<p>The multilevel hidden Markov model (MHMM) is a promising vehicle to investigate latent dynamics over time in social and behavioral processes. By including continuous individual random effects, the model accommodates variability between individuals, providing individual-specific trajectories and facilitating the study of individual differences. However, the performance of the MHMM has not been sufficiently explored. Currently, there are no practical guidelines on the sample size needed to obtain reliable estimates related to categorical data characteristics We performed an extensive simulation to assess the effect of the number of dependent variables (1-4), the number of individuals (5-90), and the number of observations per individual (100-1600) on the estimation performance of group-level parameters and between-individual variability on a Bayesian MHMM with categorical data of various levels of complexity. We found that using multivariate data generally alleviates the sample size needed and improves the stability of the results. Regarding the estimation of group-level parameters, the number of individuals and observations largely compensate for each other. Meanwhile, only the former drives the estimation of between-individual variability. We conclude with guidelines on the sample size necessary based on the complexity of the data and the study objectives of the practitioners.</p> <p>This repository contains data generated for the manuscript: "Go multivariate: a Monte Carlo study of a multilevel hidden Markov model with categorical data of varying complexity". It comprehends: (1) model outputs (maximum a posteriori estimates) for each repetition (n=100) of each scenario (n=324) of the main simulation, (2) complete model outputs (including estimates for 4000 MCMC iterations) for two chains of each repetition (n=3) of each scenario (n=324). Please note that the empirical data used in the manuscript is not available as part of this repository. A subsample of the data used in the empirical example are openly available as an example data set in the R package <a href="https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/mHMMbayes/index.html">mHMMbayes on CRAN</a>. The full data set is available on request from the authors.</p>
Where did the finch go? Insights from radio telemetry of the medium ground finch (Geospiza fortis)
<p><span>Movement patterns and habitat selection of animals have important implications for ecology and evolution. Darwin's finches are a classic model system for ecological and evolutionary studies, yet their spatial ecology remains poorly studied. We tagged and radio-tracked five (three females, two males) medium ground finches (<em>Geospiza fortis</em>) to examine the feasibility of telemetry for understanding their movement and habitat use. Based on 143 locations collected during a three-week period, we analysed, for the first time, home-range size and habitat selection patterns of finches at El Garrapatero, an arid coastal ecosystem on Santa Cruz Island (Galápagos). The average 95% home range and 50% core area for <em>G. fortis</em> in the breeding season were 20.54 ha ± 4.04 ha SE and 4.03 ha ± 1.11 ha SE, respectively. For most of the finches, their home range covered a diverse set of habitats. Three finches positively selected the dry-forest habitat, while the other habitats seemed to be either negatively selected or simply neglected by the finches. In addition, we noted a communal roosting behaviour in an area close to the ocean, where the vegetation is greener and denser than the more inland dry-forest vegetation. We show that telemetry on Darwin's finches provides valuable data to understand the movement ecology of the species. Based on our results, we propose a series of questions about the ecology and evolution of Darwin's finches that can be addressed using telemetry.</span></p>
Self-medication for anxiety symptoms in the context of COVID-19, in users who go to a drugstore in Los Olivos, Lima-2021
<p><strong>Background:</strong> To determine the relationship between self-medication and anxiety symptoms in the context of COVID-19, in users who go to a drugstore in Los Olivos, Lima 2021.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> The research method was deductive, basic and with a quantitative approach; the design used was non-experimental, descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional, and prospective. Spearman's Rho analysis was performed to validate the hypothesis.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> 384 users were evaluated, finding 93.5% aged 18-59 years, of whom 53.4% were female, 42.7% had completed high school, 57.8% were single and 51.6% presented physical symptoms, preferably muscular tension accompanied by pain, 60.7% presented behavioral symptoms, highlighting unusual sadness in the face of COVID-19 and 70.1% presented cognitive symptoms with greater frequency of concern about contracting COVID-19. In addition, the greater the symptoms of anxiety, the higher the self-medication increased from 9.0% to 21.1%, a similar case was evidenced in self-medication on their own initiative where the increase was from 7.5% to 33.3%; likewise, self-medication without medical prescription increased from 15.8% to 47.7%, the consumption of anxiolytics or antidepressants increased from 0.8% to 26.3% caused by the symptoms of anxiety.</p> <p><strong>Conclusion:</strong> It was determined that there is a moderate relationship between self-medication and anxiety symptoms in the context of COVID-19, in users who go to a drugstore in Los Olivos, Lima 2021.</p> <p><strong>Keywords:</strong> Self-medication, prescription, anxiety, depression, COVID-19.</p> <p><strong>Background:</strong> To determine the relationship between self-medication and anxiety symptoms in the context of COVID-19, in users who go to a drugstore in Los Olivos, Lima 2021.</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> The research method was deductive, basic and with a quantitative approach; the design used was non-experimental, descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional, and prospective. <h1>Description</h1> <p>This repository contains a comprehensive dataset focused on soil organic carbon and its role in mitigating climate change through carbon sequestration on agricultural lands in Rio Verde, GO, Brazil. With the global imperative to reduce anthropogenic CO2 emissions, our data highlights the effectiveness of no-till agricultural practices in both improving soil quality and enhancing carbon storage. This collection represents extensive soil and biomass sampling from five distinct areas within the Cerrado region, utilizing three priority management systems:</p> <p>No-till with soybean and maize in sequence under rainfed conditions. No-till with soybean and maize in sequence with central pivot irrigation. First and second cuts of sugarcane. The samples were meticulously collected post-harvest and used to estimate both soil biomass accumulation and carbon stock indices. A thorough analysis of the soil's physicochemical parameters was conducted for the 0-20 cm soil profile in each area. Data from: Stay or go? Changing breeding conditions affect sexual difference in colony attendance strategies of Atlantic puffins Fratercula arctica
<p>Male and female birds have different interests in reproductive investment, which in turn may increase negative effects of poorer breeding conditions caused by e.g., climate change or ecosystem regime shifts. Using a 33-year time series with resightings of Atlantic puffins <em>Fratercula arctica</em> individually colour-ringed as breeders in previous years, we show that the difference in colony attendance of male and female birds depends on the environmental conditions for raising young, proxied by the average duration of the chick period and size of the herring <em>Clupea harengus </em>fed to the chicks in the colony each year. The longer the chick period, and thus the birds' overall investment in reproduction, the more was the sex ratio of adults sitting out on the colony surface biased in favour of males. An increase in herring size, indicating better feeding conditions for raising chicks, led to more observations of both sexes, and the increase was slightly more prominent for females than males. We discuss the results in relation to general life-history theory on sexual differences in trade-offs between individual investment in breeding and own survival. Our results suggest that females are increasingly more willing than males to invest in provisioning for the chick the longer the chick needs such care. This difference may also prove valuable as an indication of breeding conditions from only a short visit to a colony with colour-ringed birds of known sex.</p>
