Arctic Sea Ice Type Products Based on Active and Passive Microwave Remote Sensing (2002-2021)
<p>Based on FY-3 MWRI and other microwave radiometer and scatterometer data, this dataset explores the distribution of Arctic sea ice types from 2002 to 2021 using the K-means clustering method. Spatial and temporal resolutions are 12.5 km and 1 day, respectively. The dataset is of integer type, where 0 represents open water, 1 represents first-year ice, 2 represents multi-year ice, 3 represents land, and 4 represents data gaps. The data is stored in .tiff format.</p>

<p>This data set is part of the article Wraase et al. (2022): Remote sensing -supported mapping of the activity of a subterranean landscape engineer across an afro-alpine ecosystem. Remote sensing in Ecology and Conservation. (https://doi.org/10.1002/RSE2.303)</p> <p>The repository contains a Readme file ("readme.txt") and two additional folders labeled: “input data” and “script”.<br> <br> The first folder contains 13 data files further divided into three subfolders “cca_analysis”, “main_modelling_prc_texture_idx” and “vectors”. Data formats are .csv format for all tables, .rds files for model objects from R and .shp format for all vector data.</p> <p>The second folder contains all 31 R-scripts necessary to do the analysis, as described in the article. Additionally, the folder is further categorized into five subfolders equivalent to the main analysis operations: “cca_analysis”, “landsat_temp_modelling”, “main_modelling_prc”, “maxent” and “texture_idx”.</p>

Data from: PCB126 inhibits the activation of AMPK-CREB signal transduction required for energy sensing in liver
3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB126), a dioxin-like PCB, elicits toxicity through a wide array of non-carcinogenic effects, including metabolic syndrome, wasting, and non-alcoholic fatty-liver disease (NAFLD). Previously, we reported decreases in the transcription of several enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis, before the early onset of lipid accumulation. Hence, this study was aimed at understanding the impact of resultant decreases gluconeogenic enzymes on growth, weight and metabolism in the liver, upon extended exposure. Male Sprague-Dawley rats (75-100 g), fed a defined AIN-93G diet, were injected (ip) with single dose of soy oil (5 ml/kg body weight; n=14) or PCB126 (5 µmol/kg; n=15), 28 d, prior euthanasia. A subset of rats from each group were fasted for 12h (vehicle (n=6) and PCB126 (n=4)). Rats only showed significant weight loss between days 14 and 28 (P<0.05) and some mortality (P=0.0413). As in our previous studies, the expression levels of enzymes involved in gluconeogenesis (Pepck-c, G6Pase, Sds, Pc and Ldh-A) and glycogenolysis (Pygl) were strongly downregulated. The decreased expression of these enzymes in PCB126 treated rats after a 12 h fast decreased hepatic glucose production from glycogen and gluconeogenic substrates, exacerbating the hypoglycemia. Additionally, PCB126 caused hepatic steatosis and decreased the expression of the transcription factor Pparα and its targets, necessary for fatty-acid oxidation. The observed metabolic disruption across multiple branches of fasting metabolism resulted from inhibition in the activation of enzyme AMPK and transcription factor CREB signaling, necessary for "sensing" energy-deprivation and the induction of enzymes that respond to the PCB126 triggered fuel crisis in liver.

ASCENDS: Active Sensing of CO2 With AVOCET, California and Nevada, 2016
This dataset provides in situ airborne measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) over California and Nevada on February 10-11, 2016. Measurements were taken onboard a DC-8 aircraft during this Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days and Seasons (ASCENDS) airborne deployment. CO2 was measured with NASA's Atmospheric Vertical Observations of CO2 in the Earth's Troposphere (AVOCET) instrument while over California and Nevada. The objective of this deployment was to assess the performance of the 2016 version of the CO2 Sounder LiDAR. The two flights were flown to compare results from an experimental LiDAR sensor with the AVOCET instrument. Aircraft navigation and flight meteorological data are also provided. The data are provided in ICARTT and comma-separated values (CSV) formats.
Pre-ABoVE: Remotely Sensed Active Layer Thickness, Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, 1992-2000
Active layer thickness (ALT) is a critical parameter for monitoring the status of permafrost that is typically measured at specific locations using probing, in situ temperature sensors, or other ground-based observations. The thickness of the active layer is the average annual thaw depth, in permafrost areas, due to solar heating of the surface. This data set includes the mean Remotely Sensed Active Layer Thickness (ReSALT) over years 1992 to 2000 for an area near Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. The data were produced by an Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technique that measures seasonal surface subsidence and infers ALT. ReSALT estimates were validated by comparison with ground-based ALT measurements at multiple sites. These results indicate remote sensing techniques based on InSAR could be an effective way to measure and monitor ALT over large areas on the Arctic coastal plain.These data provide gridded (100-m) estimates of active layer thickness (cm; ALT), seasonal subsidence (cm) and subsidence trend (mm/yr), as well as calculated uncertainty in each of these parameters. This data set was developed in support of NASA's Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) field campaign.The data are presented in one netCDF (*.nc) file.
ABoVE/ASCENDS: Active Sensing of CO2, CH4, and Water Vapor, Alaska and Canada, 2017
This dataset provides in situ airborne measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and water vapor concentrations, plus air temperature, pressure, relative humidity, and wind speed values over Alaska and the Yukon and Northwest Territories of Canada during 2017-07-20 to 2017-08-08. Measurements were taken onboard a DC-8 aircraft during this Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days and Seasons (ASCENDS) airborne deployment over portions of the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) domain. CO2 and CH4 were measured with NASA's Atmospheric Vertical Observations of CO2 in the Earth's Troposphere (AVOCET) instrument. Water vapor and relative humidity were measured with Diode Laser Hydrometer. Measurements of column-averaged dry-air mixing ratio CO2 measurements (XCO2) were taken with the CO2 Sounder Lidar instrument. The airborne CO2 Sounder is a pulsed, multi-wavelength Integrated Path Differential Absorption lidar. It estimates XCO2 in the nadir path from the aircraft to the scattering surface by measuring the shape of the 1572.33 nm CO2 absorption line. The data were collected in order to capture the spatial and temporal dynamics of the northern high latitude carbon cycle as part of ABoVE and are provided in ICARTT file format.

ABoVE: Active Layer Thickness from Remote Sensing Permafrost Model, Alaska, 2001-2015
This dataset provides annual estimates of active layer thickness (ALT) at 1 km resolution across Alaska from 2001-2015. The ALT was estimated using a remote sensing-based soil process model incorporating global satellite data from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) land surface temperature (LST) and snow cover extent (SCE), and Soil Moisture Active and Passive (SMAP) satellite soil moisture records. The study area covers the majority land area of Alaska except for areas of perennial ice/snow cover or open water. The ALT was defined as the maximum soil thawing depth throughout the year. The mean ALT and mean uncertainty from 2001 to 2015 are also provided.
