Stigma shape shifting in sages (Salvia: Lamiaceae) – hummingbirds guided the evolution of New World floral features
<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>A fundamental question in evolutionary biology is how clades of organisms exert influence on one another. The evolution of the flower and subsequent plant/pollinator coevolution are major innovations that have operated in flowering plants to promote species radiations at a variety of taxonomic levels in the Neotropics. Here we test the hypothesis that pollination by Neotropical endemic hummingbirds drove the evolution of two unique stigma traits in correlation with other floral traits in New World Salvia (Lamiaceae). We examined morphometric shapes of stigma lobing across 400 Salvia spp., scored presence and absence of a stigma brush across Salvia, and used a suite of phylogenetic comparative methods to detect shape regime shifts, correlation of trait shifts with BayesTraits and phylogenetic generalized least square regressions, and the influence of scored pollinators on trait evolution using OUwie. We found that a major Neotropical clade of Salvia evolved a correlated set of stigma features, with a longer upper stigma lobe and stigmatic brush, following an early shift to hummingbird pollination. Evolutionary constraint is evident as subsequent shifts to bee pollination largely retained these two features. Our results support the hypothesis that hummingbirds guided the correlative shifts in corolla, anther connective, style and stigma shape in Neotropical Salvia, despite repeated shifts back to bee pollination. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Weak response to selection on stigma-anther distance in a primarily selfing population of yellow monkeyflower
<p>Stebbins hypothesized that selfing lineages are evolutionary dead ends because they lack adaptive potential. While selfing populations often harbor limited nucleotide variability compared to closely related outcrossers, reductions in the genetic variability of quantitative characters remain unclear, especially for key traits determining selfing rates. Yellow monkeyflower (<em>Mimulus guttatus</em>) populations generally outcross and maintain extensive quantitative genetic variation in floral traits. Here, we study the Joy Road population (Bodega Bay, California, USA) of <em>M. guttatus</em>, where individuals exhibit stigma-anther distances typical of primarily selfing monkeyflowers. We show that this population is closely related to nearby conspecifics on the Pacific coast with a modest 33% reduction in genome-wide variation compared to a more highly outcrossing population. A five-generation artificial selection experiment challenged the hypothesis that the Joy Road population harbors comparatively low evolutionary potential in the stigma-anther distance, a critical determinant of selfing rate in <em>Mimulus</em>. Artificial selection generated a weak phenotypic response, with low realized heritabilities (0.020-0.028) falling 84% below those measured for floral characters in more highly outcrossing <em>M. guttatus</em>. These results demonstrate substantial declines in evolutionary potential with a transition toward selfing. Whether these findings explain infrequent reversals to outcrossing or general limits on adaptation in selfers requires further investigation.</p>

Transgender Stigma - Evaluation of Online Course
<p><span>The course was offered free of charge on Coursera and contained 19 teaching videos (3-7 minutes each), intermittent practice quizzes, and discussion prompts. Employing <span>real voice recordings of transgender children and their caregivers, the videos were designed to elicit empathy and transmit knowledge. </span>Most videos were animated and used a narrative format. 447 participants distributed around the globe completed a survey both prior to and after finishing the course. The survey contained five questions that captured subjects’ levels of transgender stigma. Results of the pre- and post-surveys were then compared.</span></p> <p><span>Location and identification number are removed.</span></p>
