Effect of biological colonization on ceramic roofing tiles by lichens and a combined laser and biocide procedure for its removal
<p>Biodeterioration damage is an important issue in conservation and restoration of built heritage, especially when ceramic materials are used. Biological colonization of ceramic roofing tiles by lichens is a common phenomenon. However, there are no reports to date of lichens removal from unglazed roofing tiles for conservation purposes. This paper for the first time reveals the results of a combined procedure undertaken to assess the removal of lichens on different kinds of unglazed ceramic roofing tiles by treatments based on both dual sequential laser irradiation and treatment using Acticide<sup>® </sup>CF biocide. Three species of lichens were identified: <em>Verrucaria nigrescens</em>, <em>Calogaya decipiens</em> and <em>Pyrenodesmia teicholyta</em>. The chemical and mineralogical composition of roofing tiles were characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, optical polarized petrographic microscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Laser irradiation was accomplished by applying sequences of nanosecond laser pulses at two wavelengths (1064 and 266 nm). After dual sequential laser irradiation a biocide was applied. To assess the combined effect of both treatments several techniques were used, including stereo and fluorescence (FM) microscopies, scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopies, and FT-Raman spectroscopy. Chemical composition of the analyzed roofing tiles was shown as a relevant factor regarding the degree of interaction between the biological colonization and the substrate, and hence, the bioweathering effect. The combined procedure has proved to be very effective in damaging and mostly collapsing the lichen thalli without altering the substrate.</p>
Synergistic homovalent and heterovalent substitution effects on piezoelectric and relaxor behavior in lead-free BaTiO3 ceramics
<p>This study investigates lead-free BaTiO3 (BT) perovskite ceramics, unraveling the synergistic effects arising from simultaneous homovalent (Zr) and heterovalent (Nb) substitution. Focusing on piezoelectric, ferroelectric, and relaxor behaviors, this research employs a comprehensive suite of analyses, including temperature-dependent<br>dielectric measurements, polarization-electric field hysteresis loops, and bipolar strain measurements. Significantly, our study unveils that the simultaneous substitution of Zr and Nb in the BT lattice induces roomtemperature relaxor behavior at relatively low concentrations (5 % Zr and 3 % Nb), yielding higher permittivity and larger maximum polarization compared to single element (Zr or Nb) substituted BT relaxors. Bipolar strain measurements showcase substantial large-signal d33* values (~250 pm/V) across a broad temperature range (–50 ◦C to 30 ◦C) for BT ceramics with simultaneous 5 % Zr and 2 % Nb substitution. This research advances understanding of homovalent and heterovalent substitution in BT ceramics and opens avenues for tailoring properties to suit specific applications. </p>

Surface measurement data of polished LTCC: Characterization of pores in polished low temperature co-fired glass-ceramic composites for optimization of their micromachining
<p>Pores are intrinsic defects of ceramic composites and influence their functional properties significantly. Their characterization is therefore a pivotal task in material and process optimization. It is demonstrated that polished section analysis allows for obtaining precise information on pore size, shape, area fraction, and homogeneous distribution. It is proven that laser scanning microscopy provides accurate height maps and is thus an appropriate technique for assessing surface features. Such data is used to compare areas with good and poor polishing results, and various surface parameters are evaluated in terms of their informative value and data processing effort. The material under investigation is a low-temperature co-fired ceramic composite. Through statistical analysis of the data, the inclination angle was identified as an appropriate parameter to describe the polishing result. By using masked data, direct conclusions can be drawn about the leveling of load-bearing surface areas, which are crucial in photolithographic processing steps and bonding technology. A broad discussion of different defects based on the results contributes to a critical analysis of the potentials and obstacles of micromachining of low-temperature cofired ceramic substrates.</p>

Broadband Laser-Induced Luminescence Generated in the Visible and Near-Infrared Ranges from Nontransparent CsPbCl3:Yb3+ Perovskite Ceramics
<p>ABSTRACT</p> <p>All inorganic perovskites with the general formula ABX<sub>3</sub> (A = alkaline cation, B = lead ions, and X = halide anion) in the form of colloids have become very popular in recent years due to their extraordinary spectroscopic properties, which can be additionally modulated by changing their structural composition. Here, we report for the first time a novel study considering nontransparent CsPbCl<sub>3</sub>:10%Yb<sup>3+</sup> ceramics that exhibit broadband laser-induced emission (LIE) with warm color (CRI = 96) upon exposure to a high-power-density infrared beam. It was found that the analyzed phenomenon strongly depends on the excitation power density and the pressure around the sample. Moreover, threshold behavior was observed, characterized by a significant increase in luminescence intensity already from the excitation of 0.2 W. The investigated material exhibits extremely strong photoconductivity. During the spectroscopic measurements of LIE, it was found that the current value varies by more than 4 orders of magnitude. Because of the relatively low sample temperature during the experiment, a LIE generation mechanism based on the creation of ytterbium mixed valence ion pairs and intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) transitions was proposed.</p>
