Supporting Data:A pleiotropic 'stretch' phenotype is associated with metaxylem vessel element length, axial hydraulic conductance, root elongation, water utilization, and drought adaptation in maize.

<p>These data were collected&nbsp;to assess how xylem perforation plates affect water use strategies in maize (<em>Zea mays </em>L.) under water deficit through empirical studies in controlled environments and in the field. In this work, our goals were to explore the extent of intraspecific variation for the structure of perforation plates within an annual monocot and assess how this variation affects transport and use of water under drought stress. Specifically, we test the hypotheses that (1) simple perforation plates have a significant effect on water transport, (2) intraspecific variation exists for these features in maize, and (3) this variation affects water use strategies under drought stress.&nbsp;</p>

LBA-ECO ND-02 Saturated Soil Hydraulic Conductivity, Tapajos National Forest, Brazil

This data set reports field estimated saturated hydraulic conductivity measurements from June 12 through June 20, 2001. This study was part of a rainfall exclusion experiment that was conducted from 1999-2001 at the km 67 Seca Floresta site, Tapajos National Forest, Para, Brazil. The objective of this component of the study was to develop an understanding of the physical processes driving the observed soil water dynamics at the site. There is one comma-delimited ASCII data file with this data set.

Soil Hydraulic Conductivity Data (FIFE)

The Soil Hydraulic Conductivity Data Set contains soil hydraulic conductivity, matric flux potential, and soil depth data collected during the 1989 FIFE soil properties investigation. The purpose of the 1989 FIFE soil properties investigation was to obtain more points on the soil moisture release curves for the soils at the FIFE stations, and provide values for the saturated hydraulic conductivity for the long-term water balance studies. In-situ measurements of field-saturated hydraulic conductivity were made using the constant well head permeameter method. These measurements were made at five sites, each representing a different soil series. The constant well head method for hydraulic conductivity involves augering a hole to the desired depth and measuring the steady state flow rate of water into the hole while maintaining a constant head of water inside the hole. Six measurements were made at each of the two soil depths at each site. The hydraulic conductivity measurements were made at the same depths and close to (less than 1 m away from) the location where samples for moisture release measurements were taken.

Datasets for "Two improvements to Gardner's method of measuring the hydraulic conductivity of non-saturated media: accounting for impedance effects and non-constant imposed suction increment"

<p>In Tables S1 to S3 are presented transient outflow measurements for suction steps 1, 4 and 11, carried out on a coarse volcanic substrate using the apparatus described in the paper &quot; Two improvements to Gardner&rsquo;s method of measuring the hydraulic conductivity of non-saturated media: accounting for impedance effects and non-constant imposed suction increment&quot;. Data are presented in the form of the change in water level [mm] in the outer (suction step 1 &ndash; Table S1) and inner tube (suction steps 4 and 11 &ndash; Tables S2 and S3), captured by means of the differential pressure transducer of high precision (0.1 mm).</p> <p>In Tables S4 and S5 are presented transient outflow measurements for the remolded poorly graded sand and undisturbed silty clay, respectively, published by Wayllace and Lu (2011). In case of both soils, only the first suction step is analyzed. Data are presented in the form of the change in mass of the water drained, which is monitored by means of the weight scale.</p>
