1. Rising demands for agricultural products and high environmental costs of intensive agriculture reinforce the need for ecological replacements in agricultural management. In Europe, agri-environmental schemes (AES) are implemented to enhance species richness and provision of ecosystem services, but the effectiveness of different AES types and the spatial extent of possible beneficial effects are little understood. In this study we assessed the effects of different AES types on diversity, species traits and distance-decay functions of ground- dwelling predators in adjacent crop fields. 2. On 31 study sites with winter oilseed rape (OSR) adjacent to four types of AES differing in management intensity and habitat age we recorded ground-dwelling predators (carabid beetles, staphylinid beetles and spiders) during OSR growth from April to July. Effects of the AES on species richness, activity densities and different traits of these taxa were examined with transects of pitfall traps running along a continuous distance gradient from the AES across the habitat border into the OSR fields. 3. Ground-dwelling predator communities benefitted similarly from the different AES types. In adjacent OSR, activity densities, carabid species richness and the proportion of predatory carabid beetles declined from the field edge while mean body size increased. Adjacent AES increased the proportion of predatory species and simultaneously decreased the proportion of granivorous or frugivorous species in adjacent OSR fields. 4. Synthesis and applications. Our results indicate a beneficial effect of adjacent agri-environmental schemes (AES) on ground-dwelling predators in oilseed rape (OSR), mostly irrespective of AES type and therefore management intensity and habitat age. The short-ranged distance decay effects on natural enemies in OSR underpin that a strategic spatial placement of AES in agricultural landscapes is required to maximise biological pest control. This could help replace anthropogenic input in modern agriculture and secure adequate yields.
Data from: Using plant functional distances to select species for restoration of mining sites
1. Plant facilitation, an ecological interaction that benefits at least one species without harming the other, is increasingly used as a restoration tool. To restore degraded habitats under a facilitation framework, practitioners must correctly select both the benefactor (nurse) and the beneficiary (facilitated) species. 2. Based on community assembly and species coexistence theory, we propose selecting plant species that largely differ in a suite of functional traits so that competition is minimized and facilitation maximized due to functional complementarity. To apply this guideline in a pilot restoration experiment performed in metalliferous mine tailings in South-Eastern Spain, we first built the plant-plant facilitative interaction network naturally occurring in a set of 12 tailings. After characterizing each species with 20 morphological and physiological traits, we verified that facilitative interactions were predominantly established between functionally distant species. 3. Then, we designed a sowing experiment combining 50 nurse-facilitated species pairs separated by a wide range of functional distances. The success of seedling establishment significantly increased with the functional distance between the nurse and the facilitated plant species. 4. Synthesis and applications. We encourage to use ecological facilitation together with trait-based species selection to design restoration programmes based on the principle of increasing functional distance between target species. This method may not only promote the restoration of the plant cover but also impact paramount ecosystem functions, thus being an efficient low cost restoration practice in abiotically stressful ecosystems.

The phylogeny and function of gut microbiota associated with host geographic/genetic distance and biological characteristics (data S1)
<p>Symbiotic microbiomes play important roles in hosts' adaptation and evolution. Here, the gut bacterial communities in <i>Cephalcia chuxiongica</i>, a key pest of pines in China, were studied for the first time by using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. The composition of gut bacterial communities differed in different <i>C. chuxiongica</i> geographic populations, while the various microbes performed similar functions, suggesting some kinds of functional complementation. The predicted functional profiles of microbes indicated that most of identified KEGG Pathways were shared by different populations, in which metabolism was the most dominant functional pathway. Moreover, the function of major microbes associated with host dietary specialization (pine needles), such as cellulose degradation. All samples contained abundant <i>Wolbachia</i>, which may play important roles on the parthenogenesis of <i>C</i><i>.</i><i> chuxiongica</i>. The high abundances of <i>Serratia</i> and <i>Sphingomonas </i>in samples suggest that gut microbiota may crucial for the long-term larval diapause in <i>C. chuxiongica</i><i>. </i>Interestingly, this study found that the phylogeny and diversity of gut microbiota correlated to host geographic/genetic distance, i.e., the microbiota<i> </i>was more similar as the geographic/genetic distance decreased, and vice versa. Therefore, the synergy of environmental and host factors appears to be the main force shaping the structure and variability of gut microbiota and likewise, gut microbiota may exert a significant effect on its host by shaping host biological characters, suggesting some kinds of extraordinary symbiosis and coevolution. These results demonstrate the important contribution of gut microbiota and provide a sound foundation for developing control strategies for this pest.</p>
