Proto-Western Kho-Bwa: regionally relevant basic vocabulary elicitation list

<p>This upload contains a pdf and a word file of a 555-entry word list that was used to elicit data from eight Western Kho-Bwa varieties (Khispi, Duhumbi, Khoina, Khoitam, Jerigaon, Rahung, Rupa and Shergaon), Bangru, Brokpa and Tshangla in Western and Central&nbsp;Arunachal Pradesh between March 2012 and November 2018.&nbsp;</p> <p>The word list contains concepts that are also found in the most commonly used lists for vocabulary elicitation, but also contains regionally relevant concepts, for example, those related to flora and fauna, local livelihood practices and agricultural crops, and cultural and religious concepts. The word list is partially translated in Roman Hindi to ease elicitation with Hindi-speaking consultants, but certain concepts for which Hindi equivalents could not be found have been translated into Tshangla, the erstwhile lingua franca in some areas and a language still spoken by the older generation.</p> <p>This material is made freely available to everyone for informative or scientific purposes as long as the source (this DOI) / the collectors are properly credited. Data from: Convergent shifts in host-associated microbial communities across environmentally elicited phenotypes

Morphological plasticity is a genotype-by-environment interaction that enables organisms to increase fitness across varying environments. Symbioses with diverse microbiota may aid in acclimating to this variation, but whether the associated bacteria community is phenotype-specific remains unstudied. Here we induce morphological plasticity in three species of sea urchins and measure changes in the associated bacterial community. While each host species had unique microbial communities, the expression of morphological plasticity resulted in the convergence for a phenotype-specific microbiome that was, in part, driven by differentially associating with α- and γ-proteobacteria. Furthermore, these results suggest that phenotype-specific signatures were the product of the environment, and are correlated with ingestive and digestive structures. By manipulating diet quantity over time, we also support that differentially associating with microbiota along a phenotypic continuum is bidirectional. Taken together, our data support the idea of a phenotype-specific microbial community and that phenotypic plasticity extends beyond a genotype-by-environment interaction.

Immunization with full-length Plasmodium falciparum merozoite surface protein 1 is safe and elicits functional cytophilic antibodies in a randomized first-in-human trial

<p>This file contains the original data underpinning the article in npj vaccines, in which we describe a phase 1 safety and immunogenicty study on the malaria vaccine candidate MSP1 in humans. The abstract of the article follows:</p> <p>A vaccine remains a priority in the global fight against malaria. Here, we report on a single-center, randomized, double-blind, placebo and adjuvant-controlled, dose escalation phase 1a safety and immunogenicity clinical trial of full-length <i>Plasmodium falciparum</i> merozoite surface protein 1 (MSP1) in combination with GLA-SE adjuvant. 32 healthy volunteers were vaccinated at least three times with MSP1 plus adjuvant, adjuvant alone or placebo (24:4:4) to evaluate the safety and immunogenicity. MSP1 was safe, well tolerated and immunogenic, with all vaccinees sero-converting independent of the dose. The MSP1-specific IgG and IgM titers persisted above levels found in malaria semi-immune humans for at least six months after the last immunization. The antibodies were variant- and strain-transcending and stimulated respiratory activity in granulocytes. Furthermore, full-length MSP1 induced memory T-cells. Our findings encourage challenge studies as the next step to evaluate the efficacy of full-length MSP1 as a vaccine candidate against falciparum malaria (EudraCT 2016-002463-33).</p>

<p>This data was used to investigate how the age and size of beaver disturbances act as predictors for primary wood-boring beetle abundance and species richness around beaver-altered habitat patches. To do so, we sampled beetles around 16 beaver-disturbed and unaltered watercourses within the Kouchibouguac National Park (Canada) and modeled beetle demographical responses to site conditions and their physical characteristics, distance from the watercourse, deadwood biomass, and the geographical location of the sites.</p>

Data from: Thyroid hormone tinkering elicits integrated phenotypic changes potentially explaining rapid adaptation of color vision in cichlid fish

Vision is critical for most vertebrates, including fish. One challenge that aquatic habitats pose is the high variability in spectral properties depending on depth, turbidity and composition of the water body. By altering opsin gene expression and chromophore usage, cichlid fish modulate visual sensitivities to maximize sensory input from the available light in their respective habitat. Thyroid hormone (TH) has been proposed to play a role in governing adaptive diversification in visual sensitivity in Nicaraguan Midas cichlids, which evolved in less than ~3,100 generations. As suggested by indirect measurements of TH levels (i.e., expression of deiodinases), populations adapted to short wavelength light in clear lakes have lower TH levels than ones inhabiting turbid lakes enriched in long-wavelength light. We experimentally manipulated TH levels by exposing two-week-old Midas cichlids to exogenous TH or a TH-inhibitor and measured opsin gene expression and chromophore usage (via cyp27c1 expression). Whereas exogenous TH induces long-wavelength sensitivity by changing opsin gene expression and chromophore usage in a concerted manner, TH-inhibited fish exhibit a visual phenotype with sensitivities shifted to shorter-wavelengths. Tinkering with TH levels in eyes results in concerted phenotypic changes that can provide a rapid mechanism of adaptation to novel light environments. --

<p>This zipped folder contains PDF and PSD files of our translation of the DiapixUK picture materials by Baker &amp; Hazan (2011) - adapted to elicit tense vowels in German (DiapixGEtv).</p> <p>For our purpose we only modified the written information when making adjustments to the original DiapixUK versions of the files. Our aim was to include as many tense vowels [i:, e:, a:, o:, u:] as possible while remaining subtle enough so as not to alert the participants to our research focus . Supplementary Material for Use of Journey Maps and Personas in Software Requirements Elicitation

<p>This repository contains supplementary material for the &quot;Use of Journey Maps and Personas in Software Requirements Elicitation&quot; article.</p> <p>Context: Requirements elicitation is a fundamental step in a software development process since it is at this stage that the software begins to be designed. In some situations, the problems related to the failure of the software development project are due to an incomplete requirements elicitation, resulting in solutions that do not understand all the necessary functionalities or do not incorporate innovation. Despite the various techniques offered by Requirements Engineering, situations such as the growing application market and the need for innovation further increase the importance of understanding the user&#39;s different needs. Objective: In this paper, we investigated how the journey map and personas techniques are being used in requirements elicitation in both the literature and the industry, along with the advantages, disadvantages, and challenges of using these techniques. Method: We conducted systematic literature review to identify the personas and journey map techniques used in requirements elicitation in the literature and industry. In addition, we conducted a survey with 27 practitioners (software developers, users, and managers) to investigate their perceptions of the use of journeys map and personas techniques in the requirements elicitation phase. Results: Twenty-three primary studies were identified that address journey map and personas techniques in software requirements elicitation. In addition, most respondents stated that using these techniques facilitates understanding the requirements, providing better integration, collaboration, and leveling of knowledge among the members of the software development teams. Conclusions: Our findings allow us to conclude that most of the software developers, users, and managers that participated in the survey consider that the journey map and personas techniques are effective in helping understand the software requirements to be developed by the development teams.</p>

Silk-borne chemicals of spider nuptial gifts elicit female gift acceptance

<p>Chemical communication is important in a reproductive context by conveying information used for mate recognition and/or assessment during courtship and mating. Spider silk is common as vehicle for chemical communication between the sexes. However, despite being well described in females, male silk-borne chemicals remain largely unexplored. Males of the spider Pisaura mirabilis silk-wrap prey (i.e. nuptial gifts) that is offered to females during courtship and eaten by the female during copulation. Interestingly, rejected males often add more silk to their gift which leads to mate acceptance, suggesting presence of silk-borne chemicals that facilitate female gift acceptance. To test this hypothesis, we offered females standardised gifts covered with male silk that was either washed in solvents or unwashed, respectively to remove or not any chemically active components. We scored female gift acceptance, and as expected in the case chemicals that mediate female mating behaviour are present in male silk, females were more likely to accept gifts covered with unwashed silk. Our findings suggest that silk-borne chemicals of nuptial gifts prime female responses, potentially signalling male quality or manipulating females into mating beyond their interests given the occurrence of male cheating behaviour via nutritionally worthless gifts in this system.</p>

Data from: Functionally redundant multimodal predator cues elicit changes in prey foraging behavior

<p><span>Many prey species can assess the risk of predation from information acquired through different sensory systems. For many animals, this information is detected with sensory organs specialized for visual (sight) or chemical (smell or taste) stimuli. It is unclear, however, whether information acquired through multiple sensory systems is functionally redundant or interchangeable, especially if the message is the same. Here we assess prey response to unimodal visual and chemical cues as well as multimodal (visual + chemical) cues. We specifically test if a foraging individual shows a stronger behavioral response to risk when they can perceive that risk through multimodal versus unimodal cues.  To do this, we measured the functional response (prey abundance-foraging rate relationship) of Tibellus oblongus spiders foraging on midges while exposing them to visual stimuli, chemical stimuli, or a combination of both visual and chemical stimuli from potential predators. We then determined if the spider's functional response for the multimodal treatment differed more strongly from a control treatment than from either unimodal treatment. We found that under any simulated predation risk (multimodal and both unimodal), T. oblongus spiders showed longer handling times than in control groups without risk. </span><span>However, we saw no elevated anti-predator response in the multimodal treatment, suggesting that information from visual and chemical modalities is interchangeable and sufficient to indicate reliably predation risk. </span></p>

Data from: 2-D sex images elicit mate copying in fruit flies

<p><span>Although the environment is three-dimensional (3-D), humans are able to extract subtle information from two-dimensional (2-D) images, particularly in the domain of sex. However, whether animals with simpler nervous systems are capable of such information extraction remains to be demonstrated, as this ability would suggest a functional generalisation capacity. </span><span>Here, we performed mate-copying experiments in <em>Drosophila</em> <em>melanogaster</em> using 2-D artificial stimuli. Mate copying occurs when naïve females observe the mating success of potential mates and use that social information to build their own mating preference. By replacing live demonstrations with (i) photos or (ii) simplified images of copulating pairs, we found that even crudely simplified images of sexual intercourse still elicit mate copying, suggesting that <em>Drosophila</em> is able to extract sex-related information even from a degraded image. This new method </span><span>constitutes a powerful tool to further investigate mate copying in that species and sexual preferences in general.</span></p>

Strategies, Benefits and Challenges App Store-inspired Requirements Elicitation - Supplementary Material

<p>This is the supplementary material for the paper &quot;Strategies, Benefits and Challenges App Store-inspired Requirements Elicitation&quot; (also included in this repository).&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract: App store-inspired elicitation is the practice of exploring competitors&rsquo; apps, to get inspiration for requirements. This activity is common among developers, but little insight is available on its practical use, advantages, and possible issues. This paper aims to study strategies, benefits, and challenges of app store-inspired elicitation, and compare this technique with more traditional requirements elicitation interviews. We conduct an experimental simulation with 58 analysts and collect qualitative data. Our results show that specific guidelines and procedures are required to better conduct app store-inspired elicitation. Furthermore, current search features made available by app stores are not suitable for this practice, and more tool support is required to help analysts in the retrieval and<br> evaluation of competing products. While interviews focus on the why dimension of requirements engineering (i.e., goals), app store-inspired elicitation focuses on how (i.e., solutions), offering indications for implementation and improved usability.
