Data from: Geo-climatic factors drive diatom community distribution in tropical South American freshwaters
1.Patterns that maintain and generate biodiversity of macro-organisms in the Neotropics are widely discussed in the scientific literature, yet the spatial ecology of microorganisms is largely unknown. The unique character of the tropical Andes and adjacent Amazon lowlands generates a wide gradient of environmental conditions to advance our understanding of what drives community assembly and diversity processes. 2.We analyzed the distribution patterns of benthic diatoms (unicellular siliceous algae) as a model group of microbial passive dispersers, including predictors that describe limnological and geo-climatic gradients for a total of 113 waterbodies (0–28ºS and 58–80ºW), including lakes and streams. Complementary multivariate statistical analyses were performed to correlate i) community composition, and ii) diatom species richness with environmental and spatial factors to infer niche-based and dispersal-based assembly processes, respectively. 3.Results showed that two gradients structured both diatom assemblages and waterbodies, namely climate and landscape configuration. Variance partitioning revealed that broad-scale spatial variables (distance-based Moran's Eigenvectors) outperformed the two environmental components (limnological and geo-climatic), suggesting dispersal-assembled communities. However, diatom assemblages were structured by geo-climatic (regional) factors in certain lakes in the northern and central Andes, although their effects were partially manifested via local variables after the geographical distances were factored out. In a similar way, climatic and topographic structuring homogenized lake and stream communities within ecoregions, as indicated by the strong overlap between the two community types and the weak correlation between biota and limnological variables. Notably, a significant increase in diatom species richness was related to increased water connectivity, interpreted to indicate that a decrease in the remoteness of the system increase species number. 4.Synthesis. We emphasize the strength of macroecological gradients (landscape configuration and climatic factors) in affecting both diatom diversity and community composition in the South American tropics. In this context, our results and the commonalities of ecoregion patterning with groups of macroorganisms (vegetation), suggest the need to integrate microbial ecology into a macroecology framework to unravel mechanisms behind diversity gradients.
Developing crown width model for mixed forests using soil, climate, and stand factors
<ol> <li>The tree crown is a useful measure of tree vigor and is highly relevant to a tree's environmental adaptability. Crown allometry depends on environmental and stand conditions. Several studies have focused on the effects of climate change and competitive intensity on the crown, but the regulatory role of soil resources and diversity on crown allometry and carbon allocation has been neglected.</li> <li>Data from 20,994 trees in 232 mixed forests collected between 2011 and 2019 was located near four major mountain ranges in northeast China. The proposed crown width model includes the stand developmental stage, soil, climate, competition intensity, species mixture, species diversity, structural diversity, and their interactions.</li> <li>We observed that the cross-species allometric scaling exponent does not conform to the universal scaling law. Our results showed that crown width increased with increasing soil bulk density, quadratic mean diameter, and coefficient of diameter variation but decreased with increasing de Martonne aridity index, basal area, Simpson index, and species mixture. The interaction of quadratic mean diameter and soil bulk density had a significant negative effect on crown width. The influence of a particular factor within the interaction term on crown width was modulated by the gradients of other factors. Furthermore, soil bulk density contributed more to crown width modeling than the aridity index, and structural diversity had a greater effect on crown width than species diversity.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis</em>. Our results provide new insights into the environmental variability of crown allometry in mixed forests under global change, which is critical for improving regional and global estimates of forest biomass and carbon stocks.</li> </ol>

Data from: Climate matching and anthropogenic factors contribute to the colonisation and extinction of local populations during avian invasions
<p>Concern about the impacts of biological invasions has generated a great deal of interest in understanding factors that determine invasion success. Most of our current knowledge comes from static approaches that use spatial patterns as a proxy of temporal processes. These approaches assume that species are present in areas where environmental conditions are the most favourable. However, this assumption is problematic when applied to dynamic processes such as species expansions when equilibrium has not been reached. In our work, we analyse the roles played by human activities, climatic matching, and spatial connectivity on the two main underlying processes shaping the spread of invasive species (i.e., colonisation and extinction) using a dynamic modelling approach. For this, we used a large dataset that has recorded the occurrence of two invasive bird species -the ring-necked and the monk parakeets- in the Iberian Peninsula from 1991 to 2016. </p>

Spatial and local environmental factors outperform geo-climatic gradients in structuring taxonomically- and traits-based β‐diversity of benthic algae
<p><b>Aim</b>: Understanding the variation in biodiversity and its underlying drivers and mechanisms is a core task in biogeography and ecology. In this study, we examined: i) the relative contributions of species replacement (i.e. turnover) and richness difference (i.e. nestedness) to taxonomically- and traits-based β-diversity of stream benthic algae; ii) whether these two facets of β-diversity are correlated with each other; and iii) the relative contributions of local environmental (e.g. water chemistry, flow velocity, habitat quality), geo-climatic (e.g. land use types, elevation, precipitation), and spatial factors (e.g. using principal coordinates of neighborhood matrices) to the two facets of β-diversity and their components (i.e. total β-diversity, turnover, and nestedness).</p> <p><b>Location</b>: Hun-Tai River Basin, northeastern China</p> <p><b>Taxon</b>: Stream benthic algae</p> <p><b>Methods</b>: A total of 157 sites were sampled. Mantel tests were used to examine the complementarities between the two facets of β-diversity and their components. Distance-based redundancy analysis and variation partitioning were utilized to investigate the relative contributions of local environmental, geo-climatic, and spatial factors to each facet of β-diversity and their components.</p> <p><b>Results</b>: Weak correlations between taxonomically- and traits-based β‐diversity and their components were detected, which indicated complementarity of ecological information. Taxonomically-based total β‐diversity was largely driven by turnover, whereas traits-based total β-diversity was more driven by nestedness. Variation partitioning results indicated that local environmental and spatial factors contributed more than geo-climatic variables to the total explained variation in taxonomically- and traits-based β‐diversity.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions</b>: Our findings highlighted the importance of the different facets of β‐diversity and their decomposition for understanding diversity patterns of benthic algae relative to abiotic factors. A high level of traits-based convergence among benthic algae communities, despite high taxonomic divergence, demonstrated turnover of species with similar biological traits across our study region. Our study provides a traits-based insight into stream benthic algae communities, which was less documented by previous freshwater studies that focused on regions undergoing recovery following human disturbances.</p>
Supplemental information for: Annual tropical-rainforest productivity through two decades: Complex responses to climatic factors, CO2 and storm damage
<p>The supplemental files in this deposition contribute additional information useful for understanding the analyses in the associated manuscript. Two files contain the annual (CARBONO Project measurement-year) data for productivity and for environmental conditions that were analyzed in the paper. The annual productivity metrics were derived from the CARBONO Project litterfall and tree-growth data that were provided and documented in prior Dryad data depositions. A third file in this deposition provides the daily data underlying the analyzed meteorological factors. The fourth file lists the standardized set of 66 test models that were used to test each of the five productivity metrics for environmental responses. The fifth file is an auxiliary table documenting tree mortality by year. The included README file documents the information in these files.</p>
