Face processing in the infant brain after pandemic lockdown

<p>The role of visual experience in the development of face processing has long been debated. We present a new angle on this question through a serendipitous study that cannot easily be repeated. Infants viewed short blocks of faces during fMRI in a repetition suppression task. The same identity was presented multiple times in half of the blocks (Repeat condition) and different identities were presented once each in the other half (Novel condition). In adults, the fusiform face area (FFA) tends to show greater neural activity for Novel vs. Repeat blocks in such designs, suggesting that it can distinguish same vs. different face identities. As part of an ongoing study, we collected data before the COVID-19 pandemic and after an initial local lockdown was lifted. The resulting sample of 12 infants (9–24 months) was divided equally into pre-and post-lockdown groups with matching ages and data quantity/quality. The groups had strikingly different FFA responses: pre-lockdown infants showed repetition suppression (Novel &gt; Repeat), whereas post-lockdown infants showed the opposite (Repeat &gt; Novel), often referred to as repetition enhancement. These findings provide speculative evidence that altered visual experience during the lockdown, or other correlated environmental changes, may have affected face processing in the infant brain.</p>

Vocal communication is tied to interpersonal arousal coupling in caregiver-infant dyads

<p>It has been argued that a necessary condition for the emergence of speech in humans is the ability to vocalize irrespectively of underlying affective states, but when and how this happens during development remains unclear. To examine this, we used wearable microphones and autonomic sensors to collect multimodal naturalistic datasets from 12-month-olds and their caregivers. We observed that, across the day, clusters of vocalisations occur during elevated infant and caregiver arousal. This relationship is stronger in infants than caregivers: caregivers' vocalizations show greater decoupling with their own states of arousal, and their vocal production is more influenced by the infant's arousal than their own. Different types of vocalisation elicit different patterns of change across the dyad. Cries occur following reduced infant arousal stability and lead to increased child-caregiver arousal coupling, and decreased infant arousal. Speech-like vocalisations also occur at elevated arousal, but lead to longer-lasting increases in arousal, and elicit more parental verbal responses. Our results suggest that:  12-month-old infants' vocalisations are strongly contingent on their arousal state (for both cries and speech-like vocalisations), whereas adults' vocalisations are more flexibly tied to their own arousal; that cries and speech-like vocalisations alter the intra-dyadic dynamics of arousal in different ways, which may be an important factor driving speech development; and that this selection mechanism which drives vocal development is anchored in our stress physiology.</p>

Digital twin of infant microbiome (qnet models)

<p>The complexity of the gut ecosystem, with thousands of&nbsp;cross-talking microbial colonizers, together with sparsely observed abundance profiles, has limited progress. We have developed a computational framework to learn an approximate &ldquo;digital twin&rdquo; of the maturing infant microbiome,&nbsp;that once learned, can reliably forecast detailed ecosystem trajectories unfolding over weeks from few initial&nbsp;observations. This generative model (Q-net), inferred at the level of taxonomic classes of microbes automatically&nbsp;from standard 16S rRNA profiles, is used to uncover actionable patterns driving developmental fate in early life. Here we publish the key qnet models to accompany our upcoming publication.</p>

Infants on the Move: Bibliometric Analyses of Observational versus Digital Means of Screening Infant Development

<p>Datasets, High Resolution Images and Video tutorials for Bibliometric use on neonatal General Movements Assessment</p> <p>Neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses have increased significantly over the years, though the average age of detection is 4.5 years old. This delay is partly due to reliance on social-communication criteria. These criteria require a level of maturation that takes much longer than scaffolding elements of neuromotor control. Early components of neurodevelopment include early evolution of reflexes, development of interactions between central pattern generators and cortical structures, maturation of intentional movements and their overall sensation. Such elements have been studied in General Movement Assessment (GMA) using observational means, but the last two decades have seen a surge in digital tools (biosensors, video-based pose estimation and algorithms) that permit non-invasive tracking of newborns&rsquo; movements. Despite their importance, these tools are not yet broadly used. In this work, using CiteSpace, VOSViewer and SciMAT software, we investigate the evolution of the literature on GMA and the methods in use today, to estimate how digital techniques are being adopted. To that end, we created maps of key word co-occurrence networks, co-author networks, document co-citation analysis and strategic diagrams of 295 publications based on a search in the Web of Science, Dimensions and SCOPUS databases for: &lsquo;general movement assessment&rsquo; OR &lsquo;general movements assessment&rsquo;. The nodes on the maps were categorized by size, cluster groups and year of publication. We found that the state-of-the-art methodology to diagnose neurodevelopmental disorders still relies heavily on observation. Several groups in classical GMA research have branched out to incorporate new techniques, but few groups have adopted digital means. We report on additional analyses of methods and biosensors usage and propose that combining traditional clinical observation criteria with digital means may allow earlier diagnoses and interventional therapies for infants.</p>
