A Modified Global Plate Model Including Quantitative Tomotectonic Plate Reconstruction of Western North America and the Eastern Pacific Basin

<p>This plate model is based on that of Clennett et al. (2020) (<a href="../records/10348271" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://zenodo.org/records/10348271</a>). The Clennett et al. (2020) model was an extension of the global model of M&uuml;ller et al. (2019) (<a href="../records/10525287" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://zenodo.org/records/10525287</a>), with a focus on producing a more detailed tectonic reconstruction of the North American Cordillera. Further minor modifications were made to the model for a paper by Alfonso et al. (2024), using the <em>GPlates</em> software (<a href="https://url.au.m.mimecastprotect.com/s/JVvZCE8wmrt1kqgwPtNcn8j?domain=gplates.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">https://www.gplates.org/</a>). Firstly,&nbsp;several subduction zones in the published plate model have no associated motions, instead remaining entirely stationary relative to the mantle. This was judged to be incompatible with basic geodynamic principles, as geodynamic models indicate that trenches and subducting slabs are almost always in motion relative to the mantle, exhibiting retreat or, more rarely, advance (e.g. Capitanio, 2013; Capitanio et al., 2010; Schellart et al., 2007; Stegman et al., 2010). As trenches of intermediate length generally display relatively slow retreat (Schellart, 2008), a small amount of trench rollback was imposed on the subduction zones in this model, whilst ensuring that they remained located above their associated tomographically-imaged slabs. Additionally, the Orcas plate (170&ndash;130 Ma), located within the Cordilleran archipelago, was split into two sections separated by an east-west trending mid-ocean ridge, consistent with the subsequent plate configuration after 130 Ma. This was done to improve the consistency of the plate motion model, which appeared to indicate divergence within the Orcas plate and convergence at its boundaries. Finally, the reconstruction&rsquo;s absolute plate motion model was recalculated using the iterative optimisation workflow developed by Tetley et al. NACP MsTMIP: Global and North American Driver Data for Multi-Model Intercomparison

This data set provides environmental data that have been standardized and aggregated for use as input to carbon cycle models at global (0.5-degree resolution) and regional (North America at 0.25-degree resolution) scales. The data were compiled from selected sources (Table 2) and integrated into gridded global and regional collections of climatology variables (precipitation, air temperature, air specific humidity, air relative humidity (NA only), pressure, downward longwave radiation, downward shortwave radiation, and wind speed), time-varying atmospheric CO2 concentrations, time-varying nitrogen deposition, biome fraction and type, land-use and land-cover change, C3/C4 grasses fractions, major crop distribution, phenology, multiple soil characteristics, and a land-water mask. The temporal ranges of the data are sufficient for carbon cycle model simulations from 1801 to 2010. These data were compiled specifically for the North American Carbon Program (NACP) Multi-Scale Synthesis and Terrestrial Model Intercomparison Project (MsTMIP) as the prescribed model input driver data (Huntzinger et al., 2013). The driver data were used by 22 terrestrial biosphere models to run baseline and sensitivity simulations. The standardized data provided consistent model inputs to minimize the inter-model variability caused by differences in environmental drivers and initial conditions. Together with the sensitivity simulations, the standardized input data enable better interpretation and quantification of structural and parameter uncertainties of model estimates. Data are provided in Climate and Forecast (CF) metadata convention compliant (version 1.4) netCDF-4 file formats. There are 3,152 *.nc4 data files with this data set.

The NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments ([MEaSUREs](https://earthdata.nasa.gov/about/competitive-programs/measures)) Global Food Security-support Analysis Data (GFSAD) data product provides cropland extent data over Southeast and Northeast Asia for nominal year 2015 at 30 meter resolution (GFSAD30SEACE). The monitoring of global cropland extent is critical for policymaking and provides important baseline data that are used in many agricultural cropland studies pertaining to water sustainability and food security. The GFSAD30SEACE data product uses the pixel-based supervised classifiers, Random Forest (RF), to retrieve cropland extent from a combination of Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), and elevation derived from the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) Version 3 data products. Each GFSAD30SEACE GeoTIFF file contains a cropland extent layer that defines areas of cropland, non-cropland, and water bodies over a 10° by 10° area.Known Issues* Certain small islands in the Pacific are not classified and therefore data for these areas are not provided.* Additional known issues, including constraints and limitations, are provided on page 19 of the ATBD.
