Relationship between mineral extraction, oil extraction, and agribusiness with employability, municipal gross domestic product, and voting data in Brazil
<p>This dataset looks at the number of Brazilian municipalities where mining is a key economic activity and those where mining is a key job provider. We also listed municipalities that have mining as both a main economic activity and the main employer in a given town. We have also generated maps to visualize the impact of mining in Brazil as a key economic activity and/or job provider. Similarly, we have listed the same information for all the municipalities that received oil royalties in 2019, and the top 100 municipalities whose wealth was mainly generated by agribusiness in 2022. By detailing the economic and employment situation in Brazilian extractive municipalities (mining, oil, and crops), we demonstrate that company towns in Brazil (locations that are highly dependent on one key economic activity for employment generation) are few. Extractive industries may no longer be labour intensive, although economic dependency may follow indirectly, such as because of tax generation. We also offer data on national elections to demonstrate that there is not a clear correlation between economic activity and voting patterns, which may be explained by low employability. The main objective of this dataset is to generate a discussion on the need to redefine company towns in Brazil.</p>
Socio-ecological drivers of public conservation voting: restoring gray wolves to Colorado, USA
<p>Understanding factors that influence real-world public conservation behaviors is critical for developing successful conservation policies and management actions. Citizens of Colorado, USA recently passed a ballot initiative to restore the gray wolf to its former range within the state. The >3 million votes offer an unprecedented opportunity to test factors that influenced decisions to support or oppose this conservation action. We created spatial linear regression models to assess the relationship between support for wolf restoration and 1) the presidential vote, 2) distance to conservation intervention (i.e., proposed wolf reintroduction and existing wolves), and measures of 3) livelihood and 4) demographics using precinct-level data. Our results demonstrate the strong relationship between support for wolf restoration and political support for the Democratic candidate for president in the 2020 election, and highlights how other factors, including increased age, participation in elk hunting, and proximity to the reintroduction region were associated with less support. Our findings underscore the critical role of politicization on public conservation action and the need to develop outreach and engagement strategies to mitigate polarization.</p>

<p>This data was captured from an interactive panel discussion session at the Software Citation workshop at the British Library on Monday 13 June. The audience were asked to vote on a series of questions via <a href="https://mentimeter.com/">Mentimeter</a>, with the panel (and audience members) then discussing the results. TOTE-VOTE_AircraftRemoteSensing_DC8_DIAL_Data_1 is the remotely sensed Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) data collected onboard the DC-8 aircraft during the Tropical Ozone Transport Experiment – Vortex Ozone Transport Experiment (TOTE-VOTE) campaign. Data collection is complete.The Tropical Ozone Transport Experiment – Vortex Ozone Transport Experiment (TOTE-VOTE) campaign was conducted by NASA from December 1995 to February 1996. TOTE-VOTE took place in the Pacific region with the goal of gaining a better understanding of background transport processes from tropical/polar regions to midlatitudes. Nineteen flights were conducted using the NASA DC-8 aircraft and balloon sondes with the purpose of measuring the transport of filaments of air moved in or out of the arctic polar vortex and the tropical stratospheric reservoir. TOTE-VOTE also utilized ground-based instruments along with aircrafts.Various instrumentation was used during TOTE-VOTE in order to achieve the mission objectives. The DC-8 aircraft was equipped with the NCAR NOxyO3 instrument, the NASA Langley Airborne Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) system, the Forward Scattering Spectrometer Probe (FSSP), the Microwave Temperature Profiler (MTP), the Multiple-Angle Aerosol Spectrometer Probe (MASP), and the diode laser spectrometer system, historically known as the Differential Absorption Carbon monOxide Measurement (DACOM). The NCAR NOxyO3 is a type of 4-channel chemiluminescence instrument that was used to quantify NOx (NO and NO2), NOy (total reactive nitrogen), and ozone (O3) in the air. The DIAL system used four lasers to make DIAL O3 profiles, along with collecting data on aerosol backscattering, aerosol depolarization ratio, aerosol extinction, and aerosol optical depth. The FSSP is an optical particle counter that measured particle size distribution. The MTP is a passive microwave radiometer that measured natural thermal emissions and was used during TOTE-VOTE to record temperature. The MASP spectrometer collected in-situ measurements of particle concentration, particle size distribution, and particle extinction.
