Measurements of water column depth at 15 minute intervals in Plum Island Sound at the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club, for year 2022. OTT radar level sensor (RLS) installed September 20, 2011 out of the water under the concrete pad on the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club pier, Ipswich, MA. RLS was mounted so that continuous year round measurements can be conducted without the concern of ice flows damaging the sensor.
PIE LTER Year 2022 15-minute interval water quality measurements of water column temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, and depth at four sites in the Plum Island Estuary.
Four YSI EXO2 water quality sondes were deployed from June 2022 to October 2022 at four sites in the Plum Island Estuary. One was at the mouth of the sound at the Ipswich Bay Yacht Club, one in the Rowley River, and two in the Parker River. The sondes measured water column temperature, salinity, oxygen, pH, and depth in 15-minute intervals.

Light profiles in the water column of coastal bays of Virginia 2011-2024
Measurements of light extinction were made from a small boat at designated stations. Measurements were taken above the water (AIR), 10 cm below the surface (SURFACE) and at depths from 25 cm (D_025cm) to 250 cm (D_250cm) below the surface. All light measurements were made with a Licor 4-pi quantum Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) sensor LI-193 and a LI-1000 or LI-250a light meter. All light units are in microEinsteins (moles of photons) Calculations of the extinction coefficient (Kd) should NOT include air measurements.
Single column 1D radiative transfer simulations during PS106 including low-level-stratus clouds in the central Arctic
<p>The collection of datasets published contain the input parameters and output simulations from a single column 1D radiative transfer simulations using the <strong>R</strong>apid <strong>R</strong>adiative <strong>T</strong>ransfer <strong>M</strong>odel for <strong>G</strong>eneral Circulation Model (GCM) applications (RRTMG).</p><p>The data set contains simulations for the PS106 research cruise conducted in 2017 in the Central Arctic. The simulations are based on remote sensing data which were processed with the Cloudnet algorithm to derive cloud macro - and microphyiscal products. The atmospheric profiles of temperature, pressure, and ozone are from ERA5 (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis) and values of surface albedo from CERES (Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System) SYN1deg Ed. 4.1.</p>

Mass of wastes discharged directly from vessels to the water column
<p>Data set of mass discharge of selected pollutants from shipping in the European region. Created in the framework of the project Evaluation, control and Mitigation of the EnviRonmental impacts of shippinG Emissions (EMERGE).</p> <p>To determine the mass of discharged pollutants, AIS-based ship emission modelling of discharge volumes is combined with results of water effluent analysis. For the discharge volumes, the Ship Traffic Emission Assessment Model (STEAM) is used. The total discharge volume of wastes is comprised of five waste streams: open/close scrubber, grey, black and ballast water. For the content of pollutants in the five waste streams, a bibliographic database of waste stream pollutant concentrations compiled during the project is used.</p>

Data for removal kinetics and breakthrough curves of stormwater vehicle-related mobile organic contaminants in geomedia-amended sand columns [Dataset]
<p>This dataset describes the transport and removal of stormwater vehicle-related mobile organic contaminants in geomedia-amended sand columns. The experiments aimed at providing sustainable treatment options for relevant persistent, mobile and toxic (i.e., PMT substances) linked to vehicular traffic pollution. We assessed removal for 1H-benzotriazole, N'N-diphenylguanidine, and hexamethoxymethyl-melamine (PMT precursor) in batch and column experiments using pyrogenic carbonaceous adsorbents (e.g., GAC and biochar). Data contain kinetics batch experiments and breakthrough curves for the target contaminants.</p>
Spatiotemporal variation in internal phosphorus loading, sediment characteristics, water column chemistry, and thermal mixing in a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA (2019-2020)
The primary aim of the data product is to quantify seasonal and spatial variation in sediment phosphorus fluxes in a temperate reservoir and evaluate mechanisms responsible for instances of elevated sediment phosphorus release. We studied Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA, from 2019 to 2020. We measured sediment phosphorus flux rates and potential explanatory variables at three sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir over six sampling events during winter and summer stratification as well as mixing events in the spring, summer, and fall. Ex situ sediment core incubations were used to measure sediment P release rates under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions. Explanatory variables measured included sediment phosphorus chemistry, sediment physical characteristics, epilimnetic and hypolimnetic nutrient concentrations, and thermal stratification patterns. These data will be used to identify mechanisms driving hot spots and hot moments of sediment phosphorus release, which will contribute to our understanding of how areas of lakebed and times of the year can disproportionately influence whole-lake water chemistry.
Measurements of water column depth at 5 minute intervals in West Falmouth Harbor, West Falmouth, MA, 2016-2025
Water level measurements at 5 minute intervals at the West Falmouth Harbor town dock (West Falmouth, MA, USA), collected during the summer sampling season only. Dates vary by year. Pressures were collected from a pair of Onset HOBO U20L sensors, one submerged in a stilling well and one above the water surface, and depths were calculated in Onset's Hoboware Pro using the Barometric Compenation Assistant. Depths were collected relative to the location of the pressure transducer.
Measurements of water column specific conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, temperature, and pH by deployed datasondes every 20 minutes for several periods during the summertime in 2017-2020
West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA) has been experiencing a dramatic increase in nitrogen loading from an upgradient municipal wastewater treatment facility since the early 2000's. As part of a long-term study into the effects of this nitrogen enrichment, we have measured water column parameters at 20 minute intervals in two locations within West Falmouth Harbor (West Falmouth, MA, USA), one in the well-flushed outer basin and one in the inner basin closer to the dominant groundwater N source. The goal of this dataset is to compare conditions at the two sites, as well as to derive rates of metabolism. Parameters measured include temperature, specific conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll, and pH. YSI Datasondes were deployed during 4 periods ranging from 6 to 11 days in July and August, suspended vertically from a surface buoy. Over all deployments, instruments passed all QA checks, and average differences between the two instruments over all deployments were less than 0.06 degrees C (temperature), 0.3 (salinity), 0.05 (pH), 1.0 µg/L (chlorophyll), 1.5 (%DO Saturation). Data provided here are not corrected for drift, and chlorophyll data are uncorrected as reported by the instruments. Chlorophyll reported is uncorrected from the YSI calculation based on in-situ fluorescence and calibration with a single-point using deionized water. Lab fluorometric analysis checks show that the YSI chlorophyll is over-reporting by at least 20% at low concentrations, and high concentrations were not able to be validated. In contrast to temperate systems, Arctic lagoons that span the Alaska Beaufort Sea coast face extreme seasonality. Nine months of ice cover up to ∼1.7 m thick is followed by a spring thaw that introduces an enormous pulse of freshwater, nutrients, and organic matter into these lagoons over a relatively brief 2–3 week period. Prokaryotic communities link these subsidies to lagoon food webs through nutrient uptake, heterotrophic production, and other biogeochemical processes, but little is known about how the genomic capabilities of these communities respond to seasonal variability. This study characterizes the metabolic capabilities of microbial communities across three seasons in two lagoons and one open coastal site along the eastern Alaska Beaufort Sea coast. We used metagenomic DNA sequence data of bacterial and archaeal water column communities to identify genes of relevant biogeochemical pathways. Dissolved inorganic nutrients from CCE LTER process cruises, including 5 macro nutrients from water column bottle sample, 2006 - 2024 (ongoing).
Dissolved inorganic nutrients (phytoplankton macro nutrients) are measured from water column bottle samples from the CCE region (since 2006, ongoing) and include nitrate, nitrite, silicate, phosphate and ammonium. They are analyzed in seawater using a colorimetric assay in which light absorbance is measured versus known standards, and final concentrations are calculated (in µmol/L).
October 2001 water column particulate carbon and nitrogen concentrations for Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER sampling sites
Water samples were collected from the surface and the bottom of the water column at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites and from the surface of the water column during six transect surveys along the Altamaha River in October, 2001. Samples were taken at various times of day and under various tidal conditions. The particulate matter was separated by filtration and analyzed for elemental carbon and nitrogen content by CN analysis. This study was part of the GCE-LTER hydrographic monitoring program, and will be repeated quarterly.
Soil Lake Inundation Moat Experiment (SLIME): Physical, chemical, and biological measurements from planktonic water columns, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (2018-2020)
The Soil Lake Inundation Moat Experiment (SLIME) was developed by the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (MCM LTER) project to investigate the ecological function of lake moats in Antarctica. These moats form during the austral summer when the margins of permanently ice-covered, closed-basin lakes melt, creating open-water zones, or ‘moats,’ between the shoreline and the thick (3-5 m) perennial ice cover. To study these habitats, sampling transects were established on the north and south shores of Lake Fryxell and the East Lobe of Lake Bonney. This data package includes three seasons of physical, chemical, and biological measurements from the planktonic water columns of these lakes, collected from SLIME transects between January 2018 and January 2020. Parameters include water temperature, conductivity, ion and nutrient concentrations, chlorophyll-a concentrations, as well as fluorescence and photochemical efficiencies for major algal classes. NCBI accession numbers are also provided for the microbial sequence data associated with each sample.
