Effects Of Atmospheric Attenuation On The Lightning Spectrum

<p>Spectrum&nbsp;carries&nbsp;important&nbsp;information&nbsp;reflecting&nbsp;atomic&nbsp;and&nbsp;molecular&nbsp;processes&nbsp;inside&nbsp;a&nbsp;light&nbsp;source.&nbsp;Accurate&nbsp;spectral&nbsp;diagnosis&nbsp;is&nbsp;vital&nbsp;in&nbsp;revealing&nbsp;the&nbsp;microscopic&nbsp;physical&nbsp;mechanism&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;lightning&nbsp;discharge&nbsp;process.&nbsp;Spectral&nbsp;correction&nbsp;was&nbsp;applied&nbsp;considering&nbsp;the&nbsp;influence&nbsp;of&nbsp;atmospheric&nbsp;attenuation,&nbsp;grating&nbsp;efficiency,&nbsp;and&nbsp;camera&nbsp;response&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;observed&nbsp;spectrum,&nbsp;thereby&nbsp;solving&nbsp;the&nbsp;problems&nbsp;of&nbsp;atmospheric&nbsp;attenuation&nbsp;in&nbsp;long distance&nbsp;lightning&nbsp;spectrum&nbsp;observations.&nbsp;Based&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;restored&nbsp;spectrum,&nbsp;the&nbsp;temperature&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;lightning&nbsp;return&nbsp;stroke&nbsp;channel&nbsp;was&nbsp;calculated&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;ionic&nbsp;and&nbsp;atomic&nbsp;lines&nbsp;respectively.&nbsp;The&nbsp;result&nbsp;showed&nbsp;that&nbsp;corrected&nbsp;temperature&nbsp;at&nbsp;the&nbsp;initial&nbsp;stage&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;return&nbsp;stroke,&nbsp;calculated&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;ionic&nbsp;line,&nbsp;could&nbsp;reach&nbsp;up&nbsp;to&nbsp;40,000&nbsp;K,&nbsp;which&nbsp;was&nbsp;about&nbsp;10,000&nbsp;K&nbsp;higher&nbsp;than&nbsp;the&nbsp;values&nbsp;directly&nbsp;obtained&nbsp;from&nbsp;the&nbsp;observed&nbsp;spectrum.&nbsp;Atmospheric&nbsp;attenuation&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;atomic&nbsp;spectral&nbsp;line&nbsp;in&nbsp;the&nbsp;nearinfrared&nbsp;band&nbsp;is&nbsp;relatively&nbsp;weak;&nbsp;therefore,&nbsp;atmospheric&nbsp;attenuation&nbsp;was&nbsp;inferred&nbsp;to&nbsp;have&nbsp;a&nbsp;relatively&nbsp;less&nbsp;effect&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;channel&nbsp;temperature&nbsp;that&nbsp;was&nbsp;calculated&nbsp;by&nbsp;the&nbsp;atomic&nbsp;spectral&nbsp;lines.&nbsp;This&nbsp;work&nbsp;provided&nbsp;the&nbsp;attenuation&nbsp;ratio&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;characteristic&nbsp;lines&nbsp;in&nbsp;lightning&nbsp;spectra&nbsp;with&nbsp;distance,&nbsp;and&nbsp;can&nbsp;used&nbsp;for&nbsp;more&nbsp;precisely&nbsp;quantitative&nbsp;investigation&nbsp;on&nbsp;the&nbsp;physical&nbsp;characteristics&nbsp;of&nbsp;the&nbsp;lightning&nbsp;process.&nbsp;It&nbsp;also&nbsp;has&nbsp;application&nbsp;value&nbsp;for&nbsp;improving&nbsp;the&nbsp;spectral&nbsp;diagnostic&nbsp;techniques&nbsp;on&nbsp;celestial&nbsp;body&nbsp;and&nbsp;other&nbsp;natural&nbsp;luminous&nbsp;process.<br> &nbsp;</p>

Data from: Palmer et al. 2021 “Behaviorally mediated trophic cascade attenuated by prey use of risky places at safe times” Oecologia

The mere threat of predation may incite behavioral changes in prey that lead to community-wide impacts on productivity, biodiversity, and nutrient cycling. The paucity of experimental manipulations, however, has contributed to controversy over the strength of this pathway in wide-ranging vertebrate systems. We investigated whether simulated gray wolf (Canis lupus) presence can induce behaviorally-mediated trophic cascades, specifically, whether the ‘fear’ of wolf olfactory cues alone can change deer foraging behavior in ways that affect plants and soils. Wolves were recently removed from the Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve (Minnesota, USA), such that consumptively mediated predator effects were negligible. At 32 experimental plots, we crossed two nested treatments: wolf urine application and herbivore exclosures. We deployed camera traps to quantify how white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) adjusted their spatiotemporal habitat use, foraging, and vigilance in response to wolf cues and how these behavioral changes affected plant productivity, plant communities, and soil nutrients. Weekly applications of wolf urine significantly altered deer behavior, but deer responses did not cascade to affect plant or soil properties. Deer substantially reduced crepuscular activity at wolf-simulated sites compared to control locations. As wolves in this area predominantly hunted during mornings and evenings, this response potentially allows deer to maximize landscape use by accessing dangerous areas when temporal threat is low. Our experiment suggests that prey may be sensitive to ‘dynamic’ predation risk that is structured across both space and time and, consequentially, prey use of risky areas during safe times may attenuate behaviorally-mediated trophic cascades at the predator–prey interface.

Raw data to "Specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators are differentially altered in peripheral blood of patients with multiple sclerosis and attenuate monocyte and blood-brain barrier dysfunction"

<p>Background: Lack of resolution of inflammation may be considered a critical player for the onset and progression of multiple sclerosis. To demonstrate this we extracted lipids from plasma samples of healthy donors and MS patients and we quantified over 65 lipid mediators (LMs) through LC-MS-MS using signature diagnostic ions via multiple reaction monitoring.</p> <p>Results: Out of the 65 lipid mediators analyzed, only 42 were detected and out of those only 27 were finally revealed to show differences between healthy subjects and MS patients. These 27 LMs belonged to the arachidonic (AA), docosahexaenoic (DHA) or eicosapentaenoic (EPA) acid metabolomes and we could clusterize each form of MS into a specific profile by means of principal component analysis. Altogether, compared to healthy subjects, MS patients showed a strong production of several AA-derived eicosanoids (i.e. PGE2, PGD2 and PGF2a) (Fig.1D) and a little production of two DHA-derived pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), i.e. Protectin D1 (D1) and protectin DX (PDX) (Fig.1A). However, no production of DHA-derived resolvins and maresins (Fig. 1B) as well as EPA-derived resolvins (Fig.1 C) was observed.</p> <p>When stratifying MS patients according to disease form, both relapsing MS patients showed production of only two pro-resolving mediators (SPMs), i.e. Resolvin D1 (RvD1) and Protectin D1 (D1) compared to healthy subjects, whereas remitting MS patients showed a production of only few AA- and DHA-derived metabolic pathway markers and progressive MS patients a strong production of several eicosanoids as well as other metabolic pathway markers.</p> <p>Conclusions: These data suggest that along disease progression, there is a lack of production of anti-inflammatory and pro-resolving lipid mediators associated to a higher production of pro-inflammatory ones.</p>

The Repository for the Manuscript "Temperature and Precipitation Dominate Seasonal Variations in Seismic Velocity and Attenuation in Deserts"

<p><strong><span>Overview</span></strong></p> <p><span>This dataset contains the essential code and data for calculating the Horizontal-to-Vertical Spectral Ratio (HVSR), analyzing vehicle-generated seismic events, retrieving Q-values, and comparing them with meteorological data. It also includes waveform data from 20 seismic events.</span></p> <p><span>The seismic data originate from a temporary broadband seismic array deployed in the Tarim Basin, from July 2017 to October 2019 (Zuo et al., 2022). This dataset focuses on three seismic stations: T12, T52, and T23. Stations T12 and T23 recorded data from July 2017 to October 2019, while station T52 recorded from November 2018 to October 2019.</span></p> <p><span>&nbsp;</span></p> <p><strong><span>Code</span></strong></p> <p><span>The dataset includes Python scripts for calculating HVSR and retrieving Q-values. The HVSR calculation follows Li et al., (2023), while forward modeling is based on Antonio Garc&iacute;a-Jerez et al., (2016).</span></p> <p><span>The codes for Q-value estimation are stored in &lsquo;Retrieving Q-value&rsquo; folder. The Q-value estimation process, demonstrated for station T12 in Jupyter Notebook, involves extracting single vehicle signals from continuous data, time-frequency spectrogram calculations, two-dimensional correlation coefficient of their time-frequency amplitude calculations, using hierarchical clustering algorithm to classify vehicle signals, vehicle speed estimation, and performing Q-value inversion.</span></p> <p><span>&nbsp;</span></p> <p><strong><span>Dataset </span></strong></p> <p><span>HVSR variations over time for three stations are calculated from continuous seismic recordings and are stored in the <em>&lsquo;HVSR&rsquo;</em> folder under each station directory. </span></p> <p><span>Time-frequency spectrograms for Q-value estimation are stored in the <em>&lsquo;Spectrogram&rsquo;</em> folder, with filenames indicating the record time of each vehicle signal. The Q-value is inverted using these signals, and for stability, we stacked every 100 individual results, which are stored in the 'Q-values' folder under the corresponding station name folder. Due to interference from wind and other sources, Q-value inversion using vehicle signals was unreliable for T23, so Q-values are only provided for T12 and T52.</span></p> <p><span>Meteorological data (temperature and soil water content) are stored in the <em>&lsquo;temperature&rsquo;</em> and <em>&lsquo;soil water content&rsquo;</em> folders under each station directory.</span></p> <p><span>Seismic event waveforms for 20 selected strong earthquakes are stored in the <em>&lsquo;events&rsquo;</em> folder, with filenames indicating the start and end times of the events.</span></p> <p><span>&nbsp;</span></p>

YB1 dephosphorylation attenuates atherosclerosis by promoting CCL2 mRNA decay

<p>&nbsp;Y-box binding protein 1 (YB1) is an RNA binding protein (RBP) that has been reported to play important roles in inflammation and atherosclerotic plaque formation.&nbsp;To explore the molecular mechanism of phosphorylated YB1 (pYB1)&nbsp;in atherosclerosis <em>in vitro</em>, we constructed YB1 phosphorylation site (Ser-100) mutant stable smooth muscle cell line (3ds-V5) and performed RNA profile screening through RNA-seq.&nbsp; We found inflammatory pathways and&nbsp;CCL2 was&nbsp;significantly decreased in the 3dS-V5 YB1 mutant compared with the control group (YB1-V5).</p>
