Spatiotemporal variation in internal phosphorus loading, sediment characteristics, water column chemistry, and thermal mixing in a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA (2019-2020)

The primary aim of the data product is to quantify seasonal and spatial variation in sediment phosphorus fluxes in a temperate reservoir and evaluate mechanisms responsible for instances of elevated sediment phosphorus release. We studied Green Valley Lake, a hypereutrophic reservoir in southwest Iowa, USA, from 2019 to 2020. We measured sediment phosphorus flux rates and potential explanatory variables at three sites along the longitudinal gradient of the reservoir over six sampling events during winter and summer stratification as well as mixing events in the spring, summer, and fall. Ex situ sediment core incubations were used to measure sediment P release rates under ambient temperature and dissolved oxygen conditions. Explanatory variables measured included sediment phosphorus chemistry, sediment physical characteristics, epilimnetic and hypolimnetic nutrient concentrations, and thermal stratification patterns. These data will be used to identify mechanisms driving hot spots and hot moments of sediment phosphorus release, which will contribute to our understanding of how areas of lakebed and times of the year can disproportionately influence whole-lake water chemistry.

Characterisation data of Nd- and Ce-doped uranium dioxide microspheres prepared via internal gelation

<p>The preparation of Nd- and Ce-doped UO2 microspheres was studied, applying the sol-gel method via internal gelation (IG). Un-doped, and <em>Ln</em>-doped ammonium diuranate (ADU) gels with <em>Ln</em> molar metal fractions up to 30 mol% and an increment of 5 mol% were prepared (<em>Ln</em> = Nd, Ce). The dried gels were characterised using optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), additionally thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC) measurements were carried out on un-doped microspheres and particles containing 10 mol% dopant. The ADU matrix of the dried particles is converted during a thermal treatment via U3O8 into a UO2 matrix, which was carried out by a calcination in air (900 &deg;C, 1 h) and a sintering in a mixture of Ar:H2 and Ar:O2, corresponding to an oxygen potential of about &minus;420 kJ mol&minus;1 , at 1600 &deg;C for 10 h. Calcined intermediates of the un-doped particle batch, and particles each doped with 10 mol% Nd and Ce, were analysed by XRD. Sintered products of all compositions were also characterised by XRD, and additionally via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The micropraphs, XRD patterns, TG-DSC results and all data associated with the particle fabrication and characterisation, are part of this dataset.</p>

Field measurements of aerosol particles near a runway at Narita International Airport, Japan

<p>Field measurements of aerosol particles were conducted at an observation point ~180 m from the centerline of runway A (~140 m from the edge of the runway) at Narita International Airport (NRT), Japan, in February 2018. The online aerosol instruments used for the field measurements consisted of an ultrafine condensation particle counter (UCPC; Model 3776, TSI, d50 = 2.5 nm), a condensation particle counter (CPC; Model 3771, TSI, d50 = 10 nm), a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS; Model 3080, TSI), and an engine exhaust particle sizer (EEPS; TSI). The other instruments included a carbon dioxide (CO2) monitor (Model LI-840, Li-Cor Biosciences) and meteorological sensors. The sampling inlet for the UCPC, CPC, and SMPS was switched between an unheated (room temperature) mode and a 350&deg;C heated mode every eight hours during selected time periods to measure the total and the non-volatile particles, respectively. The EEPS was operated independently from the UCPC/CPC/SMPS inlet system and it measured the unheated particle number size distributions during the entire period.</p>

A Dataset of Science-Policy Collaborations from the International Geneva Ecosystem

<p><strong>This dataset contains data on the characteristics of&nbsp;science-policy collaborations (SPCs) as well as on the perceived value of the Geneva Science-Policy Interface as an intermediary actor facilitating collaborative processes.&nbsp;</strong></p> <p>----</p> <p>In 2020, the Geneva Science-Policy Interface deployed&nbsp;a call for projects explicitly targeting SPCs. The purpose of the call for projects is to motivate policy actors and scientists to join their efforts and propose collaboration projects, select the most promising projects, and provide them with financial and strategic support. Projects are eligible only if both academia and policy actors are represented, and if policy actors are part of the International Geneva ecosystem.</p> <p>The call for projects is a structured and standardised process that allows for the collection of identical data across a sample of SPCs, thus enabling comparative analyses. Data is collected through crowdsourcing, coupling challenge-based data collection and survey data.&nbsp; The Geneva Science-Policy Interface&nbsp;uses the call for projects to collect data on characteristics of&nbsp;SPCs as well as on the perceived value of the GSPI as an intermediary actor facilitating collaborative processes.&nbsp;</p>
