Stream specific conductance and temperature from small watersheds in the Andrews Forest

Stream specific conductance and water temperature are measured instantaneously every 5 minutes at most of the gauged watersheds within the H.J. Andrews Experimental Forest (Watersheds 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 10 and Mack Creek). Data is complementary to stream chemistry measurements from a proportional sampler (CF002) and long-term streamflow measurements (HF004) made at each of these watersheds.

Air temperature at core phenology sites and additional bird monitoring sites in the Andrews Experimental Forest, 2009 to present

The H.J Andrews phenology study air temperature network includes 16 core phenology sites, 40 core bird sites and 128 auxiliary bird sites. This study examines air temperatures at multiple sites within the Andrews Experimental Forest. Air temperatures were recorded 1.5 m above ground at 184 sites distributed on an 800-m incomplete grid throughout much of the Andrews Forest. Data were collected using automated sensors starting in June of 2009 at 56 sites and in June 2011 128 additional sensors were added. These data document the complex spatial and temporal patterns of air temperature variation within the Andrews Forest, which is governed by multiple processes including inversions, regional air mixing, cold air drainage and pooling, and the effects of vegetation on temperature extremes. The data entities provided indicate various methods of data quality checking over time.

Circulation dynamics: currents, waves, temperature measurements from moorings in lagoon sites along the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast, 2018-ongoing

Starting August 2018, five moorings deployed on the seafloor of multiple lagoons in the Beaufort Sea will record currents, waves, temperature, and pressure. Moorings are retrieved and re-deployed each August. This data is being collected to better understand the multi-seasonal circulation dynamics between the Beaufort Sea and coastal lagoons. Two moorings are deployed in Elson Lagoon, one in Stefansson Sound, one in Jago Lagoon, and one in Kaktovik Lagoon. Each mooring contains two data loggers: RBRduo3 T.D wave loggers and Lowell Instruments LLC TCM-1 tilt current meters. The RBR instruments measure temperature, pressure, and derived wave energy, average wave period, average wave height, maximum wave period, maximum wave height, 1/10 wave period, 1/10 wave height, significant wave period, significant wave height, tidal slope, depth, and sea pressure. The Lowell LLC TML-1 tilt current meters measure water velocity, heading, and temperature.

Long-term composited land surface temperature for the greater Phoenix, Arizona, USA, metropolitan area and the surrounding Sonoran desert derived from annual and seasonal Landsat imagery, 1998 to 2023

This data package consists of multiple decades of land surface temperature (LST) raster data across the Central Arizona-Phoenix Long-Term Ecological Research (CAP LTER) study area within metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona (USA), temporally aggregated by year and by four meteorological seasons (Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall). We derived LST values based on the thermal band from annual and seasonal composites of 30-m resolution Landsat 5-9 Level-2 Surface Reflectance imagery. All imagery retrieval and data processing were completed with Google Earth Engine (Gorelick et al. 2017) and program R. A complete description of data processing methods, including the aggregation of imagery by year and season and the calculation of the spectral index, can be found in the data package metadata (see 'Methods and Protocols') and accompanying Javascript code. ### citations: - Gorelick N, Hancher M, Dixon M, et al. Soil temperature at GCE core monitoring sites in the winter of 2019-2020

We deployed one hobo logger in each vegetation zone at each of the ten primary GCE monitoring sites, for a total of 20 loggers. The loggers were deployed at plot number 1 in each zone, to the “outside” (away from plot number 2), parallel in elevation with the middle of plot 1, buried 10 cm deep, lying horizontal, and tied with a string to the upper left hand (looking from the ocean towards the land) corner stake of the plot. Hobos were deployed during fall monitoring in October 2019, and set to start logging on October 15, 1 am, at 15 minute intervals, with the loggers set on Central Time (times were converted to UTC in post-processing). They were retrieved in April 2020 and files were trimmed to end on a standard date. Exact deployment and retrieval dates are on the attached adobe acrobat file.

Air and Soil Temperature in Hemlock Removal Experiment at Harvard Forest since 2004

The impending loss of hemlock trees due to hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) infestation is expected to lead to changes in the temperature regime of the forest understory. These changes will both drive succession and will themselves be altered by successional processes. Air temperature (1 m above forest floor) and soil temperature (at 10 cm depth) are measured at 1-minute intervals (hourly averages, minimum, and maximum are stored) using thermistors connected to Campbell 21-X dataloggers. Temperature measurements began 60-120 days prior to applications of the logging and girdling treatments, and will continue for the duration of the study.

Temperature Sensitivity of Microbial Activity in Three Forest Soils at Harvard Forest 2010-2011

We evaluated possible seasonal variation in the temperature sensitivity of microbially mediated soil fluxes related to decomposition (net N mineralization, net nitrification, proteolysis, the maximum velocity (Vmax) of proteolysis, microbial respiration, and the Vmax of four soil exo-enzymes) across forests dominated by eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis), white ash (Fraxinus americana), and red oak (Quercus rubra) in Harvard Forest. We asked two simple questions: (1) do temperature sensitivities vary across forest types or different steps of the decomposition process, and (2) do temperature sensitivities display plasticity on a seasonal time frame?We observed substantial variation in temperature sensitivities (Q10 and R10 values) across the different fluxes and forest types. The ash soils exhibited the strongest temperature sensitivities and the mineral-N fluxes exhibited higher temperature sensitivities relative to the proteolytic fluxes or microbial respiration. The Vmax of soil exo-enzymes varied considerably in an interactive manner across forests and time, and the response of some enzymes was consistent with the thermal plasticity. The enzymatic kinetic properties Vmax and Km (half-saturation constant) were strongly correlated with slopes that differed across enzymes, reflecting an enzyme-specific tradeoff between maximum catalytic rate and substrate-binding efficiency. Generally, Q10 values were largely constant, but R10 values varied in a manner consistent with distinct seasonal plasticity. There was a consistent seasonal shift in R10 values coincident with snowmelt, suggesting that the time following snowmelt is a particularly interesting and dynamic period of microbial activity in these temperate forests.

Soil Temperature and Water Content in Macrosystems Biodiversity Project at Harvard Forest 2011-2012

Patterns of biodiversity, such as the increase toward the tropics and the peaked curve during ecological succession, are fundamental phenomena for ecology. Such patterns have multiple, interacting causes, but temperature emerges as a dominant factor across organisms from microbes to trees and mammals, and across terrestrial, marine, and freshwater environments. However, there is little consensus on the underlying mechanisms, even as global temperatures increase and the need to predict their effects becomes more pressing. The purpose of this project is to generate and test theory for how temperature impacts biodiversity through its effect on biochemical processes and metabolic rate. A combination of standardized surveys in the field and controlled experiments in the field and laboratory measure diversity of three taxa -- trees, invertebrates, and microbes -- and key biogeochemical processes of decomposition in seven forests distributed along a geographic gradient of increasing temperature from cold temperate to warm tropical. Readings of soil temperature and soil moisture were taken with HOBO sensors from November 2011 to November 2012. These sensors were installed at five experimental tree growth plots installed by the Enquist Lab (PI, Brian Enquist) from the University of Arizona as part of a macrosystems biodiversity and latitude project supported by the National Science Foundation under Cooperative Agreement DEB#1065836.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: salinity, temperature and current at CTD and ADCP mooring FOR01 from 2004 ongoing

Moored and bottom-mounted instrumentation (ADCP, CTD, thermistors, wave-tide meters) sampled year-round on the reef of Moorea Island, French Polynesia at LTER 1 fore reef site (FOR01). Sampling began in 2005. All data have been interpolated onto a 20 min grid. ADCP data are organized into 1-meter bins, measured as height from the bottom, to a maximum of 20 bins. All bins may not be filled, and although post-processing attempted to exclude data from bins 'above the surface', users need to exercise caution with the near-surface bins. CTD parameters include Pressure, Temperature, Conductivity, Salinity, and Density. The two moored CTD packages are located approximately 5 and 14 meters above the bottom and there are up to 5 additional temperature thermistors spaced vertically along the mooring line. Note that the upper CTD and temperature thermistor data were terminated in 2020, and the bottom CTD was terminated in February 2022. There are 2 bottom mounted thermistors in the vicinity of the mooring at 10 and 20 meter depth. A bottom-mounted wave-tide meter at 10-meter depth provides a measure of significant wave height and dominant wave period at a 2-hour sampling interval. Tide-related data may be calculated from bottom-mounted pressure sensor data.

Temperature, Salinity, Sound Velocity, Location, Depth, Heading, and Velocity measured aboard the R/V Nanuq for the Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER site, 2020-2021

This dataset describes measurements from a thermosalinograph and navigation device used aboard the R/V Nanuq during cruises in Resurrection Bay and the Gulf of Alaska. Thermosalinograph data includes temperature, salinity, conductivity, and sound speed measurements every five seconds while the instrument was in use. Navigation data describes latitude, longitude, depth, heading, course over ground, and speed over ground. Data are collected on R/V Nanuq using the ship's GPS devices and a Seabird Electronics SBE-45 thermosalinograph (TSG) that samples uncontaminated pumped seawater. Temperature and conductivity data are sampled every 5 seconds and salinity and sound velocity are derived parameters. No data quality control has been applied to this data, so users should be cautious that conductivity, salinity and sound speed dropouts to due bubbles are common when the ship is plowing through large waves. Data are collected by a variety of projects, including from the NSF-funded Northern Gulf of Alaska Long Term Ecological Research (NGA LTER) program, the Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Trustee Council (EVOSTC) Gulf Watch Alaska GAK1 project, the UAF Sub-Arctic Oceanography Field Course, the Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS) glider program, and others.

Lake Mendota Microbial Observatory Temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, pH, and conductivity data, 2006-present.

The Lake Mendota Microbial Observatory collects routine water physical and chemical measurements alongside their microbial samples. This dataset includes measurements of water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and conductivity collected at the central Deep Hole, collocated with a weather buoy (43°05'58.2"N 89°24'16.2"W). All measurements were collected with handheld probes. Data from 2006-2014 was compiled from multiple sources and includes only water temperature and dissolved oxygen. Data from 2014-2019 is from the same probe, a YSI Pro Plus instrument, and also includes pH and specific conductance. Routine microbial observatory sampling continues into the present.

Increased temperature, N and snowpack experiment for north of saddle, 2006 - ongoing.

In 2006 we established a global change experiment in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains to investigate how manipulations of warmer summer temperature, N deposition, and increased snowpack would affect the growth of alpine plants. The experiment was implemented on Niwot Ridge, where shrub cover has expanded by over 400% since 1946 (Formica et al. 2014). We established experimental plots north of the Niwot Ridge saddle, in an area of moist meadow tundra where willow shrub (Salix sp.) patches are present. Within experimental plots, Salix glauca seedlings were transplanted in 2006 and 2007 to test whether changing environmental conditions facilitated shrub survival and growth. In 2007 and 2008, phenological observations were recorded for all (2007) or abundant (2008) species in experimental plots. Measurements of plant species composition and aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) are also made annually or biennially (ANPP, 2017-onward). In 2021, canopy height and NDVI began being measured annually. In July of 2016, a community transplant experiment was implemented to test whether changing environmental conditions support changes in alpine tundra plant communities. Two species characteristic of (1) dry meadow tundra (Tetraneuris acaulis, Erigeron pinnatisectus), (2) snowbed tundra (Ranunculus adoneus, Saxifraga rhomboidea) and (3) subalpine meadow (Trollius albiflorus, Polemonium pulcherrimum) were transplanted into experimental plots. Survival and growth of transplants was documented annually through 2021.

Temperature data for the Green Lake 4 buoy, 2018 - ongoing.

High-resolution water quality data are fundamental to observing rapid ecological responses to meteorology, climate, and other disturbance events. Here we describe the deployment of a single buoy line with multiple sensors at fixed-depths from a subsurface float in the water-column of Green Lake 4 (GL4). Sensors on the buoy collect data in both summer and winter, thereby providing valuable insights into lake characteristics beyond our standard sampling period, including key transitional periods such as ice formation and ice break-up.

Soil moisture, temperature, and electrical conductivity data from the black sand extended growing season length experiment, 2018 - 2024, hourly.

As a result of climate change, the Rocky Mountain Front Range is experiencing warmer summers and earlier snowmelt. Due to the importance of snow for regulating soil temperature, growing season length, and available moisture in alpine ecosystems, even small shifts in the snow-free period could have large impacts. The focus of the Growing Season Length Experiment is to examine how terrain-related differences in climate exposure influence the way alpine habitats respond to climate change via earlier snowmelt. To simulate how changes in growing season length may affect biotic and abiotic components, NWT LTER researchers established 5 experimental sites each containing a pair 10 x 40m rectangular plots. These blocks include north and south facing aspects, subalpine and alpine tundra meadows in a range of hydrological conditions (e.g. dry meadows, moist meadows, wet meadows). We accelerated snowmelt in one plot of each block by adding chemically inert black sand, while keeping the second plot as an unmanipulated control (black sand was added to these plots after snow had naturally melted). This dataset includes measurements of soil temperature, moisture, and electrical conductivity.

Saddle soil temperature and moisture, 2024 - ongoing.

In rugged mountain terrain, microclimate variation may provide refugia that buffer the effects of climate change. We expect that complex terrain causes microsite variation in surface and subsurface temperature and soil moisture across hillslopes, thus mediating the extent to which organisms are exposed to warming conditions. Further, we expect that hillslope position will determine the microclimate that regulates ecological and biogeochemical responses.

Turf Transplant temperature, soil moisture and turf depths, 2024 - ongoing.

The Turf Transplant Experiment was set up in the summer of 2024. Paired experimental sites were established in two tundra community types - dry meadow and moist meadow - with one site of each community type pair in a lower elevation/warmer area and one site in a higher elevation/cooler area. Subplot turfs (25 cm^2) were transplanted (1) between sites of the same community type at different elevations/temperatures, (2) between plots within the same site or (3) left in place as non-transplant controls. This data package contains dates and depths of turfs as installation as well as plot-level moisture and temperature.

Air temperature data for C1 chart recorder, 1952 - ongoing.

Temperature data were collected on a daily time-scale from the C1 climate station (3018 m) since 1952. Over time various circumstances have led to days with missing values. Some missing values were estimated from redundant sensors and nearby climate stations using various methods. Greenland 1987 was a basis for the methodology. However when it was not possible to use this methodology, new methods were developed.
