Radar-based sensing of wind turbines blades based on 35 GHz FMCW sensors installed at operational wind turbine towers

<p>The dataset contains radar-based measurements of rotor blades from three operational wind turbines as part of a structural health monitoring system. For this purpose, a sensor box with a 35 GHz radar sensor (about 1 000 measurements per second) and a camera system (about 100 images per second), is mounted on each wind turbine tower at approximately 100 m height. In order to distinguish individual rotor blades, a machine-readable marker printed on a self-adhesive film was applied on the blade&rsquo;s surface. When a rotor blade passes the sensor, the camera captures an image of the marker while the radar records a measurement. The marker is then identified and the recorded data is assigned to a particular rotor blade. The measurements demonstrate that the damage detection methodology can be transferred to an image processing problem. The challenge is to manage the strong influence from variable environmental and operational conditions, e.g. wind speed, azimuth orientation, that modify the rotor blade appearance in the radargram significantly. The dataset contains measurements from the intact turbine blade conditions, because it was not possible to introduce structural damage.</p>

Extract from BluePrint sound installation "In at Midnight and Away by Morning: The Uninvited Guest"

<p>This audio piece is a 3 minute extract of the sound installation "In at Midnight and Away by Morning: The Uninvited Guest" (17 minutes in total) co-created by artist Sara Walmsley and the participants of the BluePrint project. This poetic reflection, which includes sonification of historic and predicted rainfall data*, draws on the lived experience of two communities who, in having to deal with the realities of flooding, are already learning to live with the impacts of climate change.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;Developed over 8 months (March to October 2024) of collaborative creative workshops and individual ethnographic interviews, this piece weaves together the voices and sounds that tell the stories of two devastating flood events that affected the people and places of Eglinton and Newtownstewart in 2017 and 2022. &nbsp;</p> <p>Within this extract of the sound installation you will hear the melodic, polyphonic harmonies of St. Eugene&rsquo;s Church choir as they give music to the words of members of their community whose homes were destroyed and lives endangered by flood water. A play, performed by the Visible, Invisible and Self, takes us on a narrative journey through a community which saw their joyful totems of leisure and togetherness tumbled and sodden by a beloved natural element turned wild. A poem, written and performed by those who witnessed the rolling in of a sudden and unexpected storm, represents the voices of the key actors in a devastating event - the flooding victims, the community responders, and the river itself. Finally, we hear throughout the voices of those striving to adapt to our changing climate, those who are responding to the urgency by finding solace, hope, strength and courage in the unending and unsurprising resilience and creativity of our communities.</p> <p>Listeners are invited to remember that as they sit and experience this sound piece, that this is not a piece of art born from an imagined, dystopian future. The events described and represented all happened to real people and real places. As our climate changes at a rapidly accelerating rate, the island of Ireland is particularly vulnerable to an increased frequency of devastating flood events. While this project and this piece of art have aimed to highlight and celebrate the shining threads of hope, inspiration and creativity our communities have shown in meeting the challenges posed by climate change, a note of alarm and urgency has also been sounded. Atmosphéries and the poetics of the in situ: the role and impact of sensors in data-to-sound transposition installations - Supplementary audio material

<p>This audio file wishes to give an insight into NXI Gestatio Design Lab&#39;s <em>Atmosph&eacute;ries</em> research program, and to accompany the publication &quot;Atmosph&eacute;ries and the poetics of the in situ: the role and impact of sensors in data-to-sound transposition installations&quot;. The file consists in a 7-minutes recording of the <em>Meridian Probe</em>, the last instrument designed within the <em>Atmosph&eacute;ries</em> program, which allows to generate sound from on-site atmospheric data. The recorded extract then acts as a sonic representation of the atmospheric conditions found at the place of exhibition, at the time of recording - in this case, gardens of the Bussy-Rabutin&#39;s Castle (France), respectively July 31st, 2021, 17h17. A crowdsourced dataset of aerial images with annotated solar photovoltaic arrays and installation metadata

<p><strong>Summary</strong></p> <p>Photovoltaic (PV) energy generation plays a crucial role in the energy transition. Small-scale, residential PV installations are deployed at an unprecedented pace, and their safe integration into the grid necessitates up-to-date, high-quality information. Overhead imagery is increasingly used to improve the knowledge of residential PV installations with machine learning models capable of automatically mapping these installations. However, these models cannot be reliably transferred from one region or imagery source to another without incurring a decrease in accuracy. To address this issue, known as distribution shift, and foster the development of PV array mapping pipelines, we propose a dataset containing aerial images, segmentation masks, and installation metadata. We provide installation metadata for more than 28000 installations. We provide ground truth segmentation masks for 13000 installations, including 7000 with annotations for two different image providers. Finally, we provide installation metadata that matches the annotation for more than 8000 installations. Dataset applications include end-to-end PV registry construction, robust PV installations mapping, and analysis of crowdsourced datasets.</p> <p>This dataset contains the complete records&nbsp;associated with the article &quot;A crowdsourced dataset of aerial images of solar panels, their segmentation masks, and characteristics&quot;, published in Scientific data. "I'm something of an untrained, unofficial cultural anthropologist myself. Ihave a business interviewing people to capture their personal histories. I'm always interested how people fit into their world and how they affect their world. I'm a graphic designer who works in the same building as the printing presses that I recorded. Iwalk past the presses every day on my way to talk to the folks in the prepress department. I'm on friendly but not drinking terms with the pressmen. I'm a friend with the prepress manager. Three Heidelberg presses are installed side by side in an open warehouse-like room. The presses are about twenty feet long and about five feet high. With their series of four humps or mounds where each printing cylinder is located, the presses remind one of giant, gray, mechanical caterpillars. Each press has a cyan cylinder, a magenta cylinder, a yellow cylinder and a black cylinder – so the humps are brightly colored. The presses are well lit by banks of fluorescent lights hanging from the ceiling over each press. When you walk into the press room you hear the sound of rock music blaring from a boom box radio mixed with the general din of the presses. It is only when you walk up to a press like Idid for the recordings that you really start to hear the individual strains of clicking, clacking and mechanical, syncopated chattering. When I made my recordings I was intrigued by the subtle variations in the sounds produced by these machines that aren't apparent when you first walk through the door. The pressmen were kind enough to allow me to walk right up to the presses and poke my microphone quite close to the rotating press cylinders. Iuse a Danish Pro Audio microphone about the size of a pencil eraser. An extremely sensitive mic with the capacity for capturing loud sounds such as the presses up close. Green stormwater infrastructure projects voluntarily installed in Baltimore City through 2019

Much of the green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) in Baltimore, Maryland, USA, has been installed voluntarily by nonprofits and community groups, yet no comprehensive record of these installations previously existed. We worked with nonprofit stakeholders and Baltimore’s Department of Public Works to compile such a record, using both information provided by these agencies and publicly available data sources such as annual reports and newspaper articles. This dataset includes all voluntary green stormwater infrastructure projects that we were able to identify by the end of 2019, with the first known installation completed in 2001. The dataset includes two data tables, one with project-level information, and one with the locations of individual GSI facilities included in each project.

<p>Instructions for ContinuousFlex software installation and Tutorial for running MSPACE and MDTOMO methods of ContinuousFlex,&nbsp;together with test datasets. The ContinuousFlex&nbsp;installation instructions also include the instructions for installing Scipion, Xmipp, ChimeraX, and VMD (required for using ContinuousFlex). This distribution was prepared for the practical session of AlgoSB 2023 thematic school (Novembre 20 - 24, 2023, Cargese, France) on hybrid methods MDSPACE and MDTOMO for obtaining continuous conformational landscapes from cryo electron microscopy and cryo electron tomography data. Instructions for the software installation are in Instructions-Installation-ContinuousFlex.txt. The tutorial for the practical session is in MDSPACE_Tutorial_v4.docx and MDSPACE_Tutorial_v4.pdf.</p>

Habitat quality and biological community responses to innovative hydropower plant installations at transverse in-stream structures

<ol> <li>Ecological assessments of the effects of hydropower plants (HPPs) are often limited to aspects of entrainment, mortality, injuries, and passage of fish, whereas the effects on riverine habitats and biological communities in proximity to these structures are hardly documented.</li> <li>In this study, aquatic communities comprising fish, macroinvertebrates, macrophytes, and periphyton as well as physical and hydromorphological parameters were investigated in upstream and downstream river sections at five transverse structures at different seasons before and after the installation of an innovative HPP.</li> <li>At all study sites, significant differences in the aquatic community composition between the assessed upstream and downstream sections were found after HPP construction, indicating distinct serial discontinuity.</li> <li>Raising the damming target at the sites Großweil and Au deteriorated the habitat conditions in the upstream area close to the weir and presumably influenced in particular the macroinvertebrate community, where a significant decrease in the density of rheophilic mayfly, stonefly, and caddisfly larvae was observed after HPP construction.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and applications</em>: The installation of different types of innovative HPPs has not improved the habitat conditions for rheophilic species, contrary to the promises raised by the developers of these concepts. Conversely, retrofitting existing weirs accompanied by further damming even significantly increased the effects of serial discontinuity and deteriorated the habitat conditions for rheophilic species in upstream sections. As evident from the findings of this study, habitat and biological community effects resulting from serial discontinuity should become better integrated into ecological assessments of HPP developments.</li> </ol>
