Data set for anthropogenic contaminants in ice cores (Dome C - Antarctica)

<p>The produced dataset (in <em>MS Excel</em> format) contains depth profile concentrations of a 16.5 m deep shallow core (covering approx. 200 years before present) drilled at the plateau site of Dome C, East Antarctica (75&deg;06&#39; South Latitude, 123&deg;21&#39; East Longitude), during the 23<sup>rd</sup> Italian Antarctic Expedition.</p> <p>The concentrations of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (<em>PAH</em>) Benzo[k]fluoranthene (<em>BKF</em>) and of Organochlorinated Pesticides (<em>OCP</em>) expressed as three single compounds (<em>PeCB</em>, <em>ALD</em> and <em>44D</em>) and total (<em>&Sigma;<sub>51</sub> Pesticides</em>) are given in ng L<sup>-1</sup>.</p> <p>The ice core covers a time interval, which includes periods before and after the introduction of these Persistent Organic Pollutants (<em>POPs</em>) in commercial mixtures, as well as periods before the construction of research station facilities. However, in the top samples of the ice core, detected concentrations of analytes are ascribable to industrial anthropogenic activities.</p>

Ground-penetrating radar and shallow firn cores from Devon Ice Cap, Canadian Arctic

<p>GPR data and firn cores were collected over Devon Ice Cap, Canadian Arctic in May 2015.</p> <p>-----------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p><strong>Firn cores</strong></p> <p>Six ~11 m long firn cores were drilled using a Kovacs drill (9 cm diameter) along the GPR profiles. Pictures were taken of the firn cores, which were subsequently used to log the firn facies. From each core, three sections at different depths that did not include ice layers were weighted with a digital scale and used to calculate the firn density. At each firn core location, the snow depth was recorded, as well as at an additional location where a snow pit was dug (SPB1).</p> <p><em>DIC_firn_cores_2015_density.xlsx</em>: Firn core density measurements. Three measurements were taken from each core, using ice-free sections.&nbsp;</p> <p><em>DIC_firn_cores_2015_stratigraphy.xlsx</em>: Firn stratigraphy for each core location, derived from the firn core pictures. F stands for firn, I for ice layer, and P for percolation pipe/feature (ice in the firn core that does not present as an ice layer throughout the core diameter).</p> <p><em>DIC_snowdepth_2015.xlsx</em>:&nbsp;Snow depth measurements at each core location.</p> <p><em>Firn_core_pictures.zip</em>: Pictures of the firn cores taken with infrared and visible light cameras.</p> <p>-----------------------------------------------------------------</p> <p><strong>GPR data</strong></p> <p>GPR data were collected with a PulseEKKO Noggin radar (Sensors &amp; Software Inc.) with 500 MHz center frequency antennae (i.e., 0.6 m wavelength). The antennae were mounted on a plastic sled towed by snowmobile, generating a data set sampled every ~0.4 m along track. Positioning was obtained with a Leica Geosystems GPS system providing a 25 cm RMS accuracy.</p> <p>Processing of the GPR data was performed in Matlab and included dewow filtering, time-zero shift, background removal, Butterworth band-pass filtering and the application of a gain function.</p> <p><em>PulseEkko_RawData</em>: Folder containing the raw PulseEKKO GPR and GPS files.</p> <p><em>PulseEkko_ProcessedData</em>: Contains the processed GPR data as .mat files. 200-years ice core bromine reconstruction at Dome C (Antarctica): observational and modelling results

<p>Bromine enrichment (Br<sub>enr</sub>) has been proposed as an ice core proxy for past sea-ice reconstruction. Understanding the processes that influence bromine preservation in the ice is crucial to achieve a reliable interpretation of ice core signals and to potentially relate them to past sea ice variability. Here, we present a 210 years bromine record that sheds light on the main processes controlling bromine preservation in the snow and ice at Dome C, East Antarctic plateau. Using observations alongside a modelling approach, we demonstrate that the bromine signal is preserved at Dome C and it is not affected by the strong variations in ultraviolet radiation reaching the Antarctic plateau due to the stratospheric ozone hole. Based on this, we investigate whether the Dome C Br<sub>enr</sub> record can be used as an effective tracer of past Antarctic sea ice. Due to the limited time window covered by satellite measurements and the low sea-ice variability observed during the last 30 years in East Antarctica, we cannot fully validate Br<sub>enr </sub>as an effective proxy for past sea-ice reconstructions at Dome C.</p> <p>In this database, annual averaged data for Br, Na and Br<sub>enr</sub> for the shallow ice core are provided.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Dataset - "Ice core evidence for a 20th century increase in surface mass balance in coastal Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica"

<p>We provide in this dataset the isotopic and ionic records from a 120 m-long ice core drilled at the summit of Derwael ice rise (70&deg;14&#39;44.88&#39;&#39; S, 26&deg;20&#39;5.64&#39;&#39; E) situated in coastal Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica. Physico-chemical properties of the top 120 m of two ice cores in Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica)

<p>We provide in this dataset the complete records from the top 120 m of two&nbsp;ice cores drilled on two adjacent ice rises (Hammarryggen and Lokeryggen, ~100 km apart) located in coastal Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Density, water stable isotopes (&delta;<sup>18</sup>O, &delta;D and d-excess), ions concentrations (Na<sup>+</sup>, K<sup>+</sup>, Mg<sup>+</sup>, Ca<sup>+</sup>, MSA, Cl<sup>-</sup>, SO<sub>4</sub><sup>2-</sup> and NO<sub>3</sub><sup>-</sup>), and continuous electrical conductivity measurement (ECM) records, as well as age models and resulting surface mass balance (SMB) are presented here. These ice cores are dated back to the end of the eighteenth century (CE 1793 &plusmn; 3 years for FK17and 1780 &plusmn; 5 years for TIR18) by manual and automatic multivariable layer counting and volcanic tie points validation. The SMB is calculated after correction for vertical strain rates.</p> <p>A detailed description of the measurement procedures, data treatments and uncertainties can be found in: Wauthy S., Tison, J.-L., Inoue, M., El Amri, S., Sun, S., Claeys, P., and Pattyn, F.:&nbsp;Physico-chemical properties of the top 120 m of two ice cores in Dronning Maud Land (East Antarctica): an open window on spatial and temporal regional variability of environmental proxies, submitted to Earth System Science Data (ESSD).</p> <p>These new records can be compared to those from other coastal ice cores in DML and to regional or global model results, and represent a great opportunity for further studies addressing the mechanisms behind SMB spatial and temporal variability in East Antarctica.</p> <p>The study was funded in the framework of the Mass2Ant project, contract n&deg; BR/165/A2 by the Belgian Science Policy BELSPO.</p>

We include data for all 129 40Ar/39Ar dated hornblende grains, but note that only ages when an 5.0E-18 Mol 39Ar threshold was exceeded are considered reliable (n = 33) and that data from grains with less than 1.5E-17 Mol 39Ar should be interpreted with caution.&nbsp;The ice core the debris was extracted from was drilled at 80<i><strong>°</strong></i>&nbsp;0.1'S, 119<i><strong>°</strong></i> 31.0'W at Byrd Station, West Antarctica, in January 1968.</p>

Chemical and sediment characteristics of ice cores collected from the ablation zones of Canada, Commonwealth, Howard, Hughes, and Seuss Glaciers in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica from 2015 to 2019

This data package contains chemical and sediment characteristics of ice cores collected from the ablation zones of five glaciers in Taylor Valley, located in the McMurdo Dry Valleys region of Antarctica, during the 2015-16, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 austral summers. Specifically, shallow ice cores were collected from the ablation zones of Hughes, Howard, Seuss, Commonwealth, and Canada Glaciers in order to characterize the spatial and temporal evolution of ice chemistry and sediment concentration across Taylor Valley. Cores were collected in triplicate from each sampling location and measured 79 mm in diameter and up to 1 m in depth. Cores were sectioned in 5 cm (0-25 cm depth) and 25 cm increments (25 cm to the maximum depth of the core) prior to analyzing chemical and sediment characteristics.

Data to support: Anthropogenic influence on tropospheric reactive bromine since the pre-industrial: Implications for ice-core bromine trends

<p>Tropospheric reactive bromine (Br<sub>y</sub>) influences the oxidation capacity of the atmosphere by acting as a sink for ozone and nitrogen oxides. Aerosol acidity plays a crucial role in Br<sub>y</sub> abundances through acid-catalyzed debromination from sea-salt-aerosol, the largest global source. Bromine concentrations in a Russian Arctic ice-core, Akademii Nauk, show a 3.5-fold increase from pre-industrial (PI) to the 1970s (peak acidity, PA), and decreased by half to 1999 (present day, PD). Ice-core acidity mirrors this trend, showing robust correlation with bromine, especially after 1940 (<em>r</em>=0.9). Model simulations considering anthropogenic emission changes alone show that atmospheric acidity is the main driver of Br<sub>y</sub> changes, consistent with the observed relationship between acidity and bromine. The influence of atmospheric acidity and Br<sub>y</sub> should be considered in interpretation of ice-core bromine trends.</p>
