Changes in community-weighted trait mean, functional diversity, precipitation, temperature and surface area along an elevational gradient in Tenerife, Canary Islands

<p>This dataset comprises community-weighted trait means and functional diversity of&nbsp;leaf traits, precipitation, temperature and surface area of the elevational belt recorded in roadside (disturbed) and interior (less disturbed) plots, along an elevational gradient of&nbsp;2,300 m in Tenerife, Canary Islands. The leaf traits measured were specific leaf area (SLA), nitrogen, carbon, phosphorous, nitrogen to carbon ratio,&nbsp; leaf dry matter content (LDMC), sodium, potassium and magnesium. The environmental variables measured are total precipitation of the growing season, mean temperature of the growing season and surface area of the elevation belt. This dataset has been used for the analysis presented in Ratier Backes et al. (in press).&nbsp;Mechanisms behind elevational plant species richness patterns revealed by a trait-based approach. <em>Journal of Vegetation Science</em>.</p>

UKCP18 RCM precipitation and temperature bias corrected using ISIMIP3BA change-preserving quantile mapping.

<p>We present bias-corrected UK Climate Projections 2018 (UKCP18; Met Office Hadley Centre, 2018) regional datasets for temperature, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration (1981-2080). All 12 members of the 12 km ensemble were corrected using quantile mapping and a change-preserving variant (Lange, 2019; Lange, 2020). Both methods effectively reduce biases in multiple statistics, while maintaining projected climatic changes. We provide guidance on using the bias-corrected datasets for climate change impact assessment. Germination response to winter temperatures changes with seed shape and length of temperature exposure

In many regions, the climate is changing faster during winter than during any other season, and a loss of snow cover combined with increased temperature variability can expose overwintering organisms to harmful conditions. Understanding how species respond to these changes during critical developmental times, such as seed germination, helps us assess ecological implications of winter climate change. To address this concern, we measured the breaking of seed dormancy and cold tolerance of temperate grassland species in the lab and field. In the lab, we ran germination trials testing the tolerance of 17 species to an extreme cold event. In the field, we deployed seeds of two species within a snow manipulation experiment at three locations and measured germination success biweekly from seeds subjected to ambient and reduced snow cover from winter into spring. From lab trials, cold tolerance varied among species, with seed germination decreasing <10% to 100% following extreme cold events. Cold tolerance was related to seed traits, specifically less round seeds, seeds that required cold stratification, and seeds that mature later in the season tended to be more impacted by extreme cold temperatures. This variation in seed cold tolerance may contribute to altered community composition with continued winter climate change. In the field, germination increased through late winter, coinciding with the accumulation of days where temperatures were favorable for cold stratification. Through spring, germination success decreased as warm temperatures accumulated. Collectively, species-specific seed cold tolerances and mortality rates may contribute to compositional changes in grasslands under continued winter climate change.

Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Soil and Air Temperature

Soil temperature was measured on all Climate Change Across Seasons Experiment (CCASE) plots. Reference (or control) plots are shared with the collaborating Northern Forest DroughtNet experiment. There are six plots total (each 11 x 14m). Two are warmed 5 degrees C throughout the growing season (Plots 3 and 4). Two others are warmed 5 degrees C in the growing season and have snow removed during winter to induce soil freeze/thaw cycles (Plots 5 and 6). Four kilometers (2.5 mi) of heating cable are buried in the soil to warm these four plots. Two additional plots serve as controls for our experiment (Plots 1 and 2). This data set includes tree dbh measurements for 2012. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Temperature response of water-saturated compact Longmenshan limestone and porous Rajasthan sandstone to changes in confining pressure

<p>Three data sets are stored in this data submission. The first data set includes the temperature response of water-saturated compact Longmenshan limestone (L27) and porous Rajasthan sandstone (RJS) to changes in confining pressure under drained/undrained conditions. The second data set includes the thermal properties of rock-forming minerals and estimations of thermal characteristic time/distance. The third data set includes the internal temperature evolution of the water-saturated sample within 1 s after instantaneous loading in models M-01, M-02 and M03, in which the thermal properties of the solid grains are set to be that of gypsum, average values of the main rock-minerals and <em>&alpha;</em>-quartz, respectively.</p>

Evidence that stress-induced changes in surface temperature serve a thermoregulatory function

<p>Changes in body temperature following exposure to stressors have been documented for nearly two millennia, however, the functional value of this phenomenon is poorly understood. We tested two competing hypotheses to explain stress-induced changes in temperature, with respect to surface tissues. Under the first hypothesis, changes in surface temperature are a consequence of vasoconstriction that occurs to attenuate blood-loss in the event of injury and serves no functional purpose <em>per se</em>; defined as the Haemoprotective Hypothesis. Under the second hypothesis, changes in surface temperature reduce thermoregulatory burdens experienced during activation of a stress response, and thus hold a direct functional value; here, the Thermoprotective Hypothesis. To understand whether stress-induced changes in surface temperature have functional consequences, we tested predictions of the Haemoprotective and Thermoprotective hypotheses by exposing Black-capped Chickadees (n=20) to rotating stressors across an ecologically relevant ambient temperature gradient, while non-invasively monitoring surface temperature (eye region temperature) using infrared thermography. Our results show that individuals exposed to rotating stressors reduce surface temperature and dry heat loss at low ambient temperature and increase surface temperature and dry heat loss at high ambient temperature, when compared to controls. These results support the Thermoprotective Hypothesis and suggest that changes in surface temperature following stress exposure have functional consequences and are consistent with an adaptation. Such findings emphasize the importance of the thermal environment in shaping physiological responses to stressors in vertebrates, and in doing so, raise questions about their suitability within the context of a changing climate.</p>

Data from: Decadal changes in masting behaviour of oak trees with rising temperature

<p>1. Decadal changes in masting behaviour—directional changes in seed production with fluctuations on a decadal time scale—are attracting widespread attention in the context of global climate change. However, our mechanistic understanding of the effects of climate on seed production on a decadal scale is unsatisfactory, partly because of insufficient statistical analyses of long-term data on masting.</p> <p>2. We detected decadal changes in masting behaviour in the Japanese oak (<em>Quercus crispula</em>) based on long-term data (38 years: 1980–2017) from the Kitakami Mountains of Japan. The moving average of seed production in a 20-year sliding window increased, whereas the coefficient of variation decreased. A wavelet power spectrum, as well as a second-order log-linear autoregressive (AR) model, showed that masting intervals shortened from 3 or 4 years to a 2-year cycle.</p> <p>3. The moving average of seed production increased linearly as the moving average of temperature increased. Temporal variations of the two AR model coefficients as a function of temperature were well described by concave curves.</p> <p>4. Synthesis. By conducting statistical analyses of a long-term seed-production dataset, we obtained significant evidence of decadal changes in the masting behaviour of the Japanese oak and showed that shortening of the masting interval was associated with rising temperature. A resource allocation shift and an environmental veto were discussed as possible mechanisms underlying the decadal change.</p>

Data from: a positive feedback to climate change: the effect of temperature on the respiration of key wood-decomposing fungi does not decline with time

<p>Heterotrophic soil microorganisms are responsible for ~50% of the carbon dioxide released by respiration from the terrestrial biosphere each year. The respiratory response of soil microbial communities to warming, and the control mechanisms, remains uncertain, yet is critical to understanding the future land carbon (C)-climate feedback. Individuals of nine species of fungi decomposing wood were exposed to 90 days of cooling to evaluate the medium-term effect of temperature on respiration. Overall, the effect of temperature on respiration increased in the medium term, with no evidence of compensation. However, the increasing effect of temperature on respiration was lost after correcting for changes in biomass. These results indicate that C loss through respiration of wood-decomposing fungi will increase beyond the direct effects of temperature on respiration, potentially promoting greater C losses from terrestrial ecosystems and a positive feedback to climate change.</p>
