Historical and future land use and land cover data for the STARS4Water river basins

<p>Dataset contains data on historical and future land use and land cover for seven European river basins (Danube, Drammen, Duero, East Anglia, Messara, Rhine and Seine) being case study basin in the STARS4Water, and a shapefile with river basin boundaries. The average area fraction of five general land use classes (crop, forest, grass, urban and other) within the project river basins was calculated at five-year intervals starting in 2016 and ending in 2051. This dataset was prepared based on the data available in the "LUCAS LUC future land use and land cover change dataset for Europe (Version 1.1)" repository (Hoffmann et al., 2022, DOI: 10.26050/WDCC/LUC_future_EU_v1.1).</p>

Bird surveys in French Broad River Basin, North Carolina, 2014

This dataset includes counts of birds from surveys conducted in the French Broad River Basin in western North Carolina, USA. This basin is in the Southern Appalachian Mountains. Data were collected to examine the spatial and seasonal supply of biodiversity-based cultural ecosystem services (CES), in this case, nature study through birdwatching. The data includes bird species observed at 69 sites on public and private lands during the period 2014-04-01 to 2014-08-08. Bird species were categorized with respect to migration status, level of conservation concern (both based on literature), and relative abundance in the study region (based on eBird data). Environmental data for 56 sites are provided: elevation, early season precipitation, mean summer temperature, land cover diversity, tree cover, vegetation structural diversity, vegetation annual productivity, and building density at local and landscape scales. Graves et al. (2019, doi:10.1007/s13280-018-1068-1) used these data to analyze seasonal shifts in birdwatching supply and how those shifts impacted public access to projected birdwatching hotspots. Landscape patterns of CES supply differed substantially among five CES indicators (total bird species richness, and richness of migratory, infrequent, synanthrope, and resident species). For example, total species richness hotspots seldom overlapped with hotspots of migratory or infrequent species. Public access to CES hotspots varied seasonally. This study suggests that simple, static biodiversity metrics may overlook spatial dynamics important to CES users.

University of Oregon Great Basin Vegetation Cover Study, Southeastern Oregon, 2023.

This data package contains qualitative and quantitative environmental and vegetation survey data used to investigate connections between cattle grazing intensity and vegetation cover in the Great Basin region of Eastern Oregon. The experimental design utilized a piosphere approach to select plots of different grazing intensity in pastures stratified by recent burn history. Surveys were completed in 340 plots around 43 water sources in the summer of 2023. Surveys consisted of recording site characteristics (e.g. slope, aspect, human impacts) as well as measuring plant species cover, cattle and other ungulate dung counts, biocrust development, and soil stability and texture. Plants were generally identified to species where possible, allowing for comparisons between species as well as identification of trends among functional groups (shrubs, annual grasses, perennial grasses, annual forbs, perennial forbs, trees).

Langenheim Plant Species Data (1953) and Associated Resurvey Datasets (2014), Gunnison Basin, Colorado, USA

Quantitative plant abundance data were collected from the same 121 sites at two time periods separated by 65 years (1948-1952 and 2012-2014) in the Colorado Rocky Mountains to examine changes in plant community composition. The sites range in elevation from 2600m to 4100m. Approximately 30 sites were sampled from each of four habitat types: sagebrush (2528-3119m, n=27 sites), spruce-fir forest understory (3001-3520m, n=31 sites) , upland herb = montane meadow (3124-3850m, n=30 sites), and alpine (3549-4013m, n=33 sites). The earlier data set was collected by Jean H. Langenheim (1953, 1962) and consisted of counts of species occurrences along approximately 100m paced transects, noting species touching her boot tip every pace (n=100 sampled points per site). The later data set was collected by Stephanie D. Zorio (2015, 2016) consisting of counts of species occurrences every 1m along 300m transects (n=300 sampled points per site). The sites resurveyed by Zorio (2015, Zorio et al. 2016) were placed as close as possible to the original sites based on the written descriptions of Langenheim, but are only approximate. The GPS coordinates given for the resurveyed sites are the centerpoint of 2 perpendicular 150m transects, one across the slope and the other perpendicular to the slope. GPS coordinates for alpine sites along narrow ridges are the start and end points of three 100m transects along the ridge. Georeferenced localities and environmental site data are presented in Table 2: Lang Zorio Env Site Data. Langenheim’s original data were extracted from tables in her thesis (Langenheim 1953). These data omitted species that occurred in fewer than 14% of sites of a given habitat type (constancy). Species that occurred at very low frequencies (<1% per site) were only denoted as an x in the tables. Zorio converted these to frequencies of 0.5 for quantitative comparative purposes. Model simulated hydrological estimates for the North Slope drainage basin, Alaska, 1980-2010

Estimates of runoff, river discharge, snow water equivalent (SWE), subsurface runoff, and soil temperatures are drawn from the Permafrost Water Balance Model (PWBM). The simulation and derived data span the period 1980-2010. The model was forced with daily gridded meteorological data obtained from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA) reanalysis (version 5.2.0). The estimates of total runoff (daily), soil temperature (daily), subsurface runoff (monthly), and SWE (monthly) are expressed on a spatial grid (N=312; 25x25 km EASE-Grid version 1, Northern Hemisphere) over the North Slope drainage basin, with the coastline extending from Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) to just west of the Mackenzie River delta. River discharge, calculated as a volume flux of runoff at each grid cell, was routed through the river network defined on a simulated topological network (STN). Archived files contain discharge flux through the grid cell representing the outlet of each of forty-two basins defined across the region on the 25 km resolution EASE-Grid. Occurrence of animals along five transects at the Jornada Basin LTER site from 1989-1994

This dataset contains data on the occurrence of rabbits, birds, and lizards observed along the Jornada Basin LTER (II) animal transects in southern New Mexico, USA. Five, 1 km transects were established, each in a different vegetation zone, near the current NPP study locations C-CALI, G-IBPE, M-NORT, P-COLL, and T-EAST. An observer walked each transect once every two weeks from early 1989 through 1994 recording animals observed along the transects. The data consists of species names, numbers of individuals, and perpendicular distances observed from transects, as well as weather and other context observations. Observation history and species codes are described in additional files. This study is complete.

Seasonal aboveground plant biomass estimates at 15 net primary production (NPP) study sites at Jornada Basin LTER from 1989-ongoing

This data package contains aboveground vegetation cover, volume, and calculated biomass values at the 15 Net Primary Production (NPP) study sites on Jornada Experimental Range (JER) and Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) lands. Sites were selected to represent the 5 major ecosystem types in the Chihuahuan Desert (upland grasslands, playa grasslands, mesquite-dominated shrublands, creosotebush-dominated shrublands, tarbush-dominated shrublands). For each ecosystem type, three sites were selected to represent the range in variability in production and plant diversity; thus the locations are not replicates. All sites are excluded from domestic grazing. Eleven sites are in non-grazed pastures, and at the other four sites 1 hectare areas around the observational plots were fenced in 1988. At all sites a grid of 49 (48 at one playa location) 1m x 1m replicate quadrats was laid out when sampling began in 1989. For each quadrat, aboveground biomass has been calculated from two data sources: 1) non-destructive horizontal cover and vertical height measurements of individual plants, or plant parts, within each quadrat, and 2) linear regression coefficients for each plant species derived from off-quadrat cover, height, and harvested biomass measurements. Non-destructive measurements (1) are taken during winter, spring, and fall measurement campaigns, then aggregated by species for each quadrat, and resulting dimensions are used to calculate species biomass (grams) by quadrat and season using using the species-specific regression coefficients derived from dataset 2. This is the most detailed biomass dataset available and can be used to derive values of net primary production between seasons or annually. Each dataset record contains calculated biomass (and related variables) by species, quadrat, season, and site. In fall, winter, and spring periods aboveground biomass was calculated for each species and quadrat at each NPP site. These calculations rely on two data sources: 1) non-destructive horizontal cover and vertical height measurements of individual plants, or plant parts, within each quadrat, and 2) linear regression coefficients for each plant species derived from off-quadrat cover, height, and harvested biomass measurements. NPP is then calculated as the positive biomass increment between seasons. The annual totals in this dataset are derived by summing mean site NPP values for winter (October - February), spring (February - May), and fall (May - October) increments for a single calendar year. Data collection is ongoing with new annual NPP values calculated after the conclusion of each growing season. This data package contains reference harvest measurements for the long-term Net Primary Production (NPP) study at the Jornada Basin LTER. Data here include horizontal cover, vertical height, and aboveground biomass of plants harvested near, but outside, a grid of permanent NPP quadrats at each of 15 NPP sites. These sites were selected to represent the 5 major ecosystem types in the Chihuahuan Desert (upland grasslands, playa grasslands, mesquite-dominated shrublands, creosotebush-dominated shrublands, tarbush-dominated shrublands). For each ecosystem type, three sites were selected to represent the range in variability in production and plant diversity; thus the locations are not replicates. All sites are excluded from domestic grazing. Eleven sites are in non-grazed pastures, and at the other four sites 1 hectare areas around the observational plots were fenced in 1988. At all sites a grid of 49 (48 at one playa location) 1m x 1m replicate quadrats was laid out when sampling began in 1989. Harvests are made outside the quadrat grid, but inside the fence. Height and cover are recorded in the field. Live biomass is weighed in the lab and all measurements are recorded as reference harvest data. Subsequently, regressions between the harvested biomass and plant volume values are used to derive allometric equations that determine biomass from non-destructive volume measurements in the permanent NPP quadrats. Further details are described in the methods metadata. This is an ongoing study with new harvest data (from selected species) collected in the spring, fall, and winter each year. Attention: These data are not appropriate for estimates of percentage cover because of the way the data are collected.

Biomass of harvested annual and perrenial forbs and grasses along fertilized and unfertilized ecosystem transects at the Jornada Basin LTER site in 1989

This data package contains biomass data for annual or perennial grasses and forbs harvested from quadrats along the Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I) transects in southern New Mexico, USA. These transects are located in a livestock exclosure established in 1982 in the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) and run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The Treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Along each transect, 91 stations, each with a plant intercept line, are spaced at 30 meter intervals. Each plant intercept line is perpendicular to the transect and is 30 meters in length broken into 5-meter segments. The included dataset includes biomass data for grasses and forbs clipped from 1 square meter quadrats directly downslope from some, but not all, of these segments. The harvest measurements occurred in September 1989. Data consists of the date, transect, station number, quad, JRN and USDA Plants species codes, species binomial, habit, form, and biomass. This data package contains nitrogen mineralization data from soils collected along the Jornada Basin LTER (LTER-I) transects in southern New Mexico, USA. These transects are located in a livestock exclosure established in 1982 in the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center (CDRRC) and run from the middle of the College Playa up to the foot of Mt. Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The Treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Along each transect, 91 stations, each with a plant intercept line, are spaced at 30 meter intervals. For this dataset, 60 soil samples (total) were collected along the control and fertilized treatment transects and mixed with potassium chloride solution (KCl) on Nov 27, 1989, then filter extracted the following day. The dataset contains a soil moisture correction factor, sample weights, total inorganic nitrogen (NO3+NO2-N), and nitrogen in ammonium (NH4-N) for Week F (field) of nitrogen mineralization potentials. The soil mineralization data complements the biomass harvest measurements that occurred in September 1989 (dataset knb-lter-jrn.210015001). This study is complete.

The objective of this ongoing study is to investigate how pulses of precipitation translate into pulses of plant aboveground net primary productivity (NPP) across grassland to shrubland ecotones in the northern Chihuahuan Desert. This dataset consists of annual aboveground net primary productivity estimates by plant functional groups in three habitat vegetation zones (grassland, ecotone, and shrubland) at three grassland-to-shrubland ecotone sites in the Jornada Basin, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA. The annual ANPP estimates are derived from plant cover measurements (see methods). Due to its growth form, Yucca elata (YUEL), in the leaf succulent functional group, has been found to produce large errors in interyear biomass estimates. This data package separates biomass estimates for YUEL and non-YUEL leaf succulents so that users can decide whether to combine them or keep them separate. In general, the authors recommend against using the YUEL estimates for most purposes. Data collection is ongoing with new observations in spring and fall of each year; data from both annual sampling times are required to estimate annual ANPP.

This data package contains annual ANPP estimates both with and without YUEL, but the authors strongly recommend using the non-YUEL estimates for most purposes. Soil water content measurements and rainfall data for plots with experimentally altered precipitation and nutrient inputs at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 2011-ongoing

This dataset contains soil volumetric water content data collected starting in 2011 for a long-term precipitation and nutrient manipulation experiment at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. This experiment uses precipitation shelters and irrigation treatments to manipulate water inputs, and fertilization treatments to alter nitrogen input to 2.5 x 2.5 meter plots in a desert grassland. Soil sensors are installed at surface and deep soil layers in each plot and collect hourly averages of volumetric water content using a time-domain reflectometry method. This dataset contains daily averages. This is an ongoing study and the dataset will be updated yearly.

Summerford (2.7 km in length). Prior to the exclosure, the study site was moderately to heavily grazed for the past 100 years. The treatment transect was treated annually with ammonium nitrate fertilizer (NH4NO3 at 10g N/m2/yr) until 1987. Creosotebush litterfall was collected monthly from traps under ten shrubs in the creosote zones along the control and treatment transects. Oven-dry weights of leaves, stems, and seed fractions as well as total dry weight of monthly collections are recorded. This study is complete.

Repeat overhead photographs of microplots in a cross-scale interactions experiment (CSIS) at Jornada Basin LTER, 2013-ongoing

This dataset contains archived overhead photos collected from microplots in a long-term experiment (2013-present) of cross-scale interactions (CSIs) at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, U.S.A. Experimental treatments were initiated in 2013 at 15 experimental blocks, each with 4 treatment plots: plant-scale herbicide of mesquite shrubs, patch-scale connectivity modifiers (ConMods), herbicide + ConMods, and control without manipulations. Repeat, overhead (downward-looking) photographs of ten "microplots" in each plot were taken for estimation of litter, soil, and vegetation cover in the experimental treatment and control plots over time. Photographs have been rotated and then cropped to provide standardized areas for this analysis. The photographs are archived by year in Zip files. This study is ongoing and new photos will be added annually. Cover estimates derived from these photos are in EDI dataset knb-lter-jrn.210413005.
