MSDI: a geo-tagged drone imagery for absolute visual localization

Genetic modification of the bee parasite Crithidia bombi for improved visualization and protein localization

<p><em>Crithidia bombi </em>is a trypanosomatid parasite that infects several species of bumble bees (<em>Bombus</em> spp.), by adhering to their intestinal tract. <em>Crithidia bombi </em>infection impairs learning and reduces survival of workers and overwintering queens. Although there is extensive research on the ecology of this host-pathogen system, we understand far less about the mechanisms that mediate internal infection dynamics. <em>Crithidia bombi</em> infects hosts by attaching to the hindgut via the flagellum, and one previous study found that a nectar secondary compound removed the flagellum, preventing attachment. However, approaches that allow more detailed observation of parasite attachment and growth would allow us to better understand factors mediating this host-pathogen relationship. We established techniques for genetic manipulation and visualization of cultured <em>C. bombi.</em> Using constructs established for <em>Crithidia fasciculata, </em>we successfully generated <em>C. bombi </em>cells expressing ectopic fluorescent transgenes using two different selectable markers. To our knowledge, this is the first genetic modification of this species. We also introduced constructs that label the mitochondrion and nucleus of the parasite, showing that subcellular targeting signals can function across parasite species to highlight specific organelles. Finally, we visualized fluorescently tagged parasites <em>in vitro</em> in both their swimming and attached forms, and <em>in vivo </em>in bumble bee (<em>Bombus impatiens</em>) hosts. Expanding our cell and molecular toolkit for <em>C. bombi </em>will help us better understand how factors such as host diet, immune system, and physiology mediate outcomes of infection by these common parasites.</p>

Bilateral hearing impaired children assessment of horizontal auditory localization accuracy in a virtual visual environment with free head movement

<p>Twenty-two hearing-impaired children (13 males and 9 females, mean age: 10.45&nbsp;years, standard deviation 3.13&nbsp;years) participated in an auditory localization experiment in a virtual visual environment. We investigated the contribution of head movements to localization along the interaural plane in absence of motor constraints and visual cues on a virtual scene, experienced by individuals wearing a head-mounted display while listening to stimuli coming from a circular loudspeaker array. Each session included multiple test conditions. In each condition, the stimulus was presented from loudspeaker positions that were randomly balanced across a sequence of 13 x&nbsp;5 = 65&nbsp;trials. Each participant performed the task first with both devices turned on (&quot;On-On&quot;), then with one device (either the left or right one) turned on and one off (&quot;On-Off&quot;), and finally with both devices turned off (&quot;Off-Off&quot;). The On-On condition was presented first during each test session because it provided an everyday listening context participants were accustomed to, and consequently confident with. The third condition was omitted if a patient&#39;s pure tone average threshold was above the stimulus level used for the test in the frequency range [0.5-4] kHz. Depending on this threshold, nine Bi HA listeners attended also the Off-Off condition. Two Bi HA listeners were unable to attend the On-Off test condition either, since their session had to be stopped as early as they reported annoyance or fatigue to the experimenter. Children were affected by non-syndromic hearing loss (&quot;GEN NO SDR&quot;) in 8 cases (6 GJB2 gene mutations, 2 other gene mutations), syndromic hearing loss (&quot;SDR&quot;)&nbsp;in 4 (2 Usher syndromes, 1 chromosomal instability, 1 Waardenburg syndrome), and 1 enlarged vestibular aqueduct (inner ear malformation, &quot;IEM&quot;). Other causes of hearing loss (&quot;Other&quot;) were congenital cytomegalovirus infection in 2 cases, chemotherapy with platinum derivatives for neuroblastoma in 2, preterm delivery in 1, and prolonged neonatal intensive care unit stay in 1 case. The cause was not identified (&quot;ND&quot;) in 3 cases.&nbsp;All participants were right-handed and had no diagnosis of motor impairment. Here are presented only sessions including the complete set of 65 trials, except seven sessions attended by Bi-CI listeners, each missing one trial (six in the On-Off condition and one in the On-On condition) that was not recorded due to a technical problem.</p>

Visualizing local fast ionic conduction pathways in nanocrystalline lanthanum manganite by isotope exchange-atom probe tomography - dataset

<p>Raw data for atom probe tomography 2D elemental reconstructions of 18O-exchanged La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 thin films. LSM thin films were deposited by large-area PLD (PVD Systems &ndash; PLD 5000) using a 248 nm KrF excimer laser (Lambda Physics &ndash; COMPex PRO 205). The layers were deposited on Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>&nbsp;(0001) single crystal substrate (Crystec GmbH). A thin barrier layer of Ce<sub>0.8</sub>Sm<sub>0.2</sub>O<sub>1.9</sub>&nbsp;(SDC) was deposited before the LSM film in order to avoid cationic intermixing at the interface.&nbsp;Both layers were deposited at 700 &deg;C, under an oxygen pressure of 2.6 &times; 10<sup>&minus;2</sup>&nbsp;mbar, target&ndash;substrate distance of 95 mm, laser fluency &asymp;1.2 J cm<sup>&minus;2</sup>&nbsp;and 5 Hz of laser frequency. The thickness of LSM and SDC layers deposited was &asymp;45 nm and &asymp;35 nm, respectively, as measured by spectroscopy ellipsometry (UVISEL, Horiba scientific).The nominal oxygen exchange temperature and time were 550 &deg;C and 1 h and 40 min, respectively. Instrument&nbsp;Cameca LEAP 4000X Si. APT performed&nbsp;at 45.5 K using a 30 pJ laser energy and 500 kHz pulse rate. The flight path length was 90 mm and the ion detection rate was set to 5 ions per 1000 pulses, resulting in a bias range of 5000&ndash;7400 V during the data collection. Reconstructions were generated in Cameca&#39;s IVAS 3.6.18 software.&nbsp;A systematic energy deficit correction was employed to improve the mass spectral resolution.</p>

In this paper, we are interested in the representation of multi-objective landscapes and their multi-modality. More specifically, we revise and extend the network of Pareto local optimal solutions (PLOS-net), inspired by the well-established local optima network from single-objective optimization. We first define a compressed PLOS-net which allows us to enhance its perception while preserving the important notion of connectedness between local optima. We then study an alternative visualization of the (compressed) PLOS-net that focuses on good-quality solutions, improves the distinction between connected components in the network, and generalizes well to landscapes with more than 2 objectives. We finally define a number of network metrics that characterize the PLOS-net, some of them being strongly correlated with search performance. We visualize and experiment with small-size multi-objective nk-landscapes, and we disclose the effect of PLOS-net metrics against well-established multi-objective local search and evolutionary algorithms.</p>

AVECL-UMONS DATABASE FOR AUDIO-VISUAL EVENT CLASSIFICATION AND LOCALIZATION

<p>AVECL-UMONS is a dataset for audio-visual event classification and localization in the context of office environments. The dataset is composed of 11 event classes recorded at several realistic positions in two different rooms. The dataset comprises two types of sequences according to the number of events in the sequence. 2662 unilabel sequences and 2724 multilabel sequences are recorded corresponding to a total of 5.24 hours.</p> <p>The dataset is complementary to the <em>SECL-UMons&nbsp;</em>dataset<em> </em>(also available on zenodo). The <em>SECL-UMons</em> dataset includes recordings made with a microphone array while <em>AVECL-UMONS</em> includes recordings made with 4 webcams.</p>

Despite good progress, realistic deployment of autonomous UAVs in GPS-denied environments is still rudimentary. In this work, we propose a novel system to generate a collision-free path towards a user-specified inspection direction for a small UAV using monocular-inertial sensing only and performing all computation onboard. Estimating both the previously unknown scene and the UAV&rsquo;s trajectory on the fly, this system is evaluated on real experiments outdoors in the presence of wind and poorly structured environments. Our analysis reveals the shortcomings of using sparse feature maps for planning, highlighting the importance of robust dense scene estimation proposed here.</p>

Data from: Contributions of local speech encoding and functional connectivity to audio-visual speech perception

Seeing a speaker's face enhances speech intelligibility in adverse environments. We investigated the underlying network mechanisms by quantifying local speech representations and directed connectivity in MEG data obtained while human participants listened to speech of varying acoustic SNR and visual context. During high acoustic SNR speech encoding by temporally entrained brain activity was strong in temporal and inferior frontal cortex, while during low SNR strong entrainment emerged in premotor and superior frontal cortex. These changes in local encoding were accompanied by changes in directed connectivity along the ventral stream and the auditory-premotor axis. Importantly, the behavioral benefit arising from seeing the speaker's face was not predicted by changes in local encoding but rather by enhanced functional connectivity between temporal and inferior frontal cortex. Our results demonstrate a role of auditory-frontal interactions in visual speech representations and suggest that functional connectivity along the ventral pathway facilitates speech comprehension in multisensory environments.
