Age-specific activation patterns and inter-subject similarity during verbal working-memory maintenance and Cognitive Reserve

<p>Cognitive Reserve, according to a recent consensus definition of the NIH-funded Reserve and Resilience collaboratory (<a href="https://reserveandresilience.com/">https://reserveandresilience.com/</a>), is constituted by any mechanism contributing to cognitive performance beyond, or interacting with, brain structure in the widest sense. To identity multivariate activation patterns fulfilling this postulate, we investigated a verbal Sternberg fMRI task and imaged 181 people with age coverage in the ranges 20-30 (44 participants) and 55-70 (137 participants). Beyond task performance, participants were characterized in terms of demographics, and neuropsychological assessments of vocabulary, episodic memory, perceptual speed, and abstract fluid reasoning. Participants studied an array of either 1, 3, or 6 upper-case letters for 3 seconds (=encoding phase), then a blank fixation screen was presented for 7 seconds (=maintenance phase), to be probed with a lower-case letter to which they responded with a differential button press whether the letter was part of the studied array or not (=retrieval phase). We focused on identifying maintenance-related activation patterns showing memory-load increases in pattern score on an individual-participant level for both age groups. We found such a pattern that increased with memory load for all but one person in the young participants (p&lt;0.001), and such a pattern for all participants in the older group (p&lt;0.001). Both patterns showed broad topographic similarities; however, relationships to task performance and neuropsychological characteristics were markedly different and point to individual differences in Cognitive Reserve. Beyond the derivation of group-level activation patterns, we also investigated the inter-subject spatial similarity of individual working-memory rehearsal patterns in the older participants' group as a function of neuropsychological and task performance, education and mean cortical thickness. Higher task accuracy and neuropsychological function was reliably associated with higher inter-subject similarity of individual-level activation patterns in older participants.</p>

Psycholinguistic features of verbal representation of the concept of "gender inequality" by student youth

<p><strong><em>Goal. </em></strong><em>To present the results of a psycholinguistic experiment devoted to the study of verbal representations of the concept of &quot;gender inequality&quot; in the linguistic consciousness of young people.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Methods: </em></strong><em>a</em><strong><em>&nbsp;</em></strong><em>systematic analysis and generalization of literature on gender aspects of psycholinguistic research. Directed associative experiment (DAE) with the word-stimulus &quot;gender inequality&quot;; method of cognitive interpretation; questionnaire: to clarify the characteristics of the sample, comparative-descriptive and mathematical-statistical methods.</em></p> <p><strong><em>Results. </em></strong><em>The concept of &quot;gender inequality&quot; in the linguistic consciousness of student youth is represented by such frequent associations as: humiliate (6.8%), fight (4.5%), suppress (3.7%), insult (2.6%) and limit (2.3%). Differences in the most frequent reactions of women and men were revealed: women - to humiliate 42 (7.9%), to fight 32 (6%), to suppress 19 (3.6%), to limit 16 (3%), to insult 15 (2.8%) ), respect 11 (2.1%), solve 11 (2.1%); men: humiliate 11 (4.5%), oppress 10 (4.1%), insult 5 (2%), defend 5 (2%). </em></p>

Verbal aspectual lexicon for BCS: Aspect.BCS

<p>The dataset is novel language resource for retrieving and researching verbal aspectual pairs in BCS (Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian) created using Linguistic Linked Open Data (LLOD) principles. As there is no resource to help learners of Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian as foreign languages to recognize the aspect of a verb or its pairs, we have created a new resource that will provide users with information about the aspect, as well as the link to a verb&rsquo;s aspectual counterparts. Dataset for "Distinguishing between temporary and permanent removal in verbal working memory"

<p><strong>Dataset for &ldquo;Distinguishing between temporary and permanent removal in verbal working memory&rdquo;</strong></p> <p><strong>Manuscript's abstract</strong></p> <p>We employed the retro-cue paradigm to examine performance improvements resulting from permanent versus temporary removal in verbal working memory. Permanent removal entails discarding a subset of WM representations marked as definitively irrelevant, while temporary removal involves momentarily setting aside the uncued subset of representations from the attentional focus, preserving accessibility for later refocusing. We observed that permanent and temporary removal led to marked progressive reductions in reaction time and errors across cue-target intervals (200, 400, 800, and 1600 ms), reflecting the gradual simplification of the search set following informative cues. Although removal conditions did not differ in accuracy, responses were slower in the temporary removal condition, especially at the longest interval. A key finding was that performance in the temporary removal condition, but not in the permanent removal condition, was modulated by the presentation order of the target's memory set. This order effect was also observed in a non-removal control condition where double retro-cues marked all presented information as relevant. We suggest that these order effects depend on maintaining the integrity of the retrieval structure (all the contextual cues) needed to guide attentional access to specific representations, including those provisionally set aside in the temporary removal condition. In conclusion, the primary distinction between permanent and temporary removal processes is that permanent removal simplifies the retrieval structure by eliminating unnecessary contextual cues, resulting in a greater reduction in the complexity of the search set compared to temporary removal.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Dataset description</strong></p> <p>FILES: one_row_per_trial.csv, one_row_per_trial.xlsx</p> <p>Column 1: participant_id (from 1 to 56).<br>Column 2: participant_sex (0 = female; 1 = male; 2 = other).<br>Column 3: participant_age (in years).<br>Column 4: frame_1_locus (the location of the presentation frame where the first set is presented; up: above the fixation cross; down: below the fixation cross).<br>Column 5: trial_number (from 17 to 64, block 1; from 81 to 128, block 2; from 145 to 192, block 3; from 209 to 256, block 4. Alexithymia disrupts verbal short-term memory

<p>While some research have now started to show long-term memory (LTM) deficits in</p> <p>alexithymia, short-term memory (STM) remained largely unexplored. We investigated</p> <p>whether the STM trace for emotion and neutral words might also be disrupted by</p> <p>alexithymia. Forty four participants were randomly assigned to study 1 in which the</p> <p>to-be-memorized 6-words lists were composed of words belonging to the same</p> <p>valence (i.e., pure lists condition, Study 1) and 44 other participants were randomly</p> <p>assigned to study 2 in which 6-words lists were composed of embedded neutral and</p> <p>emotional words (i.e., mixed lists condition). All the participants completed the</p> <p>Toronto-Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and a current mood states scale (PANAS).</p> <p>Results showed that a main effect of Alexithymia was observed in the pure lists</p> <p>condition while no alexithymia groups effect emerged in the mixed lists condition. In</p> <p>the pure lists condition only, correlation analyses confirmed that alexithymia</p> <p>significantly and negatively correlated with recall accuracy. The results are discussed</p> <p>with regard to the influence of alexithymia on the proposed role of 1) semantic</p> <p>organization of LTM on STM performance in the pure lists condition, and 2)</p> <p>attentional capture by emotion words in the mixed lists condition.</p>

What's in a name? Role of verbal context in touch

<p>Can a name (i.e., verbal context) change how we react to and perceive an object? This question has been addressed several times for chemosensory objects, but never for touch. To address this, two studies were run. In each, we allocated participants to a Positive, Neutral or Negative Group, and asked them to touch the same four objects, twice – first, named by the experimenter according to their Group-name, and second, named by the participant. Participants were timed as they touched and rated the objects on pleasantness and disgust. Negative-named objects were touched for shorter durations, and rated more negatively, than neutral-named objects, and positive-named objects were touched for the longest and rated most positively. In the second presentation, most objects (&gt;90%) were named by participants in accord with their assigned Group-names. The similarity of these findings to chemosensory verbal context effects and their mechanistic basis is discussed.</p>

Romance Verbal Inflection Dataset 2.0.0

<p>We introduce the Romance Verbal Inflection Dataset 2.0, a multilingual lexicon of Romance inflection covering 73 varieties. The lexicon provide verbal paradigm forms in broad IPA phonemic notation. Both lexemes and paradigm cells are organized to reflect cognacy. Such multi-lingual inflected lexicons annotated for two dimensions of cognacy are necessary to study the evolution of inflectional paradigms, and test linguist hypothesis systematically. However, these resources seldom exist, and when they do, they are not usually encoded in computationally usable ways. The Oxford Online Database of Romance Verb Morphology provides this kind of information, however, it is not maintained anymore and only available as a web service without interfaces for machine-readability. We collect its data and clean and correct it for consistency using both heuristics and expert annotator judgements. Most resources used to study language evolution computationally rely strictly on multilingual contemporary information, and lack information about prior stages of the languages. To provide such information, we augmented the database&nbsp; with Latin paradigms from the LatInFlexi lexicon. Finally, to make it widely available, the resource is released under a GPLv3 license in CLDF format.</p>

Data from: Two new species of Limbodessus diving beetles from New Guinea - short verbal descriptions flanked by online content (digital photography, μCT scans, drawings and DNA sequence data)

Background: To date only one species of Limbodessus diving beetles has been reported from the Island of New Guinea, L. compactus (Clark, 1862), which is widerspread in the Australian region. New information: We describe two new species of microendemic New Guinea Limbodessus and use a compact descriptive format flanked by enriched online content in wiki powered species pages. Limbodessus baliem sp.n. is described from ca. 1,600 m altitude in the Baliem Valley of Papua and Limbodessus alexanderi sp.n. from &gt;3,000 m altitude north of Sugapa, Papua. Based on our analysis, we also transfer three species from other genera to Limbodessus Guignot, 1939, with the following changes: Limbodessus deflectus (Ordish, 1966), new combination; Limbodessus leveri (J. Balfour-Browne, 1944), new combination; and Limbodessus plicatus (Sharp, 1882), new combination.

The Western South Slavic verbal suffix -nV/-ne

<p>This database supplements the derivational sub-database of WeSoSlaV (Milosavljević et al.&nbsp;2023) with the data reported in &Scaron;tarkl et al. (2024). It contains two sub-databases that document the properties of verbs with the affixal segment nV/ne in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian/Montenegrin (BCMS) and Slovenian, as included in the WeSoSlaV database (Milosavljević et al. 2023). This&nbsp;segment appears as ne in the present tense forms of both BCMS and Slovenian, but the vocalic&nbsp;component differs between the two languages in the infinitive stem: nu in BCMS and ni in&nbsp;Slovenian (hence the abbreviation nV/ne, where V stands for a vowel).</p>
