BRAIN Journal-ANNSVM: A Novel Method for Graph-Type Classification by Utilization of Fourier Transformation, Wavelet Transformation, and Hough Transformation-Figure 9. Illustration of three different wavelets with three waves that have high amplitude values, as indicated by the dashed red circles

The mother wavelet of Coiflet 5 contained triple-high oscillation amplitude (i.e., Figure 9a). We considered that this mother wavelet was inappropriate for our data because overall our data possibly contained only a few matches with the mother wavelet of Coiflet 5. Moreover, the Symlet 10 (i.e., Figure 9b) and 20 (i.e., Figure 9c) also provided supportive results that were lower than others in ANNSVM_WLHT because their mother wavelets also had a similar shape as that of Coiflet 5. For similar reasons, the Haar wavelet was not proper because it is a step function.

VLF phase and amplitude data recorded at Scott Base Antarctica

This dataset contains the phase and amplitude data from VLF radio transmitter NPM (Hawaii, 21.4 kHz, 21.4⁰N, 158.2⁰E) recorded at the field-site for New Zealand's Scott Base, Arrival Heights, in Antarctica (77.8⁰S, 166.8⁰E). The propagation path is ~11 Mm long, oriented nearly north-south, with the mid-point at 28.9⁰S, 164.4⁰W.

The data files are formatted as ASCII text files with columns of time (s), amplitude (dB) & phase (degrees) data. The MATLAB script plotUltraMSK.m can be used to plot the data files and an example data plot has been included in the dataset.

Zebra finch song and distance call amplitude measurements: A transmission experiment and observational transects in the natural environment

Birdsong is typically seen as a long-range signal functioning in mate attraction and territory defense. Among birds, the zebra finch is the prime model organism in bioacoustics, yet almost exclusively studied in the lab. In the wild, however, zebra finch song differs strikingly from songbirds commonly studied in the wild as zebra finch males sing most after mating and in the absence of territoriality. Using data from the wild, we here provide an ecological context for a wealth of laboratory studies. By integrating calibrated sound recordings, sound transmission experiments and social ecology of zebra finches in the wild with insights from hearing physiology we show that wild zebra finch song is a very short-range signal with an audible range of about nine meters and that even the louder distance calls do not carry much farther (up to about fourteen meters). These integrated findings provide an ecological context for the interpretation of laboratory studies of this species and indicate that the vocal communication distance of the main laboratory species for avian acoustics contrasts strikingly with songbirds that use their song as a long-range advertisement signal.

Nonlinear scattering of 90-degree pitch angle electrons in the outer radiation belt by large-amplitude EMIC waves

This file is a collection of numeric data files which were used to create all figures in the paper (under review as of December 19, 2019). All the data were obtained from numerically solving the Lorentz equation of motion for 5 MeV electrons under EMIC waves superposed onto a dipolar background magnetic field.
