Figure 1. Neighbor-joining tree of selected barcode sequences of Clubiona species from the BOLD database. The Holarctic core Clubiona s. str. is indicated in green, the genevensis group in red. The key features, as discussed in the text, are also found in maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood trees of the same sequences.

Uncertainty and debate in statements describing Wikidata Works of art

This dataset comprises a selection of statements from all artworks in Wikidata.

In particular,

natures.json stores statements with a “Nature of statements” qualifier. Statements, independently of rank, can be decorated with an additional triple using predicate P5102. 54 terms among 283 available may mark the statement as uncertain or debated (e.g. debated, hypothesis, possibly). For example, the painting “Abstract Speed + Sound” (Q19882431) by Giacomo Balla is deemed to be possibly part of a triptych.

non-asserted.json contains those statements which are not asserted. Competing statements are represented via a ranking mechanism (e.g., Preferred, Normal and Deprecated). Individual statements are not actually asserted, but an extra triple is added those that are deemed true. For example, the painting “Madonna with the Blue Diadem” (Q738038) has been attributed to Raphael (non asserted statement, ranked as normal) and Gianfrancesco Penni (asserted statement, ranked as preferred and additionally asserted).

null-valued.json contains all statements with a null-valued objects. A statement can be associated with a blank node. This is meant to imply that the statement is associated with an unknown value, rather than a missing statement. For example, “Missal for the use of the ecclesiastics of Clermont' (Q113302686), an illuminated manuscript from the 14th century, has been recorded with both an unknown creator and author.

sourcing-circumstances.json stores statements with a “Sourcing circumstance” qualifier. As for Natures of statements only statements with an uncertain qualifier have been selected.

Data from: Four myriapod relatives – but who are sisters? No end to debates on relationships among the four major myriapod subgroups

Background: Phylogenetic relationships among the myriapod subgroups Chilopoda, Diplopoda, Symphyla and Pauropoda are still not robustly resolved. The first phylogenomic study covering all subgroups resolved phylogenetic relationships congruently to morphological evidence but is in conflict with most previously published phylogenetic trees based on diverse molecular data. Outgroup choice and long-branch attraction effects were stated as possible explanations for these incongruencies. In this study, we addressed these issues by extending the myriapod and outgroup taxon sampling using transcriptome data.

Results: We generated new transcriptome data of 42 panarthropod species, including all four myriapod subgroups and additional outgroup taxa. Our taxon sampling was complemented by published transcriptome and genome data resulting in a supermatrix covering 59 species. We compiled two data sets, the first with a full coverage of genes per species (292 single-copy protein-coding genes), the second with a less stringent coverage (988 genes). We inferred phylogenetic relationships among myriapods using different data types, tree inference, and quartet computation approaches. Our results unambiguously support monophyletic Mandibulata and Myriapoda. Our analyses clearly showed that there is strong signal for a single unrooted topology, but a sensitivity of the position of the internal root on the choice of outgroups. However, we observe strong evidence for a clade Pauropoda+Symphyla, as well as for a clade Chilopoda+Diplopoda.

Conclusions: Our best quartet topology is incongruent with current morphological phylogenies which were supported in another phylogenomic study. AU tests and quartet mapping reject the quartet topology congruent to trees inferred with morphological characters. Moreover, quartet mapping shows that confounding signal present in the data set is sufficient to explain the weak signal for the quartet topology derived from morphological characters. Although outgroup choice affects results, our study could narrow possible trees to derivatives of a single quartet topology. For highly disputed relationships, we propose to apply a series of tests (AU and quartet mapping), since results of such tests allow to narrow down possible relationships and to rule out confounding signal.

Data from: Resolving a heated debate: the utility of prescribed burning as a management tool for biodiversity on lowland heath

We investigated the impact of prescribed burning and vegetation cutting on a chronisequence of heathland sites (107 in total) in the New Forest National Park, Hampshire, UK. We present data for vegetation cover, canopy active invertebrates collected with sweep nets and ground active invertebrates collected using pitfall traps.

Using a multi-trophic approach, we compared the ecological impact of prescribed burning with two types of vegetation cutting (swiping and baling) as management tools for biodiversity outcomes for up to 20 years after management. Indicators included: Common Standards Monitoring assessment (CSM); vegetation species assemblage; invertebrate biodiversity; and available food resources for two characteristic heathland birds – the Dartford Warbler Sylvia undata and the Nightjar Caprimulgus europaeus. When compared with swiped sites, areas managed by prescribed burning resulted in: better habitat condition (assessed by CSM); higher cover of heathers; lower bracken cover; more areas of bare ground. We found no evidence that burning is detrimental for the investigated components of biodiversity. Cutting by swiping did not replicate the benefits of burning. Swiping supported grassland conditions that suit non-heathland species. Baling resulted in habitat conditions similar to prescribed burning but restricted replication of baled sites limited our conclusions. However, swiped sites supported high invertebrate abundance and diversity, including food resources for Dartford Warbler and Nightjar.
