Extensive literature search for grayanotoxins and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural - summary tables and EndNote libraries

<p>An extensive literature search to identify and collect studies related to the toxicity of grayanotoxins and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) was performed in the three databases PubMed, Web of Science and SciFinder&reg; for six and four Areas, respectively. After combination of the searches from the three databases and removal of the duplicates, the total number of references for the grayanotoxins was 652 and for 5-HMF Area 1b was 3,862, for Area 2b was 37, for Area 3b was 221 and for Area 4b was 500. The evaluation of all retrieved references for relevance by screening the title and abstract (if available) and applying eligibility criteria (inclusion/exclusion) resulted in a total number of relevant references for the grayanotoxins for Area 1a of 71, for Area 2a of 3, for Area 3a of 5, for Area 4a of 75, for Area 5a of 141, and for Area 6a of 78 and for 5-HMF for Area 1b of 55, for Area 2b of 14, for Area 3b of 15 and for Area 4b of 8.</p>

A comparison of citation sources for reference and citations based search in systematic literature reviews

<p>Context: In software engineering, snowball sampling has been used as a supplementary and primary search strategy. The current guidelines recommend the use of Google Scholar (GS) for snowball sampling. However, the use of GS presents several challenges when using it as a source for citations and references.</p> <p>Objective: To compare the effectiveness and usefulness of two leading citation databases (GS and Scopus) for use in snowball sampling search.Method: We relied on a published study that has used snowball sampling as a search strategy and GS as the citation source. We used its primary studies to compute precision and recall for Scopus.</p> <p>Results: In this particular case, Scopus was highly effective with 95% recall and had better precision of 5.1%compared to GS&rsquo;s 2.8%. On average, one would read 15 extra papers in GS than Scopus to identify an additional relevant paper. Moreover, Scopus supports batch downloading of both citations to a paper and the papers&rsquo; references, has better quality metadata, and does better source filtering.</p> <p>Conclusion: This study suggests that Scopus seems to be more effective and useful for snowball sampling than GS for systematic secondary studies attempting to identify peer-reviewed literature.</p>

List of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa from the upper Paraná River floodplain: summarizing information from a literature search

<p>We created a checklist of&nbsp;benthic macroinvertebrates taxa found in the environments of the upper Parana River floodplain according to the information found in published articles. The checklist data presents the taxa list, the substrate type, the environment type, and the year that each taxon was initially recorded for the region. We searched for data on aquatic macroinvertebrates recorded in the upper Paran&aacute; River floodplain by reviewing published articles and reports (grey literature). We took data from an extensive literature search at the ISI Web of Knowledge, SciELO, and Scopus websites, using the keyword combination &ldquo;upper Paran&aacute; River&rdquo; or &ldquo;Paran&aacute; River&rdquo; and &ldquo;floodplain&rdquo; or &ldquo;wetland&rdquo; and &ldquo;macroinvertebrate*&rdquo; for the search. We selected articles published between 1990 and 2020. We selected the articles following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) model (Liberati et al., 2009) and considered the selection in four steps: (1) the country of the study, (2) the title, (3) the abstract, and (4) the full text. The selection of papers followed some eligible parameters such as type of organisms, study area, and the presence of taxa data. During the selection, we excluded macroinvertebrates recorded as parasites or those found in studies of vertebrate feeding habits. Articles that contained these two criteria were excluded from the analyses. The articles that remained were analysed regarding the type of substrate where the macroinvertebrates were recorded (i.e., sediment, macrophytes, or artificial substrates), type of environment where each taxon was found (i.e., lentic or lotic environment), and the year in which each taxon was recorded for the first time in the upper Paran&aacute; River floodplain.</p>

Irreproducibility in searches of scientific literature: a comparative analysis

<p>1. Repeatability is the cornerstone of science and it is particularly important for systematic reviews. However, little is known on how researchers' choice of database and search platform influence the repeatability of systematic reviews. Here, we aim to unveil how the computer environment and the location where the search was initiated from influence hit results.</p> <p>2. We present a comparative analysis of time-synchronized searches at different institutional locations in the world, and evaluate the consistency of hits obtained within each of the search terms using different search platforms.</p> <p>3. We revealed a large variation among search platforms and showed that PubMed and Scopus returned consistent results to identical search strings from different locations. Google Scholar and Web of Science's Core Collection varied substantially both in the number of returned hits and in the list of individual articles depending on the search location and computing environment. Inconsistency in Web of Science results has most likely emerged from the different licensing packages at different institutions.</p> <p>4. To maintain scientific integrity and consistency, especially in systematic reviews, action is needed from both the scientific community and scientific search platforms to increase search consistency. Researchers are encouraged to report the search location and the databases used for systematic reviews, and database providers should make search algorithms transparent and revise access rules to titles behind paywalls. Additional options for increasing the repeatability and transparency of systematic reviews are storing both search metadata and hit results in open repositories and using Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to retrieve standardized, machine-readable search metadata.</p>

Extensive literature search on glycoalkaloids and quinolizidine alkaloids - results of the selection for relevance and study characterisation

<p>This report presents the outcome of extensive literature search on studies related to the chemistry and toxicity of glycoalkaloids and quinolizidine alkaloids in food and feed. The systematic literature search captures available scientific information published since 1950. 3,147 references were identified as potentially related to the chemistry and toxicity of glycoalkaloids in food and feed and 8,287 as potentially related to the chemistry and toxicity of quinolizidine alkaloids in food and feed. Upon screening of titles and abstracts of the candidates concerning glycoalkaloids, 1,645 were regarded as relevant, the number of included potentially relevant studies concerning quinolizidine alkaloids was 1,783. Removal of antibiotics by oxidoreductases_Literature data_systematic search_May 2023

<p>An overview on reported removal efficiencies of antibiotics achieved with oxidoreductases (laccases, peroxidases and peroxygenases) within the last 15 years. Important operational parameters as pH, temperature and concentrations of enzyme, pollutant and cofactors are listed.
