Gamma-ray picture book.

A set of plots related to gamma-ray and hadron initated air showers.

Note that this is a rather random selection of plots and prepared a long time ago (in 2005).

gamma_picturebook.pdf gives an overview of typical distributions important for ground-based gamma-ray astronomy. Additional distributions can be found in the folder shower-distributions.

VTSCat: The VERITAS Catalog of Gamma-Ray Observations

VTSCat is the catalog of high-level data products from all publications of the VERITAS collaboration.

Most recent versions of VTSCat are available through https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6988967

The VTSCat data collection contains:

high-level data like spectral flux points, light curves, spectral fits in human- and machine-readable yaml and ecsv file format

tabled data like upper limits tables from dark matter searches or results on the extragalactic background in ecsv file format

sky maps (wherever available) in FITS file format

The data collection contains results from gamma-ray measurements only. This is a pre-release for testing and early publications.

A forthcoming research note will provide more details on the catalog. Please check the README file and all documentation linked to the README.

VTSCat supplements the HEASARC catalogue of VERITAS results (to be published). VTSCat is inspired and derived from gamma-cat.

If you are a previous VERITAS author and would like to be associated with this repository, please send an email to G. IODP Expedition 379 Natural gamma radiation

Natural gamma radiation (NGR) data in the ~0.1 to 3.0 MeV range were measured using eight custom-designed sodium iodide (thallium) [NaI(Tl)] detectors arranged along the core measurement axis at 20 cm intervals. The NGR system uses layers of passive shielding (lead) and active shielding (plastic scintillators and coincidence electronics) to reduce the cosmic-ray signal for low-count analysis of sediment core sections and to obtain the maximum signal-to-noise ratio. Data are reported on a total counts per second basis and the raw spectral files are available as compressed files for later analysis.

GAMMA: Galactic Attributes of Mass, Metallicity, and Age Dataset

We introduce the GAMMA (Galactic Attributes of Mass, Metallicity, and Age) dataset, a comprehensive collection of galaxy data tailored for Machine Learning applications. This dataset offers detailed 2D maps and 3D cubes of 11 727 galaxies, capturing essential attributes: stellar age, metallicity, and mass.

Together with the dataset we publish our code to extract any other stellar or gaseous property from the raw simulation suite to extend the dataset beyond these initial properties, ensuring versatility for various computational tasks. Ideal for feature extraction, clustering, and regression tasks, GAMMA offers a unique lens for exploring galactic structures through computational methods and is a bridge between astrophysical simulations and the field of scientific machine learning (ML).

As a first benchmark, we apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) on this dataset. We find that PCA effectively captures the key morphological features of galaxies with a small number of components. We achieve a dimensionality reduction by a factor of ∼200 (∼3650) for 2D images (3D cubes) with a reconstruction accuracy below 5%.

We calculate UMAP (Uniform Manifold Approximation and Projection for Dimension Reduction) on the lower dimensional PCA scores of the 2D images to visualize the image space. An interactive version of this plot can be accessed using an online Dashboard (hover over a point to see the galaxy image and the IllustrisTNG Subhalo ID).

All the code to generate this dataset and load the data structure is publicly available on GitHub, with an additional documentation page hosted on ReadTheDocs.

IODP Expedition 368X Natural gamma radiation
