Historical snowfall precipitation data in the Apennine Mountains, Italy
<p>This database includes a large collection of quality-controlled and homogenized historical snow records measured in the 1951-2001 period in the Central and Southern Apennine Mountains (Italy). Such data have been manually digitized from the Hydrological Yearbooks of the Italian National Hydrological and Mareographic Service (hereafter, NHMS), the institution that managed the hydro-meteorological data collection in Italy from 1917 to 2002. More specifically, the rescued dataset includes the monthly observations of three different variables:</p> <p>· The snow cover duration (SCD), which is defined as total number of days in a given month with snow depth on the ground >=1 cm. This variable is available for 110 stations between 288 and 1430 m above the sea level (ASL).</p> <p>· The number of days with snowfall (NDS), which is total number of days in a given month on which the accumulated snowfall (i.e. the amount of fresh snow with respect to the previous observations) is at least 1 cm. This variable is available for 114 stations between 288 and 1430 m ASL.</p> <p>· The height of new snow (HN), which is defined as the monthly amount of fresh snow (expressed in cm). The monthly value is intended as the sum of daily HN data observed in a determined month. This variable is available for 120 stations between 288 and 1750 m ASL.</p> <p>Note that for HN variable, the data availability is restricted to the period 1971-2001.</p> <p>The considered dataset has been subjected to an accurate quality control consisting of several statistical tests: the gross error test, which flags the data that are above or below acceptable physical limits, the consistency test, which involves an inter-variable check, and the tolerance test, which is focused on the outlier detection. In addition, the homogeneity of the rescued time series has been checked using Climatol method (Guijarro, 2018). The latter is based on the Standard Normal Homogeneity Test (Alexandersson, 1986) for the identification of the breaks and on a linear regression approach for the adjustments (Easterling and Peterson, 1995). Climatol has been also employed for the filling of missing values.</p> <p>The database is structured into three different folders (one for each variable). In a determined folder, the user finds two files, one containing the main information regarding the available stations (code, station name, latitude and longitude (in decimal degrees) and altitude ASL (in m)), the other one the monthly time series for the considered variable.</p> <p>Note that the original data sources of this database, the Hydrological Yearbooks of the NHMS, are freely accessible in printed version (i.e. as scanned images in portable document format) through the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) website (http://www.bio.isprambiente.it/annalipdf).</p> <p>Additional information about the data rescue processing can be found in the preprint “Historical snowfall measurements in the Central and Southern Apennine Mountains: climatology, variability and trend”, open for discussion in The Cryosphere journal (https://doi.org/10.5194/egusphere-2024-1056).</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>References</strong></p> <p>Alexandersson, H.: A homogeneity test applied to precipitation data, J. <p>Observational dataset of snowfall events in 20160121 and 20180104 by polarimetric radar and 2-dimensional vedio disdrometer used for the Manuscript: "Potential of Snowfall Nowcasting Using Polarimetric Radar Data and Its Link to Ice Microphysics: Study of Two Snowstorms in East China". QVP.zip represents the quasi-vertical profiles composited from NUIST CPOL at the 19.5-degree elevation. VAD.zip is the velocity azimuth displays (VADs) estimated from radar volume scans, using the method by Matejka and Srivastava (1991). Traj_ele_1p5.zip is the reflectivity factor at the trajectory final location estimated by VAD winds at the 1.5-degree elevation. Snow_data.zip is the observations of snow particles by NJU 2DVD. The files that end with .pkl can be read by python joblib module. The files that end with .nc are in Netcdf format.</p>

Experiments on the snowfall, temperature, and humidity to the Arctic summer snowstorm using ocean-ice couple model (POP2-CICE5) with JRA55-do and MERRA2 forcing
<p><span>In the Arctic, short-lived summer snowstorms can provide snow cover that can increase surface reflectivity and heat capacity. Despite their potential importance, little research has been done to understand the impact of summer snowstorms on basin-scale Arctic sea ice cover. Our observational analysis shows that a summer snowstorm event is accompanied by cyclonic ice drift, increases in surface albedo and surface air cooling that can persist for up to ~2 weeks, dampening sea ice loss. Specifically, multiple snowstorm events in a summer, on average, results in net increase in sea ice extent of ~0.2×106 km<sup>2</sup> by early September. Experiments with a sophisticated ice-ocean model framework indicate that the initial expansion of sea ice extent is driven by cyclonic wind-driven ice drifts driving sea ice southwards and increasing albedo around the summer ice edge, however the thermal effects from the associated snowfall and atmospheric conditions result in a stronger overall impact on basin-averaged sea ice extent at seasonal scales.</span></p> <p><span>Additional model experiments were carried out to isolate the physical processes contributing to the thermal response of Arctic sea ice to summer snowstorms. Our results show the impact of surface air cooling on sea ice extent is about 3.5 times larger than the snowfall/albedo response. However, our simulated albedo response is weaker than the observed response, likely due to the negligible difference in surface albedo between old snow and freshly fallen snow – a limiting factor in our analysis and a topic worthy of future focus.</span></p>

Western Italian Alps Monthly Snowfall and Snow Cover Duration, Version 1
This data set consists of snow observations for 18 stations in the western Italian Alps. Two types of data are included: monthly snowfall amounts and monthly snow cover duration in days. The period of record varies with each station, with the longest station record including data from 1877 to 1996. The average station record duration is approximately 61 years. Available stations range from 565 meters to 2720 meters in elevation. The data are summaries of snow stake measurements. Daily observations of total snow depth were generally made at 8 a.m. local time. Data were aquired using a snow measuring rod. Snowfall amount was defined as being any increase over the previous day's reading. This measurement may be an underestimate of as much as 10-20% due to snow pack settlement. However, this underestimation is fairly consistent for all measurements. The daily data were then totaled to yield the monthly values.
Snowfall and Snow Depth for Canada 1943-1982, Version 1
Data include monthly snowfall and end-of-month snow depth for 140 stations across Canada. Stations that maintained at least 20 years of data were chosen. The original data are from Atmospheric Environment Service Canadian Climate Centre and from NOAA's National Climatic Data Center. Data are divided into eight files by region or province: British Columbia (17 stations), Yukon and Northwest Territories (33 stations), Alberta (12 stations), Saskatchewan (115 stations), Manitoba (10 stations), Ontario (19 stations), Quebec (20 stations) and Atlantic Provinces (14 stations). Each data record contains a variable indicator to identify data as snow on the ground on the last day of the month (centimeters) or total snowfall for the month (millimeters). A list of stations, with latitude and longitude to hundredths of a degree, is included in documentation for this data set.
