SST_front_data: ocean thermal fronts detected by the Cayula and Cornillon SIED algorithm

<p>This dataset includes the post-processed data and a demo MATLAB script&nbsp;used for the paper titled &quot;Global trends of fronts and chlorophyll in a warming ocean&quot;</p> <p><strong>SST_FRONT_data.zip</strong> contains maps of sea surface temperature (SST) fronts detected by the Cayula and Cornillon single image edge detection algorithm over global ocean warming hotspot regions and covering the period 2003-2020. Atmospheric deposition across a Colorado Front Range elevation transect, monthly, 2017-2018

In this dataset, we present seasonal dust fluxes and composition from a Colorado Front Range elevation transect of nine sites extending from the developed plains to the alpine wilderness. From the beginning of November 2017 through the end of November 2018, we collected monthly bulk deposition samples and analyzed them for dust mass fluxes, particulate matter chemistry, and liquid fraction chemistry. Niwot Ridge sites were in operation from June 2018 through September 2018 and are a critical component of this collaboration with the Boulder Creek Critical Zone Observatory, which funded the lower elevation sites. These dust deposition data address open questions about the spatial and temporal variability of dust fluxes and composition across complex mountainous terrain.

Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 11: 70. doi: 10.3389/fnhum.2017.00070</p> <p><strong>Brief description of dataset:</strong></p> <p>The stimulus was presented on a TFT monitor (size: 41,8&deg; x 24,3&deg;) 52 cm in front of the participants in a dark, sound attenuated and electrically shielded room. During the experiment EEG was recorded continuously. We used 64 Ag/AgCl active electrodes located according to the extended international 10-20 system.&nbsp;</p> <p>The numerosity stimulus consisted of a continuously displayed black fixation target in the center of the gray screen. Additionally in each trial either one, two or three circular white patches were shown 200 ms after trial onset. These were presented for a random duration between 400 ms and 500 ms either in the left or right visual field. Two different types of patches were presented: i) the radius of the patches had the same value (0.65&deg;) and therefore the patch size was the same (&ldquo;SizeCon&rdquo;) ii) the total area of the patches was conserved which resulted in the same total luminance independent of the number of patches (&ldquo;LumCon&rdquo;). After a random time between 400 ms and 700 ms after stimulus offset the trials ended.</p> <p>In this study we conducted an oddball experiment with an oddball-ratio of 1:4. In each block consisting of 30 trials a standard-amount of patches (one, two or three) was presented in 80% of all trials (24 trials). The two remaining quantities of patches were shown in 10% (3 trials) of the trials each. This presentation scheme allowed us to compare trials with identical physical properties because each amount of patches served as deviant and standard trial in different blocks. Attention of the participants was drawn off the white patches by a demanding detection task at the fixation target. A total number of 432 blocks consisting of 30 trials was presented to each of the 10 participants.</p> <p>EEG data were evaluated offline. The mastoids (TP9 and TP10) were chosen as new reference. A second-order, zero phase shift Butterworth filter with cutoff frequencies 0.5 and 40 Hz was applied to the continuously recorded data before it was sliced in individual trials that had a time range from 200 ms before to 500 ms after stimulus onset. A baseline correction was performed using with the signals from -110 ms to 0 ms. As a last step trials with eye movement artifacts or electrode signals that exceeded a difference of &plusmn;100 &micro;V within an interval of 100 ms were excluded in an artifact rejection step.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Multiple timescales of streambed flux variability in two perennial mountain-front streams

<p>Streambed fluxes are highly variable through time and space, having a range of implications for stream‐aquifer processes. This study investigated streambed fluxes over a 3‐year study period to characterize short‐ and long‐term variations and related implications for seepage recharge and hyporheic exchange. Time series of streambed fluxes were estimated through Darcy‐based methods using water level and temperature inputs from shallow (&lt;1.5 m) nested streambed piezometers installed in two mountain‐front streams in Colorado, USA. Three predominant temporal scales of variability were characterized: sub‐daily (&lt;1 day), daily (&gt;1 day; &lt;1 year), and interannual (&gt;1 year). Temporal variability was quantified using the median absolute deviation (MAD), a statistical measure that is resistant to extreme values associated with short‐duration events. Sub‐daily variability (MADS‐D) was related to ET, temperature‐induced changes in hydraulic conductivity, and variable stream stage, and was quantified using the MAD of detrended fluxes (daily mean subtracted). Daily variability (MADD), calculated as the MAD of daily median fluxes for a given year, exceeded sub‐daily variability, and was influenced by strong seasonality at some sites. For individual sites and water years, the ratio of MADS‐D to MADD ranged from 0.03 to 0.70, with an average of 0.25. Annual median fluxes at each site varied across years, but typically remained consistent in order of magnitude and direction. Results reveal a strong linear correlation between the daily variability and the median annual flux at individual sites. Within a year, summer months characterized by stronger losing conditions showed greater overall variability. 1D numerical heat and flow modelling was performed to calibrate hydraulic parameters and to investigate temperature‐related controls for sub‐daily variations. We discuss implications of documented temporal variability for analyses of hyporheic exchange and groundwater recharge. Results provide a basis for quantifying temporal variations in streambed fluxes and highlight the extent to which fluxes vary over multiple timescales.</p>

Cranes soar on thermal updrafts behind cold fronts as they migrate across the sea

<p>Thermal soaring conditions above the sea have long been assumed absent or too weak for terrestrial migrating birds, forcing large obligate soarers to take long detours and avoid sea crossing, and facultative soarers to cross exclusively by costly flapping flight. Thus, while atmospheric convection does develop at sea and is utilized by some seabirds, it has been largely ignored in avian migration research. Here we provide direct evidence for routine thermal soaring over open sea in the common crane, the heaviest facultative soarer known among terrestrial migrating birds. Using high-resolution biologging from 44 cranes tracked across their transcontinental migration over 4 years, we show that soaring characteristics and performance were no different over sea than over land in mid-latitudes. Sea-soaring occurred predominantly in autumn when large water-air temperature difference followed mid-latitude cyclones. Our findings challenge a fundamental paradigm in avian migration research and suggest that large soaring migrants avoid sea crossing not due to absence or weakness of thermals but due to their uncertainty and the costs of prolonged flapping. Marine cold air outbreaks, imperative to the global energy budget and climate system, may also be important for bird migration, calling for more multidisciplinary research across biological and atmospheric sciences.</p>
