The auditory sound tracks (bass drum) and visual stimuli (point-light displays of biological motions) each cover the tempo range from 60 to 180BPM, 15BPM per step. Coupling of the stimuli from both modalities results in 81 stimuli in total.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Genetic diversity in tempo determines foraging range in ants

<p>The foraging behavior of a colony arises from the activity of individual workers.  In this paper we explore the phenotypic differences among the workers of the western harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex occidentalis in order to understand the temporal pattern of foraging in colonies.  We know that the genetic diversity of colonies influences the temporal pattern of foraging: with greater genetic diversity colonies begin foraging earlier and forage for greater duration.  </p> <p>We test two mechanisms to account for this pattern.  The Temperature Hypothesis predicts that early foragers will be more active at lower temperatures than late foragers and will be the first workers to initiate foraging.  Late foragers will be more active at high temperatures.  The Tempo Hypothesis predicts that early foragers will be the first to forage because they have the higher overall tempo of activity at all temperatures.  </p> <p>We measure the movement activity of samples of early and late foragers from 32 colonies over a range of temperatures from 9-37̊C.  We find that early workers are more active at all temperatures than late workers, supporting the Tempo Hypothesis.  Early and late foragers tend to belong to different patrilines, suggesting that there is a genetic basis for the difference in the tempo of behavior.  We also find that colonies that have greater number of patrilines, due to greater mating frequency by the queen, have a greater range temporal range of foraging.  </p>

Tempo-spatial evolution of seed plant endemism in Taiwan island

<p><strong>Aim</strong>: In Taiwan island, dispersal through <em>recent</em> <em>land-bridge</em> and <em>oversea</em> after the appearance of proto-Taiwan (&lt;6.5 Ma) is responsible for its biodiversity assembly. While radiations have also been widely reported in mountain systems. So, the tempo-spatial route to the floral hotspot was determined through a meta-analysis of evolution of endemic plants.</p> <p><strong>Location</strong>: Taiwan island and adjacent Asian regions.</p> <p><strong>Taxon</strong>: Seed plants.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong>: Published dated phylogenies were compiled, and the stem ages were considered as origin times. Ancestral range shift pattern and/or distribution of sister lineage/species were used to determine the speciation mode, in situ origin or dispersal. The distributions of sister taxa were assigned to ten different biogeographical regions. Histograms quantifying the number of different origin mode events within 0.5 Ma bins were constructed. Possibility of long-distance dispersal (LDD) was evaluated.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong>: The 125 sampled endemic plants originated between the late Eocene and late Pleistocene, with 111 species (88.8%) originating after the emergence of proto-Taiwan and 14 species (11.2%) before. Spatially, in situ speciation contributed more to the formation of endemism than dispersal (56.8% vs 43.2%). The mean ages of in situ origin species (1.83 Ma) are significantly younger than that of dispersal (6.34 Ma). The main regions from which dispersal occurred were south-central (n=29) and southeast China (n=28) (referred to as south China), followed by Japan (n=14). High ratio (60.8%) of LDD ability is found.</p> <p><strong>Main</strong> <strong>conclusions</strong>: Spatially, <em>recent land-bridge</em> and <em>oversea</em> dispersal from the adjacent flora of Asia is supported and southwest and southeast China are the most important sources. In situ speciation that may be correlated with mountain uplift, monsoon intensification and Pleistocene climatic fluctuations exert greater contributions. Temporally, floral endemism is predominantly origin after the emergence of proto-Taiwan. Additional investigations with more sophisticated sampling and genetic data are needed in the future.</p>

Effects of rhythm and accent patterns on tempo-keeping property of finger tapping

<p><span>Tempo of music performance is often accelerated irrespective of players' intention. Though the characteristics of the tempo deviation phenomenon have been investigated using a finger-tapping task, most such studies dealt with tapping with a fixed interval; few studies considered the effects of rhythm and accent, both important factors of music performance. Here, we asked how different rhythm and accent patterns affected the tempo-keeping property using a synchronization-continuation task paradigm: Participants were asked to keep tapping while reproducing the given rhythm/accent patterns designated by the target tones. Tapping tempo was significantly deviated depending on rhythm/accent patterns, but their magnitudes were only several percent in 150 seconds, much smaller than those in real music performance. We also ran experiments under the conditions that participants need to reproduce the accent patterns, but only feedback tones were modulated. These auditory modulations affected the tempo deviation, implying that not only motor process for producing the accents but also perceptual process induced by the accented auditory feedback influence the tempo maintenance of finger tapping. In sum, the present finding shows that sensorimotor processing for un-uniform finger tapping can disturb the long-term tempo-keeping process. We also discussed related topics based on the experimental findings.</span></p>
