Birth of the Marimacho: Modernismo's Trans* Cultural Productions in Latin America

<p><em>Birth of the Marimacho: Modernismo&rsquo;s Trans* Cultural Productions in Latin America </em>is a Horizon Marie Skłodowska Curie Action 2022-funded project under grant number 101103095.<em> </em>This research analyzes the representations of a radical gender embodiment in early-twentieth-century Latin American literature, medical science, and visual culture: the &lsaquo;&lsaquo;marimacho&rsaquo;&rsaquo;. In the Hispanic tradition, <em>marimacho </em>is the umbrella notion that may refer to a sexist slur as much as a modern form of non-binary gender, a transmasculine identification, or a lesbian sexual identity. This project examines the aesthetic construction of this hybrid, counter-cultural, and gender-dissident figure in an extensive cultural repertoire that includes novels, plays, silver films, leaflets, medical studies, prison and mental hospital records, poems, newspaper, and tabloid articles from the period 1880-1930.</p> <p>Data collection aims to assemble a corpus of published and unpublished sources held in print and digital archives and special collections in Latin America and Europe. These sources are copyright-free and are available through open access in university digital repositories, national archives, and research institutes in Germany, France, Mexico, Spain, and Argentina. The main purpose of the data collected and presented in this critical reference data base is to analyze its content through the methodologies of literary studies and gender theory concerning the main research questions of the project outlined in the original proposal. Some of the research questions that inform this project are:</p> <p>1) What gendered formats, systems of racial classification, and mechanisms of sexual exclusion did modernista &amp; avant-garde writers use to construct the <em>marimacho</em> (butch women/ early forms of transmasculinities/lesbian populations) but also the <em>maric&oacute;n</em>(the fairy) as public enemies of national morals?</p> <p>2) How and why did writers engage with tropes of world literary traditions&mdash;notions of Greek love, vampirism, primitivism, orientalism, teratology, and sexual inversion&mdash; to define the&nbsp;<em>marimachos</em> and <em>maricones</em> as dangers to bourgeois society?</p> <p>3) What aesthetic practices such as clothing, hair, makeup, fashion, fragrance, tattooing, sports, dancing, poetics, and musical performances did queer women, non-binary peoples, and trans* men use to contest naturalized notions of femininity and masculinity?</p> <p>This research seeks to increase the understanding of the region&rsquo;s politics of gender and sexuality during the so-called positivist era (1880-1930), that is, before the solidification of LGBTQ activism, pride literature, and minority social movements of the Global 1960s. In the period of modernization that this project covers, there was a reaction against new gender dynamics led by cosmopolitan networks of feminism and the discreet homosexual liberation movements of the turn of the century. In response, the keepers of gender normativity created the <em>marimacho</em> as a monster version of conventional masculinity. Today, examining this response of the late 19<sup>th</sup> and early 20<sup>th</sup> centuries is crucial to understand the current anti-LGBT hatred in socio-political discourse.</p> <p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p> <p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p> <p><strong>&nbsp;</strong></p>

Mothers of twins had higher old-age survival than mothers of singletons in Estonian 19th-century birth cohorts

<p><strong><span>Study question:</span></strong><span> Do the mothers of twins and singletons differ regarding post-partum and old-age mortality?</span></p> <p><span>&nbsp;</span><strong><span>Summary answer:</span></strong><span> M</span><span>others of twins had twice as high post-partum mortality as mothers of singletons; survival of twinners was higher than survival of the mothers of singletons after the 67<sup>th </sup>lifespan percentile.</span></p> <p><strong><span>What is known already:</span></strong><span> Twinning is typically associated with higher post-partum maternal mortality. The evidence about whether twinning incurs long-term survival costs of reproduction or is a trait pertinent to long-lived women is scarce and contradictory.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Study design, size, duration:</span></strong><span> The study is based on the data of the Estonian Family Register (operating from 1926-43) and involves 5 565 mothers of twins and 119 613 mothers of singletons born between 1850-99. The subset for comparing maternal lifespans included 1 703 &ndash; 1 884 mothers of twins and </span><span>19 747 </span><span>&ndash; 36 690 mothers of singletons.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Participants/materials, setting, methods:</span></strong><span> Post-partum maternal mortality was analysed in the whole sample (including mothers of a single child) by logistic regression. Most of the analyses were performed in samples where each mother of twins was matched against mothers of singletons based&nbsp;on parity, urban versus rural origin, whether their lifespan was known, date of birth and age at first birth. Quantile regression was used to analyse age-dependent variations in maternal mortality rates. Lifespans were compared in linear mixed models. All models were adjusted for relevant biodemographic covariates.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Main results and the role of chance:</span></strong><span> The twinning rate in the whole sample was 4.4%. During the year after giving birth, maternal mortality for multiple gestations was 0.75% (17/2 273) and 0.37% (</span><span>449</span><span>/</span><span>122 750)</span><span> for single gestations (OR = 2.05, 95% CI = 1.21 &ndash; 3.23). The association between twinning and post-natal maternal mortality remained significant in a model controlling for parity and age of first and last birth. The life spans of the mothers of twins and singletons did not differ in matched samples. Past the 67<sup>th</sup> lifespan percentile, the odds of survival were significantly higher for mothers of twins than mothers of singletons, as indicated by non-overlapping 95% confidence intervals.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Limitations, reasons for caution: </span></strong><span>Relatively low number of individuals (22 802) with known age at death due to discontinuation of the register after 1943.</span></p>

Changing birth places to care for healthcare workers, lessons from the pandemic: a scoping review.

<p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p><strong>Background:</strong> Together with women giving birth, healthcare professionals involved in perinatal care faced significant challenges due to Covid-19 restrictions. The birth environment has been affected, influencing the quality and nature of interactions between care providers, women, and their families as well as the quality of care provided to women.</p> <p><strong>Aim:</strong> To identify, categorize and reflect on the most relevant aspects of the experience of healthcare workers, especially obstetricians and gynecologists, involved in the peripartum period, after the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic up till now.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> A scoping review was conducted. After conducting a literature search using a variety of online data- bases, 22 articles were included, and the main/recurrent themes were identified.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>The following main themes were described: fear of the virus, changes in the way care is provided, increase in the workload, mental health, psychological distress, support strategies, university education, and perspectives of health managers.</p> <p><strong>Discussion:</strong> Standard maternity departments appeared not appropriate to face the pandemic. Psychological distress on perinatal healthcare workers&rsquo;, the majority of whom were women, led to the impairment of their mental health, affecting the quality of care provided to women.&nbsp; A key role was played by healthcare managers support in shaping how doctors can cope and recover, and in reducing the mental health impact.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> It is very important to address some of the most relevant issues to acknowledge the role of healthcare workers and improve the health systems organization to face future pandemics.</p>

Online appendix and simulated data sets for assesment of Birth-Death Exposed-Infectious (BDEI) phylodynamic model estimators

<p>The birth-death exposed-infectious (BDEI) phylodynamic model describes the transmission of pathogens featuring an incubation period (when there is a delay between the moment of infection and becoming infectious, as for Ebola and SARS-CoV-2), and permits its estimation along with other parameters, from time-scaled phylogenetic trees.</p> <p>We implemented a highly parallelizable estimator for the BDEI model in a maximum likelihood framework (<a href="https://github.com/evolbioinfo/bdei">PyBDEI</a>) using a combination of numerical analysis methods for efficient equation resolution. This dataset contains the assessment of PyBDEI in comparison with a Bayesian implementation in <a href="http://www.beast2.org/">BEAST2</a> (mtbd package) and a deep learning estimator <a href="https://github.com/evolbioinfo/phylodeep">PhyloDeep</a>: the parameter values estimated by the 3 tools.<br><br>The PyBDEI and the theoretical findings behind it are described in A Zhukova, F Hecht, Y Maday, and O Gascuel. Tsetse flies (Glossina m. morsitans) choose birthing sites guided by substrate cues with no evidence for a role of pheromones

<p>Tsetse flies significantly impact public health and economic development in sub-Saharan African countries by transmitting the fatal disease African trypanosomiasis. Unusually, instead of laying eggs, tsetse birth a single larva that immediately burrows into the soil to pupate.  Where the female chooses to larviposit is therefore crucial for offspring survival. Previous laboratory studies suggested that a putative larval pheromone, n-pentadecane, attracts gravid female <em>Glossina morsitans</em> <em>morsitans</em> to appropriate larviposition sites. However, this attraction could not be reproduced in field experiments. Here, we resolve this disparity by designing naturalistic laboratory experiments that closely mimic the physical characteristics found in the wild. We show that gravid <em>G.</em> <em>m. morsitans</em> were neither attracted to the putative pheromone nor, interestingly, to pupae placed in the soil.  In contrast, females appear to choose larviposition sites based on environmental substrate cues. We conclude that, among the many cues that likely contribute to larviposition choice in nature, substrate features are a main determinant, while we failed to find evidence of a role of pheromones.</p>

The multiomic landscape of epidemiological factors contributing to preterm birth in low- and middle-income countries

<p><span></span></p> <p><span></span></p> <p><span>Preterm birth (PTB) is the leading cause of death in children under five, yet comprehensive studies are hindered by its multiple complex etiologies. Epidemiological associations between PTB and maternal characteristics have been previously described. This work employed multiomic profiling and multivariate modeling to investigate the biological signatures of these characteristics. Maternal covariates were collected during pregnancy from 13,841 pregnant women across five sites. Plasma samples from 231 participants were analyzed to generate proteomic, metabolomic, and lipidomic datasets. Machine learning models showed robust performance for the prediction of PTB (AUROC=0.70), time-to-delivery (<em>r</em>=0.65), maternal age (<em>r</em>=0.59), gravidity (<em>r</em>=0.56), and BMI (<em>r</em>=0.81). Time-to-delivery biological correlates included fetal-associated proteins (e.g., ALPP, AFP, PGF) and immune proteins (e.g., PD-L1, CCL28, LIFR). Maternal age negatively correlated collagen COL9A1; gravidity with endothelial NOS and inflammatory chemokine CXCL13; and BMI with leptin and structural protein FABP4. These results provide an integrated view of epidemiological factors associated with PTB and identify biological signatures of clinical covariates impacting this disease. </span></p>

Impacts of taxon-sampling schemes on Bayesian tip dating under the fossilized birth-death process

<p>Evolutionary timescales can be inferred by molecular-clock analyses of genetic data and fossil evidence. Bayesian phylogenetic methods such as tip dating provide a powerful framework for inferring evolutionary timescales, but the most widely used priors for tree topologies and node times often assume that present-day taxa have been sampled randomly or exhaustively. In practice, taxon sampling is often carried out so as to include representatives of major lineages, such as orders or families. We examined the impacts of different densities of diversified sampling on Bayesian tip dating on unresolved fossilized birth-death (FBD) trees, in which fossil taxa are topologically constrained but their exact placements are averaged out. We used synthetic data generated by simulations of nucleotide sequence evolution, fossil occurrences, and diversified taxon sampling. Our analyses under the diversified-sampling FBD process show that increasing taxon-sampling density does not necessarily improve divergence-time estimates. However, when informative priors were specified for the root age or when tree topologies were fixed to those used for simulation, the performance of tip dating on unresolved FBD trees maintains its accuracy and precision or improves with taxon-sampling density. By exploring three situations in which models are mismatched, we find that including all relevant fossils, without pruning off those that are incompatible with the diversified-sampling FBD process, can lead to underestimation of divergence times. Our reanalysis of a eutherian mammal data set confirms some of the findings from our simulation study, and reveals the complexity of diversified taxon sampling in phylogenomic data sets. In highlighting the interplay of taxon-sampling density and other factors, the results of our study have practical implications for using Bayesian tip dating to infer evolutionary timescales across the Tree of Life.</p>

Stability and change in male fertility patterns by cognitive ability across 32 birth cohorts

<p>The relationship between cognitive ability (CA) and childbearing remains unsettled. Using Norwegian administrative registers with population coverage, we study how male lifetime fertility patterns differ across cognitive score groups, and how these changed across the 1950–1981 birth cohorts, covering a period characterized by rapid social and economic change. The analyses reveal systematic differences in fertility and fertility timing across CA groups, with high-scoring males having delayed but ultimately higher fertility than lower-scoring males. This pattern remains stable over time despite strong trends towards delayed and reduced fertility. The overall positive relationship between CA and fertility is primarily driven by high rates of childlessness in the lowest-scoring group, with low-scoring males showing higher rates of parity progression conditional on having children.</p>

The limits of the constant-rate birth-death prior for phylogenetic tree topology inference

<p>Birth-death models are stochastic processes describing speciation and extinction through time and across taxa and are widely used in biology for inference of evolutionary timescales. Previous research has highlighted how the expected trees under constant-rate birth-death (crBD) tend to differ from empirical trees, for example with respect to the amount of phylogenetic imbalance. However, our understanding of how trees differ between crBD and the signal in empirical data remains incomplete. In this Point of View, we aim to expose the degree to which crBD differs from empirically inferred phylogenies and test the limits of the model in practice. Using a wide range of topology indices to compare crBD expectations against a comprehensive dataset of 1189 empirically estimated trees, we confirm that crBD trees frequently differ topologically compared with empirical trees. To place this in the context of standard practice in the field, we conducted a meta-analysis for a subset of the empirical studies. When comparing studies that used crBD priors with those that used other non-BD Bayesian and non-Bayesian methods, we do not find any significant differences in tree topology inferences. To scrutinize this finding for the case of highly imbalanced trees, we selected the 100 trees with the greatest imbalance from our dataset, simulated sequence data for these tree topologies under various evolutionary rates, and re-inferred the trees under maximum likelihood and using crBD in a Bayesian setting. We find that when the substitution rate is low, the crBD prior results in overly balanced trees, but the tendency is negligible when substitution rates are sufficiently high. Overall, our findings demonstrate the general robustness of crBD priors across a broad range of phylogenetic inference scenarios but also highlight that empirically observed phylogenetic imbalance is highly improbable under crBD, leading to systematic bias in data sets with limited information content.</p>

Data for: A modified Michaelis-Menten equation estimates growth from birth to 3 years in healthy babies in the US

<p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Background</span></strong><span>: Standard pediatric growth curves cannot be used to impute missing height or weight measurements in individual children</span><span>. The Michaelis-Menten equation, <span>used for characterizing substrate-enzyme saturation curves, has been shown to model growth in many organisms including nonhuman vertebrates. </span>We investigated whether this equation <span>could be used</span> to interpolate missing growth data in children in the first three years of life.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Methods</span></strong><span>: We developed a modified Michaelis-Menten equation and compared expected to actual growth, first in a local birth cohort (N=97) then in a large, outpatient, pediatric sample (N=14,695). </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Results</span></strong><span>: The modified Michaelis-Menten equation showed excellent fit for both infant weight (median RMSE: boys: 0.22kg [IQR:0.19; 90%&lt;0.43]; girls: 0.20kg [IQR:0.17; 90%&lt;0.39]) and height (median RMSE: boys: 0.93cm [IQR:0.53; 90%&lt;1.0]; girls: 0.91cm [IQR:0.50;90%&lt;1.0]). Growth data were modeled accurately with as few as four values from routine well-baby visits in year 1 and seven values in years 1-3; birth weight or length was essential for best fit. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong><span>: A modified Michaelis-Menten equation accurately describes growth in healthy babies aged 0-36 months, allowing interpolation of missing weight and height values in individual longitudinal measurement series. The growth pattern in healthy babies in resource-rich environments mirrors an enzymatic saturation curve.</span></p>
