlement dynamics in the clownfish, Amphiprion chrysopterus
These data describe the genetics of recruiting Amphiprion chrysopterus. Our goal is to score every single clownfish from the island of Moorea (we believe that the total population in Moorea is of approximately 300-500 individuals). Individuals are characterized using microsatellites, thus the data are presented as a matrix of alleles corresponding to a set of microsatellite loci. Ultimately, we want to determine the level of self-recruitment in Moorea by estimating the number of offspring which recruit on Moorea and that are derived from Moorea parents. The next frontier: Human settlements in the marine environment
<p>Human settlements have impacted most terrestrial environments on Earth. With a rapidly growing global population, surging demands for resources, and unprecedented alteration to Earth's ecosystems, the conservation of our only suitable habitat is a contemporary zeitgeist. Moreover, humanity's nature for enterprise and exploitation continuously pushes the frontiers of exploration, while the governance associated with expansion beyond terra firma is uncertain and rife with conflict. Though the notion of human expansion into the oceans is becoming more orthodox, we have largely overlooked Earth's oceans as space for human habitat. Here, we build on the case for humanity's future over the marine environment and discuss how exploring this frontier will result in advances for industries, economies, and exploration. The "Blue Acceleration" could transform the nascent phenomenon of marine cities into reality, and we support this notions with a global marine spatial plan to assess the suitability of marine settlements. Our analysis shows that every oceanic basin supports regions for sustainable human settlements. More broadly, we discuss the implications of a human-marine frontier and the benefits that will ensue for science, humanity and our planet. Finally, we argue that the human-marine frontier should be an immediate steppingstone for future exploration, innovation and discovery.</p>
